I was at Westfield Shopping Centre today and my kids were playing at some playground. I noticed a little boy who would have just started walking wearing a Collingwood jacket.
I said to the mother of the boy "Great Jacket the kid is wearing".
She goes to me "Yeah his father used to play for Collingwood".
I said "really who" ?
She says " I don't know if you remember Mick McGuane".
Had an interesting little conversation with her.
Great to see that Micky still loves Collingwood.
He used to be one of my favourite players. He could have been of the Collingwood greats if not for injuries and a bit of lairising.
Let's just hope the kid has some of the old man's talent.
Him and Jett could be team mates. :thumbsu:

...She says " I don't know if you remember Mick McGuane"...

I always remember him from Hotham St in 89 when my mates had just moved to Melbourne and started their apprenticeships. One of them went to get a slab from The Hotham and came back saying - "Guess who I just had a couple of pots with - Mick Ma-F^$&%^n-Guane!" :)

Watching him in action on Sunday (via Footy Flashbacks) was a treat - hope his little'n has the same mongrel in him.

Used to be my favourite Pies player, I had #34 on my back right up until he left, then switched to #5 for Bucks.

Loved the goal against Carlton at the MCG, one of my favourite Pies moments. :)

Mick McGuane was a Collingwood great, not doubt about it. Yes injuries ruined the back end of his career, but he was a class player for a long time. He has a great football brain and why the club has no utilized him more in a coaching role is beyond me.

Look no futher than his coaching attempt at Balwyn last season for why we didn't use him. I don't know if he has coached before that or is coaching somewhere else now but Balwyn clearly had the most talent in their list and they failed horribly.

I think his mistake was coaching in the country leagues and trying to do his own thing. You're almost better off being a nobody assistant coach at AFL level even with a crap team than to try impressing at other levels.

The trend now is all assistant coaches are taken straight out of the game (or only 1 or 2 years break) or from other AFL clubs. It's a rarity a coach bides their time at VFL/Country/WAFL/SANFL/Country/TAC Cup level and after a few years gets hired. Mark Neeld our defensive coach is probably the only recent exception.

I think you will find Micky has coached at least a couple of premiership teams in vaious leagues, on at least 2 occasions he turned the bottom team to a premiership team within 2 years (Burnie in Tassie & another team in country Vic).

Mick was my faourite player once Daics hung up the boots. He was a ball magnet, had great disposal by foot (until his groin packed it in) & a dead eye kicking for goal (set shot or on the run). Had a great night out in Devonport with him & Gav Crossisca many moons ago, we drank the place out of Ouzo.

Ramere + Ouzo = Trouble.......

Fair enough, like I said I don't know anything about his coaching history except for one season. I guess judging anyone by one season is a bit harsh.

His coaching record is outstanding. Took burnie to a couple of flags and then took gisborne to 3 straight GFS and 2 flags in the bendigo league after they had a big jmp up from the riddell league only a couple of years earlier. I know quite a few people who played under him they say he had by far the best footy brain they had ever seen. He was also very tough and disciplined as a coach. They main problem mick will not get a look in at senior afl level is that he has way too much baggage. Image is important and his is terrible.

As far as is son is concerned my thoughts are so what if someone saw him at a shopping centre. All I want to know is if the kid can play the game if not then he is just another joe blow in the street

Spot on Ant.

Skills are less trasferrable (father to son) than pure physical features (pace, height, fitness, etc). Skills are acquired rather than inherited.

McGuane's strengths were his skills and his brain - he had very little going for him physically, and in today's game would be less effective.

His son, therefore should inherit his physical capabities but not necessarily have an edge skill-wise, and therefore would put him squarely back in the pack with every other young kid.

We should be looking out for S Rocca's young lad - he had every chance of being big, strong, and having a massive kick on him.
