In todays West, there is an article on the Melbourne Coaching Group. All ex AFL Coaches (most with not glorious resumes i may add), with a purpose to make Melbourne an elite club again. It got me thinking about our Coaching group. Weve had some good acquisitions with Lyon, Sumich Stone and Hayden however i still feel we have gaps. The Curleys and Priors of this world seem to be the background ie not too sure what their support roles are. Who do people think we need to round out our group? Do we target Ayres, German or is there another talent out there that could provide value to the group?

id rather tip acid in my eyes than see gary ayres in our coaches box.... as for german, we have already had him and if he had of made a good impression he would probably have still been here or atleast been given another role in the AFL.... I still would have liked to see tony michale approached, however i believe he has taken a scouting role for a vic club or something of the like. we are entering the race a bit late now if we want to add to the coaching panel... im not sure who of worth would still be available.... someone like brett kirk would be a massive coup... cant see it happening though as he is loving the ambassadorial role

He he not a fan of the Mullet man? Yeah agree Micale wouldve been a good pick up. I think even Dimmer would have done OK, quite an astute operator. Im thinking to improve, we need to be scouting for quality assistants for next year now. Be interesting to test the waters with someone like Lingy perhaps? Premiership captain with an insatiable appetite for hard work and success.

I, like everyone else on here and I suspect including you, wouldn't know anything about the quality or otherwise of our coaches. You can speculate but you don't know and if we did have gaps then I'm sure they would've been filled.

I don't see Curley and Prior having background roles? Not sure where you get that from? They're employed as Line Coaches and from an outsider looking in, they seem to be front and centre with what's going on around the playing group.

But guess away by all means.

Not having a crack at those guys by any means. I just think if we are all about the pursuit of excellence in every facet, the questions needs to be asked. Do we have the best off field cattle at the moment. If not, why not, if they are available lets bring them in.

You still missed the point, what qualifies you to question the level of experience those coaches bring ?

You are as blind as most on this board, yet you feel the need to doubt the appointments. ( yes, you are having a crack )

How about you find a flaw, or wait until the season is a few weeks old, before criticising.

I have no opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the current coaching group. However if I was looking to add to it I would try and get someone from Geelong, either coach or ex-player, to try and bring some of that culture.

I do know that we are looking at areas such as sports science, nutrition, coaching, player development to assess where we are at, and what the gap is to the best, if any. This bench marking excercise is ongoing and i know that some development opportunities exist (ie Internal staff training and development). With this in mind, the club MAY seek to recruit ready made assistants that excel in the areas we need. My question is who in the market place at present has the runs on the board set to take us to a new level.

who says we dont have the best anyhow? at the end of the day you can only put on the field the players you have available. I think this year, with ross lyon, and the other additions we would have one of the better coaching lists.... i think the problem is, as clay has said in the past, the fact we have had, and to a degree still do have poor recruiting success. that would then lay the blame at the doorstep of bond and lloyd

We may already have the best..if so, happy days! I hope that when the review/benchmark is complete mid year, we affirm this.

I am not sure if the best coaches = premiership. You certainly need good coaching and leadership. Scott needs to do a bit more to be rated ahead of Malthouse, who I would rate ahead of Thompson. But after Footscray, Malthouse has cherry-picked WC and Pies, whereas Thompson created the Cats from a much rawer beginning.

I am not quite sure where Lyon rates. But clearly some issues have been identified and appointments made to address those issues. Good stuff.

For what it's worth, on the surface, Curly and Prior seem mediocre. Would love to be proven wrong. Hopefully, having Lyon and Suma helps their development.
Never forgot Curly's write up after the season where he said Pav had a brilliant season and carried the whole team for the year. Would have thought it was Fyfe and McPharlin who should have been given that mantle. Personally' found it hard to believe he was kept on as our midfield coach. Not sure how much say he had with Mitchell being the main midfield man though.

Coaching group seems pretty fine to me at the moment, but I don't have the faith in Chris Bond that so many on here do. In fact his decision making leaves a lot to be desired.

Thats because we didn't take your Darling, who is a poor mans Ryan Murphy.

Sounds like you want a fluff piece on our coaching staff in the west.

I think we have a solid coaching team, a solid plan and they are sticking to it despite what the media, BF fans or other teams are saying/doing. Its one of those things that if we are successful in the next couple of yrs everyone will be on our band wagon.

Nah, it's because his management of the coaching situation between Harvey's reappointment and bringing Ross Lyon to the club was shoddy.

If that's all it is, then bond hasn't done much wrong. We don't know enough about the relationship between harves and bond or the board to really say what happened could have been done better. perception is often built on scant information, and it sure as heck can convince us that we know better, when what we know might be far from true.

clays right in this instance though, not with darling over pitt as that is still to be determined, but with the recruiting side of it in general.... we have had a lot more busts than winners since bond and co took the reigns, having said that, they need to be commended for their stedfast attitude towards youth, and their poaching of ross lyon.... but we need to do better with our picks... im still bitterly disappointed with the 08 recruitment.... palmer, hinkley and mayne :(... not good enough

What % of successful recruiting would people be happy with? I'd think if 60% of players went on to contribute, you're doing well.

Sacking a coach ~14 months after you reappoint him on a longer contract is hardly quality management, especially given that in the meantime you haven't appointed people in key assistant coach positions to support that coach you've reappointed.

The bulk of the coaching structure has been remade twice in just over a year. I don't understand why his praises are being sung.
