Why do you think players we don't want and can't get near our best 22 have more value than we are getting? Fish is gone for effectively pick 31, which is bordering on overs.

Setterfield walked to Essendon, played four good games then got injured. Ended with 10 games averaging 20 touches. Pretty much what caused us to not want him in the firs place.

Stocker hasn't done much at St K, and was relegated to sub late in the year.

Dow is struggled to make an impact in 7 years at Carlton. What club would be willing to pay real currency for what would be a speculative pick on their behalf?
I agree, we got overs for Fisher..and agree with all the rest too.

Really? Terrific player but doesnt fill a 'need' at all.
We lack a third forward that can kick 30-40 goals in a season at this point in time. Our forward line is also our most inexperienced line and some experience/leadership would help significantly.

While I don't disagree, another way to look at it is that a club taking Dow has a) more of an idea what they're getting (strengths, weaknesses, areas of prospective improvement) and b) they do not need to have him undertake multiple preseasons to get there. You're banking on current or better performance (and St Kilda will bank on getting more out of him than we did) immediately versus a potentially higher ceiling in 2-3 seasons.

Underpricing non-draft talent is in vogue at present, but it really wasn't all that long ago that clubs paid out firsts for peripheral talent. Jed Anderson was traded for an early second, Brandon Ellis was given a 3 mill contract as a FA which despite winning a flag was enough to trigger a second round pick (39); had they had a worse year, that pick could've been substantially lower. The Jack Higgins trade resembles Fisher's; St Kilda received Higgins and 21 for 17 and a future second.

Either they want him or they don't. If SOS wants to play 'walk to the PSD' again, doing so ensures that he has to pay substantially more to a player with a lower ceiling to guarantee his signature; that play might've been fine at Carlton with Jack Martin (narrator: it wasn't) but at St Kilda their list would already be biting a fair chunk of their salary cap due to the ins over the last 4-5 years.

Overpaying (contract wise) for Dow would not be wise list management. They need to find something that works for us (trade wise) or risk one of the 12 other clubs between them and him taking him first.

Sydney have a selection before they do.

Gutless... lol.

Fisher's been one of my favourite players since his debut, a very smart footballer with lovely skills but ultimately he wasn't very good defensively and that's why he was replaced by options who better fit our needs in that half forward role.

Had similar thoughts on Levi when we let him go. Loved what he did for the club in a tough time, I even have a signed guernsey from The Big Tofu... End of the day we wanted to make space for Harry and Charlie to become our two spearheads and it meant he was pushed out due to his limitations as a footballer.

If stating that is 'clipping a player on their way out' call me gutless all you want. Imo it's the equivalent of calling water wet. The club could have easily held on to Fisher if we wanted but clearly we saw him as replaceable and were happy to let him seek better opportunities for himself.
you dont think that last sentence could've been left out?

A few people confident we will have a deal for Hollands by Monday. Both clubs happy to deal

I hope so. I rate the kid and think he will thrive under Voss

He is definitely a gem. I'm confident that the Acres polishing wheel will polish him right up!

Agree - I posted this earlier, people are too busy worrying about getting a 'win' (a dick measuring exercise if you ask me) rather than our list needs.

Fortunately our list is now in a pretty good mature position where we can just focus on filling gaps and specific needs. It's how Stephen Wells has been able to operate for the last 10-15 years. Identify what we want and go after it, get the deal done early if possible, get the salary off our books and move on.

Nobody has had a bigger impact on Carlton than SOS in the last 30 years. Transformed a short-sighted glorified VFL shambles into a serious AFL club. In other words we'd still be in Essendon's position without him.

So the main difference between SOS and dodo is that the sun does really shine out his ass.
Incorrect on all fronts.

Really concerned about the prevalence of people using ‘ass’ when they mean ‘arse’.
This is an Australian Rules Football forum FFS.
This is one of my favorite things said. Need a moderator who can specialize on the issue.

Chief
How about a site-wide autocorrect of 'ass' to 'arse', or at least 'donkey'?

That’s what Brisbane thought too and now want to move him out after a first hand look.
Gunston’s nowhere near the player he was.
He’s playing “old” and “safe” and that’s not what we need with September in mind …

I still think it's very low risk. He would cost pretty much nothing you would think in trade value and salary. Even if he played 0 games just having him around to help with the development of the forward would be significant.

It's obviously very unlikely with the reports saying he wants to go to Hawthorn but I really don't see ant downside to the move

It's rare, normally impossible that you will pick the best player in the land with pick 1, let alone picking the best player still available at any other pick

Any recruiter that does that over their tenure would be the highest paid staff member at their club
Generally speaking I totally agree in fact I have little interest in watching TAC etc games to 'spot' talent as typically the best of them are early maturers with physical advantages that are just bigger and faster than the average and often fail to develop going forward in AFL - we have had experience with this type of high draft pick early and they just don't improve much really..

but as fort pick #1 hmmmm interesting that in recent times - we have had Naicos ( standout best pick #1 ) JHF ( IMO standout ready to go gun) and this year that bloke who will end up at WC or cost Norfs pick 2and 3....Walsh before them...same....

maybe professionalism standards are now way more developed for aspiring young players and the best of them have already been on years of diet/training/strengthening and therefore are lower risk....maybe explains the ready to go AFL players like Naicos/JHF/Walsh etc.. maybe those rare kids understand that if they want to guarantee selection they have to be ready to go AFL standard and they work to it..

still generally speaking I think drafting is very much a lottery, especially after the first 5-7 ish...

He would cost a list position when in reality, he’s in superannuation mode …

His contract next year is 500k. And he takes a list position.
He's had it.
