So we potentially have a forward line in the coming years that contains talls of Hurley, Crameri, Ryder, Daniher, Gumby (dare I say it) and Bellchambers (rotating through ruck with Ryder/Daniher).

Is that too tall? They are all immensely talented (Daniher assumed) but will we need to trade at some point or do we move someone down back (Ryder/Hurley etc)?

This is a hypothetical obviously assuming they all get up but I'm interested to hear what people think.

Trust in the force, young padawan.

Don't get me wrong. I don't dare question Emperor James and his master plan. Just interested to know what his next move is :)

Hurbleton LIVES!!!!

(Yeah ok, I was just so stoked to get a photo with the two I wanted to post it again...... :D:D:D)

Great photo. I loathe I missed my chance with these fellows. There was a small window and you took it. I did not :(

Loved talking to the players though. Can't believe how big they all are. Hurley looks about 195!

Ha ha mate; I'm sorry - I did my best to include all of us in every photo, but I got a three second window to get to Gumby and Hurley, and I took that mofo!

First thing my wife said when looking at the photo - "you look like you are ignoring Hurley".

Come on, I love Hurls, but I LOVE THE GUMBY!!

Haha, you're snubbing off Hurley.

I love Gumby a lot too, but man, why so mean to the Animal? :D

Also, Gumby looks huge now. Especially around the traps and shoulders area, looks bigger than Hurls. No more fragile.

Going tall isn't bad. Remember when we had Fish, Vander and TD up forward. Paddy, Hurley and Gumby\Belly could wreak the same amount of destruction. We just need to get the timing right. Plus with Alwyn, Gus and Leroy crumbing well we may have one of the most potent forward lines in the game. But.... it's all in the delivery. If our mids can keep winning the hard ball and giving accurate delivery then who knows how many goals our forwards (big and small) can kick.

Luke, use the force, run to Dagobah, run to Dagobah.

I'm as excited about the next guy about Joe Daniher but when was the last time a KPP (Ruck or Fwd) made an impact before the age of 22-23. Franklin? Jon Brown?

Odds are he won't be doing much his first few years. Mind you, would love to be proven very wrong!

I was more looking a few years out. Hurley (22), Ryder (24), Crameri (23), Belly (22) and Gumby (23) are all still very young. Will all be up & about when Daniher hits his straps hopefully. From what I have read it seems that Joe may be an early developer too, though this could just be media hype, who knows.

I wouldn't worry about height.

Ryder, Gumby, Hurley and Crameri are all more than mobile enough and it is mobility and ground level work that is the issue. When supplemented with the extreme pace of Davey, Jetta and Colyer the forwad line will have no problems.

Rather than looking at 196cm, 197cm, 193cm and 190cm and being worried about there being too many cheifs you should think of it as Crameri and (lets just say) Ryder replacing the midszied lead up options which have been filled by Monfries and Zaharakis in the last few years. Talk about an upgrade.

It will work. It will be the element of our side that will set it apart from everyone else.

With Gumby's performance on Saturday and the obvious conclusion he is 100% fit this thread needs to be revisited.

Gumby, Ryder, Crameri and Hurley? Can they all fit in the forward line? I say yes.

Firstly for small forwards Davey can play 90% game time up forward and only rest on the bench. Jetta can spend 80% forward, 10% midfield and 10% rest.

This leaves the remaining 30% to resting mids. I accept my percentages are probably wrong as I'm not totally up with what percentage players spend on the bench.

Also Jetta can play on a wing if Monfries is playing a defensive forward role.

Now the talls.

Well Crameri has been very good as a full forward this year but I think he can also be effective as a third tall and use his running gifts. He would be amazingly damaging if a guy had to cover lots of ground to man him. Not many defenders would be capable of doing that and matching him for strength. He is great at getting his hands free in a tackle so would be helpful in congestion 70-80m from goal. He has a booming kick so him getting the ball from 60m out is dangerous for opposition. He is great running back with the ball so playing further up will give him more room for this. Also when the ball is deep in defense and everyone has pushed back he would be a great one to kick in front of to run the ball forward.

I'd like to see Hurley have a crack close to goal. He can play as a spearhead in much the same manner as Viduka would for the socceroos. With the other talls in the forward half we could easily spread their tall defenders and he can have a field day one on one. I would like to see just him and Davey within 35m from our goal on many occasions. Also with our run and spread he can come and meet the ball and dish off to those running forward.

Gumby has all the tools to be a fantastic CHF, providing he remains healthy. Good speed, great size, very good tank and a good set of hands. After watching him on the weekend I'm totally convinced he's gonna make up come back. After so much time out he'll need people to show patience as he'll struggle to read the play a lot of the time but I'm hoping that that all comes back to him. With so many good players around him and hopefully being in a successful team that give forwards plenty of opportunity I think he will eventually get it right.

Ryder is a player with skills that would allow him to play nearly any position on the ground. I see him as nearly as good as Goodes, less strength and intensity being the biggest difference, but having more defensive strings to his bow. I would like him to play as a high half forward with permission to go where he wants. He would work great in tandem with Jetta in this role. He would of course have a run in the ruck too. Players under pressure on the half back line can just kick high out the front of him and be pretty confident that if given a chance to run onto it he's pretty much unstoppable.

Defensive pressure is obviously huge in this day and age. I don't think the combination of these four will cause a problem with that. Ryder and Crameri can tackle, chase and harras as good as most small forwards. This leaves us with only two talls who we have no evidence that they'll be much chop in this area. Most teams carry a few tall forwards like this. I also think the coaches can get a lot of improvement from Hurley in this area.

I'm excited!

Hoping I'm not acting like a Richmond supporter in regards to Gumby!

Fitness pending (and that’s a massive pending)... I see a forward line in the second half of the year and next year that centres around Hurley, Gumby and Crameri. Plus a resting ruck most of the time I guess.

I don’t see the height as a big issue, all three of them seem to be quite different players which is what matters. I think Hurley is our true KPP forward, he crashes and bashes and uses his body. From what we’ve seen of Gumby he’s predominantly a high-leading forward. If he can get up that’s definitely something we can use. He could be 6”6 or 6 foot nothing, a good lead-up forward offering options for blokes coming of half-back is a definite plus for us.

Crameri just does as he pleases and would relish running around creating havoc on possibly the third “big” defender.

Even with a resting ruck I don’t see it as an issue because I think Gumby is a different type that we don’t really have, the fact that he’s so tall is just a bonus and another headache for the opposition.

I think if we look at what Bomber did at Geelong, they always played Pods/Mooney, Hawkins, a medium-ish type in Johnson, plus Ottens and another ruckman. Then they had their crumbers.

As for Daniher... god knows... worry about it in two or three years when it’s possibly a selection issue, plenty will have changed by then anyway. He’s said to be a ruck / forward and that’s where he’ll play if and when he comes on.

Gumby Hurley Jetta
Ryder J.Daniher Crameri
Teams would have a field day running out of defence

Gumby put in a solid VFL game. That's hardly proof that he'll make it in the AFL. I know ill be unpopular for holding this view, but we still don't know if he'll be able to hold his body in shape long term. Until I've seen evidence that he'll make it long-term in the AFL, I'm unconvinced. Right now, our future forward line is:

Monfries-Hurley-Colyer
Crameri-Ryder-Jetta

You can play 3 tall marking players in the 50. You can sprout on about West Coast; but the difference is that they had Buckskin, LeCras, Masten and co providing outstanding pressure.

Fish

You make a compelling argument for playing 4 talls in the forward line - But who will lose his place in the team.

It can only work if Gumby plays as the second ruck.

After last night are we looking at a structure more like Hurley, Hooker, Carlisle, (Pears) in the backline and Daniher, Gumby, Crameri in the forward line with Ryder our first choice ruckmen??

That's an awesome spine if that's the case, can't think of any opposition forwardline that we couldn't blanket with that backline and the marking power when we go forward is dangerous (if we kick straight, we'll win). Daniher to help Paddy out whenever he gets tired.
