Federer's all about the slams, and has placed less and less importance on other tournaments as his career has progressed. Feb/Mar/Apr is pretty much a dead zone - a mishmash of hardcourt tournaments with a few claycourt ones thrown in, all over the world. It's an important break for him given the relatively quick succession of the final three slams.

If we get closer to RG and he's going out early of warmup tournaments, I'll give a bit more credence to the claims. But I suspect we'll see him kick it up a gear over the next month.

Yeah fair enough, It doesn't mean much in these smaller tournaments. He just plays these tournaments because he has to for sponsors and ticket sales but really couldn't give a shit ha. His brain switches on for the slams and yeah he will kick it up next mth.

Yeah, agree with everyone else that he just doesn't care all that much about the smaller tournaments. However - I can't see him winning RG this year!

No ones going to stop him winning RG besides a fully fit Nadal.

He needs to be at 100% or he'll lose again.
Nadal will romp it in, has a bit to prove to the critics who think he is a spent force. Federer imo wont get close if they meet in the final, personally think he has achieved what he set out to achieve with the french and would be happy just to be in another final. and to keep his record semi finals appearances streak going for another slam.

Fed would be contented with his achievements and his family life. Any future Grand Slam win would be an absolute bonus, and very difficult given the competition, and his probable decreasing appetite. He's the GOAT right now.

I can't see him winning the French Open. And Andy Roddick will be out to win Wimbledon so right now I can only see him winning the US Open. However, I do think he's just waiting for the Grand Slams, that's all that is left for him to do now, win Slams'.

Just like the Williams bros, and Sampras used to do.

Unconvincing win over Phau last night. Yet to find his range, especially his money shot. Expect him to take Estoril title but not Madrid or FO. Love to be proven wrong though.

Estoril was even worse for Fed. Knocked out in the SF by Montanes after two very unconvincing wins against Phau and Clement.

48 unforced errors in 2 sets last night
yeah he clearly isnt interested, more interested in match practice than trying to win the tournament judging by the way he was playing. Should have won this tournament with his eyes closed if he was fair dinkum.

If there was anything left, he'd want to win this year's French, Wimbledon and US Open to complete the Grand Slam. What an achievement that would be, I hope he gets it before he retires.

Yeah absolutely. The rest of the tournaments mean little to him now.

Journos need to learn that Federer's not in a slump until he loses at an early stage at a Grand Slam. (Although I am expecting this to happen any Slam now ...) Firstly, it just seems Federer can't kick into that extra gear during non-Slam events. Secondly, don't underestimate the mental toughness of Federer and how he always seems to find the strength to make a comeback during a best of five set.

I'm not remotely surprised by his relatively poor form since Melbourne. He rightly gave himself a time to recover from a minor enough health setback and has been slam hunting for years now anyway. Fed is never going to come flatly out and say he is indifferent to the masters events for a variety of contractual business and personal reasons but it is obvious from his body language he cares less.

He is gearing up now aht he slam season is approaching, in in the final at Madrid and may well win it.

Give him a break, Fed owns more titles than anybody else has in tennis and he still has a few more years of playing. He owns a lot of tennis records aswell and still has more Grand Slams to win.

I agree with you, he stills has a few years of playing tennis ahead of him and he will hopefully win all four grand slams in one year

I agree with most people, that Federer does not take the small tournaments as seriously as he does the grand slams

Wtf who does? The slams are where the money is, where the ranking points are, and where you can write yourself in the record books.

He has played in 23 consecutive grand slam finals. Say that slowly. He is not in a slump. One of the greatest stats in the history of tennis imo.
