Four in running for captaincy

Reading between the lines of Connolly.

Brad Green
Brent Moloney
Aaron Davey
Jack Grimes (outsider)

I've been on the Beamer bandwagon for a while now, but I honestly think I would be happy with any of those three. For Green it would be deserved after a great year whilst Aaron's tutelage around the club seems second-to-none and probably strikes a nice median between (what I consider to be) Beamer's do-as-I-say and Greeny's do-as-I-play.

The fact that Grimes is even being mentioned having played just 26 games is remarkable in itself. Won't get near it though. Leadership group certainly.

Of those, I think Green is the ideal candidate.

He is articulate, brave on the field, knows all about what it means to play for the club and leads through example.

Also quite keen on Aaron for captain, but I think Grimes might still be a little too young. I think Moloney is also a reasonable option, given his intensity and passion, but I don't think he would be too good in the media based on the interviews I've seen him do in the past, and nobody can deny that speaking in front of others is a large part of leading a football club.

To me, Sylvia would be the ideal man for the job, but I understand why he isn't being seriously considered at the moment.

well Sylvia may be being considered for a leadership position, you can hardly trust a HUN article to provide any groundbreaking details of a clubs inner workings, or most articles for that matter... someone like Rivers Bails has stated he has great respect for as a leader (on one of the Whiteboard Wednesdays when talking about the backline) and has been part of the leadership group for a long time

leadership group of;

Green
Davey
Moloney
Sylvia
Grimes
Rivers and,
Jamar

would look pretty good IMO, i literally have no idea who i think the captain will be, but i have a suspiscion we may be suprised by the appointment

not only does brad green model an MFC leader but a true AFL player
always 110% at every contest
the true example of this is against hawthorn round 1 2010
down by about 60 pts second quarter, back with the flight nearly breaking his neck

from that list I want GRIMES *make it so make it so make it so* screw it lets skip formalities, lets one up carlton, I WANT VINEY AS CAPTAIN!!!

Moloney should not be captain, he will struggle to keep his spot in the side within the next 2 years. It would be an utter embarrassment to see the club captain pushed out of the best 22.

Put Green as captain until the MFC force his retirement due to being over 30 and give it to a young player. I like Grimes, but you can't have him be captain after only 26 games. I'd like to see him get well past his injury issues before he is named captain.

Green will be the exception with respect to being tapped on the shoulder. He is different being our best forward and arguably our best player. Especially considering Bruce walked. Make him captain, honestly think he has daylight on the rest and it should be a formality.

One thing to consider with Moloney is his initiatives with leading the younger players in the annual boxing camp - something which I think is a fantastic idea.

However, in terms of overall package, I find it hard to overlook Green. He commands respect but has an undying passion for his club and for footy in general. My favourite thing in the world is watching Brad Green kick for goal - because I know if he gets it a big fist pump and smile is sure to follow.

I don't know where I'm going with that. Green for Prez.

Not sure if serious....
Moloney will be in the side easily in 2 years...

Captains are not necessarily the best players if they are problems arise, see carlton with judd, judd is the best player but if he is the best player their are questions. I dont think the best player should ever be captain for the reason that the captain should be able to keep the best player in tow, the best player should worry about the sport.

See Ponting he was our best batsmen then he became captain.

I see our best player to be Sylvia anyway
Captain: Moloney
Vice: Davey
Future/Vice: Grimes

I'd like Moloney but a couple of years for Green, followed by Grimes, seems like the obvious choice.

I wouldn't be opposed to Grimes getting it now though.

I think I'd like to see Jack put a full year together before he is given the captaincy, no matter how perfect he may be for the job in the long-run.

I would like Aaron... great head on his shoulders. Would get the boys doing what is necessary. Leads by example as well. Moloney would have been my choice, but the draftee's have to respect you and not be intimidated by you.

Grimes has only played 26 games, it would be ridiculous to make him captain now.

As I've said before, Green is the ideal candidate from my point of view, but I think Davey is a good option as well. The only thing that worries me is his lack of on-field discipline. He's well known for hitting opponents after they wind him up, giving away 50s for talking back to the umpires etc.

That aside, though, he would be a great choice for the job.

My vote is for Davey or Green, I'm hoping Beamer doesn't get the job :(

Our leadership group should be:
Davey
Green
Beamer
Rivers
Sylvia
Frawley
Grimes
(maybe Jones as well)

I'm not trolling, Moloney is a very limited player. Once the younger players are demanding their spot in the 22, Moloney will be fighting for scaps with Jones and McKenzie.

Best tackling player in the team in his 2nd year, averaging 18 touches.... probably not going to be "fighting for scraps" any time soon. I agree that one of Jones and Moloney will probably be forced out if all the young guys come on like we hope. But thats a pretty big if.

Not a fan of Davey as captain, off-field leadership may be good but his on-field "leadership" is shit.

Constantly cracks the shits if things aren't going his way and just refuses to suck it up and get on with things.

Green or Moloney, don't care which.

Yea, glad its not just me who thinks this. Davey would be shite.

I cant imagine him giving any inspirational speeches before a big game either, seems like a "ok guys lets go out there and get them" type of guy.

Green or Moloney please.

Green, and why is this being discussed?

Love Moloney and Davey as players, and definitely see Grimes as a long-term option but as captains, surely it must be Green.

Place the prefix 'Thank god for..." in front of each of those players and think back to how many times you have said it for each.

Brent Moloney: 1
Jack Grimes: 3
Aaron Davey: 10
Brad Green: 1,789,543
