Just curious as to how you became a dockers supporter?

I moved here in 93 from overseas & personally could not understand the game at all. After watching for a few seasons I started to get right into it but didn't really have a favorite team. The Eagles seemed a bit too arogant at the time & I've always found myself backing the underdogs.

I remember watching the Dockers 1st game & liked the flamboyant style they played with a bunch of nobodys. At this point I knew this was the team for me, needless too say after years of violent outburst's towards my tv & copping crap from workmates I dont mind were we are atm. This team needs a bit more direction & some tweaking of the list but we will be all right.

GO DOCKERS

When I was 6 and was still looking for a team (I tried the Bulldogs and even the egirls before that), I went along with my family and became a Bears supporter. Then the merger came (BTW we were living in Melbourne at the time) and I stayed on for a year. But I couldn't handle the supporters (I was only 6-7 at the time) in which I sat outside of Waverly after the final against St.Kilda and wondered "Do I want to continue with the way these supporters are treating me?". I decided to move off Brisbane and I picked teams that I might like to go for. I went through Sydney, Adelaide, Richmond and then Freo struck me and I thought "a clean slate, I like the way they play and are an underdog side going places and when I found out that Adrian Fletcher was moving from Brisbane to Freo (he was my fav player at the time) I went with him and have never looked back.

The next year we moved up here.........

So I haven't been on since the word go but have wanted to!

Back in 96 when i started following them you never knew exactly what you were going to get, like fitzroy won 1 game for the year against us and the minor premiers and grand finalists Sydney only lost 5 and 2 of them were to us. We were consistantly inconsistant and unpredictable.

I know this is directed ti freo supporters but owuld like to have a say (please).
I've never had any control over the teams i follow in any sport. In a way its like the team picks you, and you have no control over it. I find it hard to understand how some people can swap teams at any stage of there lives if they are truely passionate about the sport.

Congratulations. You have confirmed my theory that the only REAL Dockers supporters are those who were born after 1985. Anyone before then is nothing but a turncoat bandwagoner who used to support another side and jumped off. BY this estimation about 90% of Dockers supporters are turncoats. No wonder the supporters go feral at after game functions. They have a history and a genetic disposition to get going when the going gets tough.

But buy memberships rather than sitting at home watching a game.

If you don't buy a membership to support your club, then your opinion on bandwagons, turncoats etc means jack.

That's not bagging anyone who isn't a member of the club they support, just the one that continually dribbles carp about bandwagons.

Are you Mr Ed (formerly known as Danny Green, formerly known as Mark Viduka, formerly known as Adam Gilchrist)? Coz I swear the way you abuse Freo you are somewhat related!

BTW if you're wondering, I have a membership and I live up in QLD!

In the above quotation, take out Dockers and insert Eagles. Is there any difference?.

Touche.

Dont really understand why eagles supporters feel the need to consistantly dribble the same anti-freo bull******** over & over again, it's been that way since day 1. A large majority do more dribbling about us than supporting there own team. TP I dont really give a flying ******** about the eagles & aint fussed how you guys go, grow up mate.

Why is 1985 the key year?

My dockers story - I came to Australia, Perth, in 1987 as a 15yo and kept my soccer interest but got into the footy too. Naturally as a young fellow without a family with AFL preferences I went to the local side West Coast, and followed quite avidly in the bad years and then the good years. I was clearly a West Coast fan! Then along came this Freo side, and also at a time when I really liked freo as a place for the vibe, and realising that although sunny, Perth itself has very little "community" feel, decided that freo would be a cool place to live (nb as yet I have not moved to Freo for $$$ restrictions).

When Freo was coming into existence I was a Toasters fan still, but interested in Freo.

Went to the 1st derby as a West Coast fan, watched a huge win, but for some reason by the 2nd term I knew that I was a Dockers fan and I've never looked back since!

Was that at the start of the quarter when you were 22 points behind or half time when you were 44 points behind?

Don't quite get your point. funkyfreo's comment seemed pretty straight forward. I don't think it had much to do with winning or losing.

i don't think grizzly or frankie vi-dudd-ka understand about that. Grizzly has a whole 7 posts, and I bet they have all been trolling Freo. Ignore the little loser.

But it is just such a bad troll. Should at least try and make some sense!

Well that makes me a 'real' supporter :) (of the eagles)

I've read threads like this on many occasions - people labelling supporters as bandwagonners etc etc and I think its bull******** - look some people are going to be born and raised as a supporter of a particular team and then think of themselves as a 'real' supporter, whereas other people who's family are not sport driven are going to take time finding a team if they indeed ever do. A club is driven by its supporters and we're all different, not everyone has being following a certain club since they were 3, some have - imo one is not more important than the other. Being a member and a supporter of a club is a good thing and supporters have to accept other supporters whether or not they've been a member for 1 year or 10years. - well i hope that made some sense its 2:30am.

Have fun at the derby, cya there ;)

Go you mighty eagles!!!

Exactly. That is why 1985 is the key.... as those born in 1985 would have been 10 years old when the Fremantle Dockers came into the competition. Its around this age when you first really start to support a side. Anyone older than 10 either supported the Eagles or another AFL side.... and if they support the Dockers now its because they are turncoats and jumped off their last AFL side. Eg. YOU
