Some clubs in other sporting codes have a long, violent and sectarian history together. Glasgow's two teams Rangers (Protestant) and Celtic (Catholic) would likely only share a merry bloodbath together if you put them in the same stadium enclosure.

I read a great book a friend lent me about the great rivalries in (mostly) the UK - Newcastle/Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday/United, Man City/United, Arsenal/Spurs etc.

I think part of it is beyond control too - the shape of the ground. Football (soccer) is purely rectangular, so there are automatically set ends and sides. With an oval you don't get that.

Re Newcastle - i said to an English guy many years back - why do they call their supporters - " The Toon Army "

He said thats because how they speak

He gave the example - say they were going Down Town for a Brown Ale

A Newcastle person would say - we are going Doon Toon for a Broon Ale - hah

Newcastle Brown Ale up there they call it a "Newkie Broon'
