I was going to say AFL commentator but decided to leave it open.

in the AFL I enjoy the engagement of the 3AW team, they just seem to bring you to the game regardless of the score or who is playing. I especially like Rex Hunt but I am fairly sure that I am in a minority.

For Cricket I love the Skull and obviously the ABC team are 100% better than the Ch.9 guys or the foxtel guys for that matter.

for other sports well i'm a bit lost because they are really the only two sports I listen to on the radio or watch on TV regularly enough*.

*The Ch.7 Rugby commentary team is pretty good from my point of view. clear explanations of things. Also the ex-racer who is now a commentator (or was) for the V8 super cars.

anyway enough garble from me, who are other peoples favorites and why?

3AW used to win it hands down for me, but the loss of Clinton Grybas has led me to find other stations. Still love Rex, but with Commetti in the other seat just doesn't work for me. Listen to Triple M now, quite like Bryan Taylor's calls.
 
Nathan Buckley - Has an uncanny ability to predict things that normally end up happening. Very professional and informative.

The Ox - From a purely comedic point of view. Its fun to anticipate just what hilarious garbage is going to come out of his mouth next :D

Yeah Rex still goes OK but my perferred team of callers would have to be BT, James Brayshaw and Gary lyon.

Brian Taylor is going to have a field day with "piss ant town" this season.

Sorry Vader but if i have to listen to channel 7, i am glad it's Bruce, not Sandy Roberts or Drew Morphett.

Dennis is good and Buckley was excellent. Just let down by an old fool who has long since become a parody of himself and now has nothing to offer but stupid and inane comments.

Nathan Buckley was excellent last year so i will agree with you on that one BUT Dennis could almost be put into the same category as Bruce when your talking about becoming a parody of himself. Last year he was dreadfully woeful.

Rugby could be Gordon Bray i think but the ex racer is neil crompton and I agree compleatly..Neil is a crackup :D

Speaking of motorspor I miss Murrary Walker :( and I love the brittish guy who commentats the MotoGP on Fox (I forgot his name too)

I know hes a port man but I love Chris Dittmar - loved his effort in the Olympics

Im a big gee also for SBS's Commentary team in the TDF - Paul Shewin is great and I could listen to Pill Liggit all day!

best commentator in Australia by far is Simon Hill - whe we have away socceroo games he does the games by himself and he does it to perfection
 
Cricket; Gotta go Richie. Warney has been a breath of fresh air in the commentry box this summer and Gilly was a gun commentator when he was on field playing in the 20/20 games. Also don't mind some of the Foxtel boys Blewey goes alright and Fleming is pretty good. I like Mark Waugh as a commentator as long as New South Wales aren't playing.

Football; I've gone off Dennis a bit in the last few years...he's almost become a characiture of himself. Buckley is a great special comments man, I don't mind Josh Francou on 5AA and Rhett Biglands has been a big suprise on Triple M. For a laugh I enjoy Brayshaw, Lyon and BT on Triple M - they're a bit censored on Channel 9. But if my team is playin I prefer a bit more of a serious commentry team.

Can we say dead people? If so Clinton Grybas.

But if its living people ill have to say Bruce McAvaney. There is no stand out any more.

I can understand the commnts about Commeti. My thought is that he's being dragged down to the depths by the idiot with whom he's sharing the commentary box (McAvaney). Commeti likes to be "the man". When McAvaney starts dribbling rubbish like "he's on world record pace" then Commeti feels he has to join in - partly because he can't leave his co-commentator hanging in the breeze, partly because he feels that he should be the centre of attention. Put him back with some decent commentators and he'll return to true form.

On the positive side, I'd like to second the vote for the SBS cycling commentary team - Paul Sherwin and Phil Liggett are outstanding. They know their stuff and are very good at communicating their knowledge to the audience. I love watching the Tour de France, but I have to admit that many stages are 6 hours of tedium (albeit very scenic tedium) leading up to an exciting final 60 seconds as the sprinters race to the line. Somehow Sherwin & Liggett manage to make even that boring and completely predictable 6 hours seem interesting.

Murray Walker's F1 commentary was outstanding as well. Such a shame he chose to retire. We are all poorer for his departure. Even so, the ITV commentary leaves the Ch10 team for dead - such a shame that ITVs ad breaks are so much longer than Ch10s, leading to moments of inanity as the Australian crew try in vain to fill in the gaps.
