Ball should stick with the Saints

LUKE BALL and St Kilda must wonder how it came to this. Back in February, the Saints' one-time club champion, captain and midfielder sat down during the club's Gold Coast community camp with Nick Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes for a lengthy conversation with The Sunday Age about life as a footballer and St Kilda's 2009 prospects.
Ball, now 25, was a member of the club's leadership group and one of the three club stars hand-picked to sell the Saints and their aggressive new membership drive. He was also one of St Kilda's highest-paid players - definitely in the top three - and seemed headed for a 200-game career with the club.
Despite Ball's status and popularity though, there has always seemed to be something slightly withdrawn about him in the manner in which he presents himself to the world outside his football club. I always put it down to humility mingled with a healthy cynicism towards sporting fame, but - if it wasn't there already - a new ingredient called self-doubt has surely crept in now.
Even as recently as June, we are told, Ball was offered a three-year deal worth about $1 million. That was apparently put forward before coach Ross Lyon and his match committee stunned the football community by dropping the midfielder for a lengthy period and instructing him to work on a series of reported deficiencies, which, in the eyes of his club, put him significantly behind Hayes, Leigh Montagna and Nick Dal Santo.
That Makes me Laugh - Why Caro would Ball would of stayed at the Aints if he was not wanted there.
