Did anyone listen to SEN , yestrday afternoon . Huddo and Derm were talking to Rick Nixon about Riewoldt's new contract . They eventualy started to talk about a recomendation that Nixon put forward at the last EBA. That was that every club be allowed one Franchise player that was outside the Cap. He said that this would be fairer on a top player playing in top side because currently a top player in a bottom side can get rewarded far more because of Salary Cap.

It made me think who would we have as our Frachise player?
King , Ling , Scarlett , Ablett , Bartel. It would be hard pick.

And if a system like this was in, it would almost ensure most clubs have player in the best 30 in the league. eg Riewoldt at StKilda would leave Ball, Kozinski, Goddard and numerous others for clubs to have a ping at.

If it is outside the cap, the franchise player is going to be whoever is paid the most. I would expect that would be King.

Scarlett is undoubtedly the best player and if making them a franchise player makes it impossible for another club to poach him, you would select him.

Ablett X 2, Kelly, Bartel, Tenace possible "franchise players" in the future.

You're right, market forces would just about dictate that every club should be able to secure such a franchise player. The exception may be where a down and out club who is also struggling off the field can't manage to entice a player due to financial and lack of onfield success.

In Geelong's case, I don't think there would be a case for paying any of the players you mentioned over and above what they are already being paid. If they brought this rule in, say for the end of this season, Geelong would have a crack at an out of contract player but if they failed, they'd just go on paying "fair and reasonable" salaries.

There was a story on Benny on Channel 7 news last week or the week before. Footage of him practising his kicking. They compared it to footage of an NFL punter(think it was Bennett) and Ben was kicking further and getting more hang time. So it sounds promising.

As for the franchise player, there is talk in the NRL of allowing each club to have two players to be paid by sponsors, which would not be under the salary cap. I guess this is the same principle.
