Its a marginal value calculation with lots of factors involved. They didn't want to be seen to be blocking a player who wanted to return home and was unsettled, and at that point wasn't a Brownlow medallist. They also weren't going to suffer reputational damage from letting him go (we would).
Also remember if you actually match then either they have to trade or the player would have to go to the draft. It's the tacit threat of matching that allowed the trade for him to happen.

- Jack Steven is very good.
- Jack "Could have been Bont' Billings is C grade at best - 1 or 2 good games a season isn't going to cut it.
- Paddy "Could have been Petrecca" McCartin is overweight, struggles to run out games because of his diabetes and has the agility of a sloth.


They have some good talent that's not quite A grade - Bruce, Gresham, Carlisle, Roberton, Membrey, Acres. But every team in the comp could come up with a list such as that, even us!

You had the oldest line up in the comp, you're kidding yourself ,you lot are stuffed. 15 of your side have played over 100 games . I know its hard for you to comprehend but your line up is old . 5 of our kids playing for Peel are under 19. Also if you hadn't noticed our best Saturday were Blakely , Balic ,Langdon ,Weller,Hughes all young and under 20. Logue 18 . Fyfe, Neale, McCarthy , Hill, Hamling,Grey all 25 and under. We are set for years.
