The AFL, while the Victorian clubs put 100% of their profits back into their clubs.

We're fighting with one hand tied behind our backs.
Victorian clubs playing home games at Etihad have pretty bad deals, they're losing money paying for the AFLs ground.
Well done Dockers, the future looks good.

Both Clubs keep the WAFL alive and kicking .
All AFL Clubs are supposed to be not for profit .
The money they raise is supposed to go back into the lower levels of football to develop and nurture the kids and grow the game

Are they the ones who draw 20k to a game then complain they're losing money?

We used to lose money when we were getting crowds like that too.

That's not as bad then, I always assumed that $3mill had already come out of the operating costs before the WAFL dividend got paid.

Anyone know how much the Vic clubs pay to rent their stadiums?

It's a completely different arrangement - they don't get clean stadiums like we do (well we get Subi almost clean). They don't pay rent as such.

Hard to say whether it's better or worse.

They may not call it rent but it's a massive burden.
I remember reading somewhere clubs actually lose money when they play at Etihad.
The huge dividend only comes the day the AFL receives ownership of the ground.
In the meantime the clubs are copping it in the neck.... apparently.

You'll find the clubs that draw half decent crowds are doing just fine. Carlton had a great financial result this year for example - almost identical profit to us.

And if you've ever been to Melbourne to watch the footy (grand final aside) you'll know how dirt cheap it is. If they made their ticket prices the same as Subi Oval they might make a bit more money.

It's funny when you get some Vic supporters on the main board pronouncing that the WA clubs are fleecing us with their prices and that footy is 'for the people' in Melbourne, only to turn a blind eye to the fact their clubs prey on the weak and vulnerable with their pokies to subsidise those tickets.

Community clubs indeed.

Sure, I go over there a fair bit. I can't believe they don't get bigger crowds at Etihad; the Stadium is fantastic by comparison.
I love going to Etihad . It is an absolutely magnificent venue.
Clubs who have Eti as their home ground like North and Bulldogs just can't get fans to go there. I reckon they could drop the price to $10.00 and still not get people to attend.
For me ? I am happy to pay the coin to have a padded seat and sit down and have a fresh made chicken burger and glass of wine at a table, inside the stadium.
Just imagine what it would be like if Freo had a facility like that in Perth.

We're a strong club with the worst facilities in the AFL and we barely make a profit. The AFL should at least contribute a million to the WAFC.

If we made a profit then we didn't spend enough on development :P

The reason why football is so strong at community level is because the Dockers and Eagles pay for it, and that was precisely the idea when they were set up and owned by the WAFC

The AFL pays for auskick Australia wide, the WAFC does not, but make grants to clubs, run clinics, fund rep teams, etc etc from Auskick up.

The Dockers will build up a big warchest just as the Eagles have done, but it will take a while longer.

I think the WAFC has done a good job, and football in this state is in a better position because of it.

Yep, the WAFC were demonised on this board for a long time but they have set you guys up beautifully and run football in this state much better than the AFL does Australia wide.

Did anyone go to the member's meeting?
One of the big things to come out of that was when Rosich explained that the AFL did not even pay 100% of the airfares for the players to compete in the grand final. It was merely subsidised to an extent (he did not reveal how much). So the club was screwed over by the airlines too.
This needs further investigation - I would have thought that the AFL would take care of all airfares, accomodation etc for all clubs - at least for the finals.

I am pretty we paid extra because we took a private charter.

We should look at Airline Sponsorship?

Try Emirates (now the Pies are too greedy) or Etihad. Perhaps even Virgin. I think Freo would be quite attractive from a marketing perspective after the fan turnout for the GF and finals.

I have to say $650k profit on a $50mill business seems to be cutting it fin to me. But it is a footy club not a profit making business.

As others have pointed out, you are forgetting the $650k figure is after the 4.8m paid to the WAFC...

In addition to this, I saw Son-son speaking at some public appearance recently where he was saying that each player got something like 2-4 GF tickets for family members, so he ended up forking out around 10K for more GF tickets out of his own pocket for family members. I'd imagine a lot of other players would've had to do the same thing too.

I am absolutely shocked to read this. Just plain bizarre.

a record contribution to the WA Football Commission of more than $4.8 million.

If we pay for WA football, who pays for the Vic Football? The AFL or Vic clubs?
Us again apparently.

When we sit at our seat with that $4 extra charge we can spare a thought for all the poor clubs out there that are starving.
