Gramophones needles were literally nails. different nails for different sound. it was the first equaliser. they then upgraded to the nails with squiggly tops to adjust the treble/ bass. and socks were literally put in the horn to muffle the sound. that's where the saying "put a sock in it" comes from. you literally put a sock to reduce the volume. and obviously you can adjust the volume with different types of socks too. chunky socks, pantyhose, trouser socks= different volumes.
