I think he has slowed down a tiny bit this year. But then again he has had some really good games this year as well. If he keeps up the level of effort (surely he will). Then i have no problem with him playing till he's 40! :thumbsu:

I still remember a certain match saving tackle against 1 of carlton's & the leagues fastest small forwards! Or did he have some assistance with "Go Go Gadget Arm"??:D

From a form perspective or from a pace perspective ?

The problem is not that he is struggling but more so he is playing too well and is a key member of our defence. Right now the defence has no idea about how to play without Fletcher and will struggle to do so unless he retires. It is important our premiership defensive unit start gelling instead of overrelying on Fletcher which they currently do.

For example Fletcher played last man for a significant proportion of the Richmond match and takes 90% of kick ins. Whilst my personal preference is for him to retire, if he is to continue he has to stop taking all kick ins (or a minimal amount) to allow others to gain experience, stop playing as the last man and only play a maximum of 14 games next season to allow other defenders to work together.

I still am hoping Hird and Fletcher take a long-term view and make the call that he would be better served as a defensive assistant coach unless we will win the 2012 premiership.

350 games this year if we play a final would be a great way to finish on a high. I still love watching him play and he is my second favourite player behind Lloyd but I think this year is the right time.

As long as Fletch is in the best 22 (and he is currently) there is no reason for him to step aside.

The great man has earned the right to make the decision on his own terms, and he is such an Essendon man that he wouldn't never play if he was not performing and was robbing youth of their opportunity.

Fletch will play on, and will pass the baton to Hooker, Hurls and Pears when it's time.

spot on! I can't believe anyone would think that he should step aside in the interests of the club; he's an inspiration to the younger defenders, he's still lightning quick (see the video on the previous page of that ENORMOUS tackle), if his talents were waning I'd understand... but they're not! he's a freak!!

and it was a West Coast supporter who started this thread! what does that tell you about the great man.......

Has slowed down a touch - And is going to ground too easily when chasing loose balls - Bit strange considering his pace and agility are still fine.

Is still the consunmate professional at doing the subtle 1% per centers such as; blocking the forwards run, getting a hand across the forward's body, spoils that go ten rows into the stand, angling the contested ball towards the boundary line etc.

Think he is currently best suited to matching up against the second ruckman.

Fletcher and Hird will make the right decision.
