Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

For those wondering what happened to Scott Reed in the recent win by the Rams in round 7, he was omitted due to injury after his previous 23 possession performance.

Jaxson Barham put in a BOG effort for the Geelong Falcons in a loss to the Dandenong Stingrays in round 7 of the TAC Cup.

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

I'll head down to Trevor Barker Oval in a few weeks time to watch Sandringham (Dragons) versus Geelong (Falcons). I won't make any promises; but if I go, I'll get out the notebook and write down a few notes on Jaxson's chances of being drafted to Collingwood. If he is any good I'm sure Hine has seen him or (at least) know of his strengths and weaknesses.

Scott Reed has a great footy brain for his age.

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

Can we just clear this up right now, to avoid years and years of it in the future:

His name is spelled JAXON Barham - There is no S in it.

based on what i have seen i think jaxon would be 50:50. Not sure the Pies are going to have a lot of picks this year. Early days but expecting Burns and Bucks to go around again. Wakes, Richards, Davies look like only obvious delistings at this stage. Licca and Lonie would be wondering if their futures lay with the Pies.

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

From a few in the know I've spoken to, Jaxon would definitely be worth a later round pick without any doubt.

Wakes, Richards and Davies are GAWN, considering the mandatory three cuts, with Iles, Lonie, Leon and Licca looking over their shoulders - Bucks and Burns outside shots to retire.

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

Macaffer is an actual Collingwood rookie, which is of course rather confusing. Perhaps it isn't just my spelling of Jaxon Barham's name that was misguided :D. (In my defence, I've only gone off the TAC Cup site with that one)

Macaffer's been a bit slower in making an impact than Wellingham and Clarke, his kicking has been pretty average in the games I've seen. I'm not sure whether it's because of perceived pressure causing him to rush his kicking action, but it has definitely let him down. Danny Nicholls was retained on the rookie list after last season, so perhaps this is an option they'll consider for Brent Macaffer if he doesn't have a rapid form reversal.

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

Nick Perry's Penrith Swans beat South Campbelltown Kangaroos this week, but individual goalkickers, best players etc. are yet to be entered.

Supposedly the Falcons have three potential father-son selections on their list, one of whom is Barham, but I haven't gotten any details on the other two to date.

Jaxon Barham had 22 possessions on the weekend for his BOG, 70% effectiveness kicking, 92% effectiveness handballing, 1 goal, 1 behind.

If Iles is looking over his shoulder, where would Stanley, Anthony and Cook be looking? none of them have even played yet?

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

TRS should I change the thread title to "Future Magpies Watch" to avoid confusion.

I thought his name was Jaxson too, I got that off the VFL/TAC Cup footy record
Whatever you think is appropriate is fine with me :).

I added in the links for people to follow the "official" rookies, so as to make it less confusing from my end too. :thumbsu:

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

Hmm... There appears to be some confusion about the name - I'm relatively sure it's Jaxon, as that's how it is on the official TAC Cup Team List file, downloadable here, but it is spelled with the 'S' on the actual results page...

Probably best to keep it simple... Jackson it is then!

I believe he's 19, and is at the Falcons in a similar vein to what Goldsack was at the Power last year.

Barham kicked a goal in a loss this week, but wasn't listed in the best. No other stats available as yet.

I searched for Jaxson Barham and his name appears like this in a Geelong school newsletter, but there are fewer results for Jaxon Barham.

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

Hmm... Perhaps we should go with Jaxson from now on - Seems to be slightly more evidence to back that one up...

Re: Magpies Rookie Watch

Pretty quiet this week...

Thomas Young didn't line up for Campbelltown, not sure why.

Nick Perry had a win with Penrith, but no best or goalkickers are listed.

Scott Reed's Rams didn't have a game.

Sharrod listed in the best for Williamstown after having the VFL/WAFL game break last week, good job :thumbsu: Danny Nicholls kicked two goals but didn't make the best, nor did newly elevated rookie Martin Clarke.

Brent Macaffer snagged 5 in a win for the Willi reserves over Box Hill, and made the best players. :)

Jax(s)on Barham's efforts have already been discussed, he had 12 possessions and kicked 1.1, didn't make the best for the game.

Rugby league worries over AFL Sydney pushTim Morrissey

June 04, 2007 12:00am

AFL's push into rugby league's heartland is seen as more than a passing fad - it is creating some real fear.

Former NRL great Mark Geyer, a product of and player for Penrith, in Sydney's west, said the AFL was making serious inroads.

"The people at NRL have to pull their finger out and start fighting fire with fire," Geyer said yesterday.

"If we want to remain the biggest winter sport in Sydney, we can't rest on our laurels.

"This infiltration by the AFL has been going on now for probably a good five years.

"Without wishing to throw daggers at anyone, the AFL boys are doing things so much better."

Geyer, who has lived in league's heartland all his life, is noticing a growing AFL presence in the west.

He's seeing "AFL sticks" popping up everywhere and has seen AFL scouts attending Penrith under-12 league games taking down notes and talking to promising young league players about switching to Aussie rules.

"It's definitely a concern. I don't think it's a major catastrophe just yet," Geyer said.

"But they are all playing Aussie rules at schools now, and in suburbs where there was predominantly rugby league posts, there's now AFL sticks, so it's definitely a concern.

"An AFL tsunami is slowly building and it's going to swamp everything if we don't do anything."

The AFL's decision to promote club-based scholarships to talented young NSW teens has become a growing worry for rugby league.

The scheme is designed to ensure Australian rules infiltrates the minds and conscience of Sydney's elite young athletes.

Last year, AFL clubs signed 23 NSW kids aged 14-17 to scholarships. This year, the count is at 13, and expected to grow.

Nick Perry is the latest talented junior football star to be plucked by an AFL club out of rugby league's home.

The Penrith 14-year-old is the second kid out of "rugby league central" to be recruited by Collingwood through the AFL-endorsed talent-spotting scheme this year.

Nick, in year 10, has won a $20,000 scholarship with the Magpies.

He will continue his schooling in Sydney but will fly to Melbourne a minimum of four times a year for specialised training.

"Collingwood is one of the best clubs in Australia," said Nick, who switched from rugby league and soccer to Aussie rules five years ago.

"To get a scholarship from them, you can't ask for much more.

"It is rugby league central out here, but it's changing.

"My friends just asked me to come and play AFL, that's how I got into it.

"When I got to high school, kids were still calling it 'Gay-FL' and stuff like that, but I don't really care. I love playing the game and that's all that matters.

"I'm an assistant coach for our under 12s and we've got kids in that team who don't care about rugby league, they just want to play AFL."
