Whatever the merits of the side narratives this report throws up, the basic thrust of the story (i.e. why is the AFL the only major professional sporting org worldwide that’s had zero players, past or present, feel comfortable enough to come out?) is something that needs to be reflected on deeply. ...Although from convos I've had with a few people since, there is a weird reflex to be be defensive about it all. Not sure I understand that to be honest.
Personally I feel that while the AFLW has a long way to go to hit its strides on the park, the impact of having openly gay players in around footy clubs will inevitably be a catalyst for change; and a long overdue one at that.
