- We don't have enough gamebreakers. McLeod. Goodwin. Johncock. Who else? Players whose individual feats can bring victory.
- We have an over-concentration of plodders - solid players, good footballers in their own right, but not damaging game-breakers. Edwards. Thompson. Reilly. Doughty. Mattner. Knights. Van Berlo. All can get 25 disposals in a game, be in the best players, yet not be truly damaging. Their disposals aren't influential enough.
- Welsh is the only forward capable of kicking a match-winning bag, five or six. And we all know how well he's travelling at the moment. Can't see Bock, Perrie, McGregor kicking six and winning us a game, they're three-goal tops players, not gamebreakers.
- Small forwards non-existant. Plonk Douglas there, let him grow. Him, Porps and Griffin give me hope.
- We miss Johncock more than Ricciuto. Both, please hurry back.
- Our defence is masterly. Every game, I thank the footy god for Bassett and Rutten. I used to go to Showdowns worried what Tredrea could do to us. Now I go to watch what Rutten will do to him. Sweet.
- Stop feeding Mr Rucci with your reactions.

Am I the only one (besides probably fightingdreamer) who thinks that Knights is deceptively quick? A few times on the weekend he looked like he was going to get caught but found a burst of speed to run into space and dispose of the ball.

I disagree on Douglas being plonked in the forwardline and letting him 'grow there'. Fine as a stop-gap measure, but he isn't a forward and can get himself a little lost down there.

Much better suited to defence at this stage, gradually will be pushed into the midfield.

Good Rant.....:thumbsu:

Agree with all of that except that Thommo is having a career best year so far - and Knights and The van Berlo will develop into game breakers IMO.....

...now go and give yourself a good talking to for not posting more often......;)

couldnt agree more. Would love to see him in the middle alot more.

With our defence coping without it, should he return to the forward line??

Interesting question there. Our defence has coped well without him, and its up forward where we are struggling but I think we need Johncocks run out the back.

Still, can do no harm trying him in the forward line I suppose

I love his attack on the ball, no fear. Probably isn't up to spending a whole lot of time on the ball at this stage, but hopefully can gradually spend more time in there as the year goes on.

Definitely a future 1st choice midfielder for us. His game against the West Coast midfield in the Pre-Season proved that he is capable.

One year he actually led our goalkicking. An indictment on our KPP at the time, but doesn't take away from his effectiveness up there.

I think we're providing enough run from the back half but where we are suffering is up the other end. When the ball hits the ground, Stevens, Bock and Perrie are useless. With Bode not there, we are incapable of winning a ground level ball and opposition teams can just waltz away, as forward pressure is non-existent

Yeah, with our defence coping well enough back there, there is no reason to not try Johncock up forward, especially with the kind of form McLeod is in from the back anyway.

Our main problem is the lack of crumbing forwards, Bode is clearly our best, but like many others is out injured at the moment.

Johncocks run from the back is more than useful, but, like you said not a lot of point in getting the ball into the forward 50 if its just going to come straight back out again

Marty Mattner is a gamebreaker when played in his correct position. Fantastic wingman, created drive that can't be replicated in our side.

So where does he end up? Plodding around as a 3rd tall defender

Agree. It appeared saturday night alot of ball was getting over the back of contests in the F 50.

Picked off time and time again by loose Collingwood players.

Your taught to be front and center of packs but everynow and then you get sat night and it goes behind/over the contest alot. good crumbers work this out.

No one did.

No one can. Thats the issue here. Bode is our only true front and centre small forward. When he doesn't play we're useless at ground level.

He is playing as a 3rd tall because, truth be told, there is no one else than can do that because everyone else is out injured.

I am suspecting that Kenny comes into the side and hence release Mattner to play as a running HBF rather than a 3rd tall defender.

Surely Nathan Bock or Scott Stevens could go back and do it.

This big slow forward line worked well when it could bully the small Bulldogs defenders out of the way, but other than that game, it hasn't really clicked.

Big slow forward line is what we have played pretty much ever since Craig took over.

We need to spread the load so 3 talls, a couple of mediums and a small is pretty much what our structure has been since 2005. Take one of those talls away and you get molested because no one is good enough to take a catch on consistent basis and smalls we do have aren't exactly crumbers.

This is the reason why McGregor will get back at the expense of a small and either line up in the forward line or at CHB.

Agreed :thumbsu: you have to make do with what you have got in the short term and can recruit in the medium term. I seem to recall a bunch of easy-beats becoming a top-2-at-end-of-season side for 2 years in a row... something went very right... pity we're restricted in the player types/flexibility at the moment. Poor Marty's having to do a team thing, like some others.

Have a practice bouncing at training, too, Marty, but for Chr*st sake don't give up. Your'e tough, the going is tough, so get going !

No you're not. Charlie Walsh said a few weeks back that Knights didn't know how good he could be - referring to explosive power in particular. Ironically, or maybe because of, he's improved out of sight from that day on. He's now taking players on and out-running them. :thumbsu:

PS. Knights will eventually end up as good as Goodwin IMO

As a CHB Kenny has towelled Brown on a couple of occasions in the past.

Given that he has only just reumed, I think he may be plonked in front of goals to give us a player who can take contested marks in this area - or at least compete for them (unlike Welsh last week).

This was my call a while ago. I've always thought their movement was very similar. I'm not really old enough to remember when Goody burst onto the scene. Did he have this explosive pace that Knights has?
