Footy on Pay TV Thread again

As this current TV contract closes at the end of the year, and next season see us with with the Ch7 and 10 FTA, Fox pay TV is not yet over the line in getting into bed with the new partners.

It has been mentioned that the AFL has spoken to a local racing channel
TVN and even the huge US network ESPN has been mentioned as a possible network.

I want to know if those who have pay tv would switch operators because they only watch footy and nothing else, or would they stay with Fox because of contractual or other programmes they enjoy, and would have to pay extra to watch their sides.

Initially I subscribed to pay tv in 1998 for the sole purpose of watching Rugby League, but nowdays all i really watch is Fox Footy and not much else. I would definately cancel my subscription.

I got Fox for the footy... the other programs were also a consideration. The rest of the family certainly enjoy the different options that FTA doesnt provide.

More than likely I would get the new station to watch the footy and assess the Foxtel on an ongoing basis

it would be unusual if someone needed to switch providers if the footy went to another of the cable channels.

what normally happens is that you pay a fee to the new provider, and the footy channel would be piped to you via the old provider. For example I pay for "NASN" which is a european version of ESPN and I get it via SKY.

I would imagine though if the new channel wanted to be a full service provider then they may not make it available to subscribers of Fox (is that legal) and plenty would switch over to the new one.

As I understand it, 7 and 10 will have to come to some agreement with Foxtel as TVN has no coverage in NSW and QLD ( it is basically a racing channel) and ESPN not thought to be interested. ESPN is actually on Foxtel.

Channel 7 putting out disinformation to get Foxtel to agree to anything because if 7 and 10 cannot get them on board the footy rights could revert to 9 who have an actual plan to show footy live in NSW and QLD on Friday nights albeit on Foxtel.

7 and 10 will not show Friday night footy live as they would get slaughtered in the ratings by 9 showing Rugby League. Whether we like it or not, League is the main winter sport in those states not Aussie Rules.

So Foxtel may have some clout when dealing with 7 and 10
