Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the type of player we will target for Free Agency and also when we will use our compo pick.

I think free agency starts in the 2012 season. Hopefully we are very close to finals next year and then can pick up a ready made gun to get us over the edge. Obviously the next 24 months are going to indicate what kind of player we need, however at this stage I would say the one thing I would like to see us going after is another Mitch Morton type. A goal kicking medium forward who can rotate into the middle.

A gun FB/CHB. Sure we have alot of tall defenders at the moment but not a whole lot of real quality. I rate McGuane, Rance and Moore. The latter two aren't able to play on the big boys though. (Rance almost, little more time)

Will have to see what becomes of Griffo, Post, Vickery ect. to see if we need another Tall forward. Great signs from Vickery so far, Griff hasn't had alot of chance to shine and Jayden is a little behind the 8 Ball.

Everyone always says we need a gun small defender. How many gun small defenders in the league is there? Small forwards either have a blinder or a shocker. Better off getting a better midfielder so that relegates Jackson or White to playing small defender roles which they would be able to do just fine its just that we need them in the middle at the moment.

As for the compo pick, its a nice thing to have stashed away isn't it? I'm not sure what type to select. Dangerous small forward maybe? Although alot of small forwards are dangerous at U18 level but have nothing at AFL level. Might just be a case of 'best available'

A Back. You see what happens now when we lose Moore, McGuane and Rance. And Astbury, I don't know why is down back when he gets beaten 8/10 times in one on one situations. Be good to have a young Scarlett type.

Look I agree that it'd be great to get a gun CHB/FB but talks of getting a gun young one is a little far- they need 8 years at their club to even be allowed to go, and then they are restricted so their clubs are allowed to match the offer. What club wouldnt match the offer for a 26 year old KP Defender like we're talking about??

Meanwhile, to be unrestricted they need 10 years at their club, so would be 28- I'd rather we draft someone.

Besides, the rule is a little unclear. It suggests that if you are coming into free agency for the first time, you're a restricted free agent regardless of years. So for example if you've had 7 years of service, sign a 3 year contract and then after the 10th year of service decide to test the market, you're still a restricted free agent.
This means that unless the AFL have decided to change this ridiculous stipulation, to get someone right on 28 they'd have to fit a perfect storm of coming out of contract fter 8 years, wanting to stay at the club and signing a two year deal, and then coming out of contract at 10
And they'd have to be a gun CHB/FB, and want to leave their club, and come to Richmond?
Good luck guys!

Crazy idea, but that's 2 full years of development before we need to decide.

I know it's fun to speculate, but let's see how it goes first.

Currently though, I'm more worried about our key forward stocks.

All indications are that Post has been bad so far this year, Griff is injured (again/still) and while Vickery has shown good signs so far, he still has a long way to go.

We shouldn't be getting ready made players.

If we do guaranteed we will not win the premiership. I will become a bookmker and take your money with ease not that I really want to.

The only players we could consider is a Scully or someone of that age or younger.

Seriously, I would be looking at some of GC excess ruck and forward stocks and other other players around other clubs around Martins age or similar.

Only when we really move to top 6(established eg 2 years running so at least 6 with the harder draw from the pevious years success) would I possibly consider a Buddy/Goodes/Goddard or whoever in their 30's for a pinch hit.

Free agency is more for more established lists than developing lists like us IMO.

The reason GC took a potshot at Richmond regarding first game is I think they knows Richmond will be the main southern rivals for GC and GWS in years to come over the next 15 years.

GC and GWS will no doubt be looking at the free agency option. This will be required more if they get slaughtered continually regarding the PR fallout. Therefore it is important all clubs make sure they whip GC and GWS list badly with heavy losses to reduce there reliance on a youth base which could be invinceable in years down the track

The other thing is these picks in my mind would we better used in 2013 or 2014. The reason is a lot of clubs will be using their picks in 2012, we do not have to, and the others will be desperate to capitalise on this window before the GC and GWS arrival. If anything we should be accumulatng picks n 2012 to use in 2014 and 2015 when we get up the ladder and our normal picks won't be good enough like St Kilda. Don't worry it appears we are the club more likely to be taking on GC and GWS than anybody else IMO!

Im happy if we dont use our compo pick in a compromised draft. I think we need to draft a small forward that can actually kick goals. Someone like betts or garlett from carlton, pray for a stevie J type!

At the moment guys like nahas, nason, etc dont look to be 100 gamers... just not dangerous enough

For me all are risks. Leunberger simply has to many question marks so are you getting any value at all given the hype, Shuey I dropped from my DT last week as appeared not aggressive enough at the contest and appeared a bit of a plodder, receiver, Dangerfield is more likely but there i something about him that concerns me , he seems to lack a little composure, a little rushed, I don't know, smoothness as if he is slightly off balance in his action but I did like his recent game so maybe he is just filling out regarding his muscles maturing.

Some of GC stocks really where eye catching. Even that Rory Thompson looked a smooth mover and Toy is a natural but off our radar probably.

Their GC Ruck stocks are outrageous so someone has to go at some stage. On top of that they appear to have Forward stocks out of their ears.

West Coast with Ruck stocks won't be interested either.

You would think GC will pick a mid or backman or small forward in this years draft

For mine Betts and Garlett aren't good enough, win you games but not premierships in finals.

Carlton aren't the team some make them out to be , they have an engine but little else.

We will win a premiership before Carlton comfortablely in the next 10 years. Judd is dreaming if he thinks he will take Carlton to a premiership but they might beat Collingwood on the weekend!

4 Gibbs'.
5 Deledio's.
1 J.Riewoldt, Coleman Medallist version.
1 Ablett, the Geelong version.
1 Sandilands.
1 Naitanui.
3 Lake's.
1 Cotchin.
1 Scully.
1 Richo.
2 Martin's.
1 Hart.
That's probably the team of the Century.

If someone said to me I had to pick a player to fit into the Richmond effort to win a premiership via free agency at the moment I would pick Cyril after his 10 years at Hawthorn.

Hawthorn would be declining, they would need picks to rebuild and we would be on the verge of attacking the flag!!

I think the idea is to have a main group of players coming through in the same age group. Roughly born in the years '87- '92 (this years draftees to Deledio) The trades that we have done and the older players we've drafted with the exception of Miller have all be in this age bracket. (Grigg '88, Houli' 88, Farmer '89, Webberley '88, Nason '89, Derrickx '87) If we trade use a compo pick it will be for a player in this age bracket. So I don't see us loading up on free-agency just yet, unless an absolute superstar becomes available.

Though looking at the ages of our list I'm surprised at how young some of our 'senior' players are and how old some of our 'youngsters' are.

Let's hope so:thumbsu:

A RUCK. We are building a gun midfield which has to win the ball back from the opposition as we don't have a decent ruck to give them first use.

Lets not kid ourselves none of Graham, Browne or Vickery are likely to be a half decent first ruck in the next two or three years (if ever).Just imagine for a moment how much better our midfield could be with a Cox, Jamar, Jolly or Sandi type feeding Cotch, Martin, Foley, Lids, Conca, Grigg etc the pill.

Yeah i'd say a ruck also. Hopefully there is a big bodied defender (Hurley) (Watson) type left by our pick so we have a FB for the future years. Then i'd say not this pre-season but next trade our 2nd/3rd round pick for a good up and coming ruck like Sydney did with Mumford.

If were looking to go tall via draft, from what ive seen this will be the year to do.

Todd Elton and Jon Patton look the goods at this stage.

has to be a key defender, and in particular a full back.

of course we need a ruck, a medium foward and a small defender but full back is the biggest concern for me/

What type of player's are they? Dont forget the way we are going we probably wont have our first pick till about pick 12-16 roughly.

Elton is a ruck/CHF.

This is what rayman said on the Dandenong stingrays thread:
Spoke to a friend who went to the game. DS lost by 1 point - 25 scoring shots to Gippy 16 shots. Elton took 10 marks inside fifty and kicked 1 goal 7 points for the rays.

Patton is a FF. Also kicked 5 goals in a quarter last week.

Both likely to go to GWS.

I don't think we target anyone in particular. First and foremost, we must continue pouring our resources into the draft. Once we move down the draft order, we need to be even more on the ball with who we pick.

Once free agency comes in, when a "gun" player decides to move clubs, we just have to make sure we're equipped to be in the race, assuming the player actually fits our needs. Hard to get a gun to move, considering their home club will get every chance to match the offer. I'm guessing there may be a few young guys who will eventually want to come home to Melbourne from GC and GWS, but they may not be out and out guns anyway. But doesn't hurt to be able to put in an offer if we are interested, thus the need for the FTF "war chest".
