It's personal preference and it goes far beyond what he did as a player. Firstly I don't think I've seen a skinny running player dominate a finals series like he did. He dragged a young team through a finals series to a premiership. Then his knees struck. He would have been an all time great of the game.

Then there is what he did for the world through our club.

Its always easy to just say the players from bygone eras are the best we have ever had..history always treats players better than the players we have actually seen first hand. We see the goods and bads of todays players but history raraly tells us about reynolds or colemans bad games.

in saying this i'm not knocking triple brownlow medalists or full forwards that changed the game i'm saying don't be to hasty to disreguard players from our era. Madden revolutionised the way ruckmen jumped at the ball - hird, can anyone doubt his class and big match temprament? Lloyd kicked near on 1000 goals.

People will always try to compare players from different eras like they will try and comapre black caviar to vein or bradman to tendulkar. is it like comparing apples to oranges?

i think in 100 years time we may have hird, madden and fletcher comparing favorably with coleman and reynolds. We just can't say it now because its not been long enough for the stories about them to grow legs.

Hmm, all those words and you never mentioned Tim or Jobe Watson, Billy Hutchinson, Vanderhaar...Fletch is an absolute legend no doubt , his longevity is totally amazing to watch long live gadget, but in regards to the OP and greatest player, he's around about 10th in line for greatest player...
