I am just curious as to who you all think will become the Geelong Captain after Harley retires.

Although people have already pretty much said Joel Selwood is a sure thing i don't see it happening in the next few years anyways.

I would like to see Mackie as the captain he is still young-ish quite talented and shows when he has marked the ball he has no problem telling people what to do.

Don't see Mackie as captain material to be honest. Donest rally the troops and havnt really seen him in the media or being a figure at the club in general.

One would think that Ling would take over after Harley retires this year as he is the Vice Captain. Although I can see Chapman being a captain for a few years before Selwood is ready also..

I love Gaz, but not sure if he should be captain. Would rather him just go out and do his thing.

I saw that too. And that shows good on field leadership.
Some people just don't want the job of talking to the media etc. but they are happy to show strength on the ground. Mackie may be one of those.

As for the captain. I have no idea. I just get the feeling it won't be Ablett, Ling, or Selwood in 2010 (I don't think ablett or ling will ever captain geelong)

Ling is probably favourite to take over but i think they may pass him over for someone younger. Ablett will never make captain. Not sure why i feel that way but it will never happen.

Whilst Ling would be the obvious choice, wouldn't it be a good tactical move to make Gazza skipper? If we named Ablett as captain, the chance of him moving to the Gold Coast would be near zero. Whilst many deny it, he is without doubt considering a move. Brian Taylor revealed earlier in the year that he was near certain that the Gold Coast were "almost over the line" in convincing Ablett to join them in 2011 having offered him upward of $1.3 million.

I'm not saying I agree with this theory, however surely the club would consider it as an option in securing Gaz for life.

Gary Ablett for captain.

1.3 million a season, wooohh.. Big Smackers, selwood might go for some cash for mine.. Ablett wouldn't go..

I feel Cameron Ling would be ideal for a year or two before an obvious Selwood transition.... However, our form as a team & certain individuals has been sobering in the last 5 weeks..

eg. If Cameron Ling's form along with our other senior leaders drops for the remainder of the season , i would address the pattern and make Selwood Captain immediately for next year.

What happened at the club at the end of 1999?

$1.3 M a season?

We can't get close to matching that; he's not "veteran's list" eligible for way too many years (2014 or 2015?) to help us offset that amount of our cap on one player.

Unless some "franchise player" rule is introduced. Can there be a "matching new franchise offers" exception applied to the salary cap? Unlikely, Demetriou would be happier than a ........ if GAJ went to GC17; he's not interested in helping us keep him.

IIRC the salary cap is meant to prevent the recruiting of expensive players; not retaining them.

Perhaps the most well-known of the NBA's salary cap exceptions, it is so named because the Boston Celtics were the first team permitted to exceed the salary cap to re-sign one of their own players (in that case, Larry Bird). Free agents who qualify for this exception are called "qualifying veteran free agents" or "Bird Free Agents" in the CBA, and this exception falls under the auspices of the Veteran Free Agent exception. In essence, the Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary. To qualify as a Bird free agent, a player must have played three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. This means a player can obtain "Bird rights" by playing under three one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years, or any combination thereof. It also means that when a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Bird exception to re-sign him. Bird-exception contracts can be up to six years in length.

Jnr will never leave the cats this i am 99.999% sure of. Selwood you never know i would hate to see him go but i am sure he would get offered the big bucks to leave. There are many teams that would offer Geelong players double what they are currently getting if they changed teams. Those players including but not limited to Ablett, Selwood, Bartel, Mackie?

Selwood because I have a bet with Patdman regarding this topic.

Ling would be next in line I guess but he may be skipped over for the young gun.

I can understand the arguement about making Ablett captain so he doesnt leave. I dont see why he would feel much affiliation with the cats and a Geelong Captain would never leave the club

I say Ablett will stay at the club for life and there would have to be something massive happen for him to move. Honestly there is such a push for Selwood to become captain and i don't see why. Yes he is a good footballer has the courage to go hard at the ball etc. but how does that make him good captain material? I am not trying to put him down as he has topped my list of favourite players for ages now but i don't see the captain in him unless i am missing something.

I had similar confidence levels until I heard BT on MMM a month or two ago. The man spoke with such confidence it was scary. He said he had spoken with someone very high up in the GC ranks and had been told that they were prepared to offer one big name player 1.3-1.5 million a season to join them- he said Ablett was VERY close to being convinced.

I agree. Demetriou is a power hungry fool and his actions since getting the top job has no doubt sparked the rumoured hatred Brian Cook has for him. I don't think we would ever try and match the $1.3-1.5 million, but would instead appeal to Ablett's loyalty whilst feeding Gazza as much negative information about the GC that we can!

If Gaz really wanted to stay, he would sign already. Whats in Geelong for Gaz, he loves his bro and he is in QLD, so why not go. 1.3mil-1.5mil is 3 years of footy at Geelong. He knows he wont get captain, he complains to much. I would prefer to keep selwood and offer him the captain roll. But the best players for captain at Geelong is Chapman and Ling.....

Because his Bro will be back in VIC next year ;)

After reading the Gary Ablett senior book yesterday, I wouldn't be surprised if Junior took the money and ran

And not one iota of proof to that has ever been offered. More BS media speculation. If there isn't a story worth airing, make up a rumour!

For two years , I'd go with either Ling, Chapman or Enright
Ling has the leadership side covered, Chapman does as well but as is playing better footy. Not sure of the off ground stuff but I was just trying to think of a Harley type and his name popped up. Brave and probably has his best season ever. I would have traded him after 06 ( shows what I know) but now he is close to our best defender

As far as anyone leaving for dollars , I'd challenge anyone to turn their back on that sort of money. Its happened before , it will happen again. Players leave , new players come , no matter what the Hoops are the prime importance , not who is wearing them.
