Every year around ANZAC day we get the familiar bitching and moaning about Essendon and Collingwood keeping the blockbuster games for themselves and not sharing them with other clubs. It isnt fair when anyone else could fill the MCG just as easily on such a day.

Yet here we are, Easter Monday an two of Victorias great white hopes getting ready to set themselves up for a finals tilt and their combined fans cant even half fill the MCG. Is a disgrace and time this game was given to someone else. Dogs Vs Saints would be a good one. At least the Bombers and the Pies fans have the courtesy and passion to turn up and watch their teams play.

Yep looks a pretty poor crowd, maybe 30k at a push.
Dogs v Aints maybe over 45k.
Lets face it though Essendon and Collingwood are far and away the biggest clubs in Victoria and the rest of 'us' can only dream to have the same levels of support.

Quite happy for Dons & Pies to keep Anzac Day but Easter weekend is notorious for poor crowds especially Easter Sunday due to family commitments so probably give them a bit of slack for today as a lot of people still travelling and it can't be measured with normal Monday long weekend games

If all the members turned up (say 25,000 each) plus the supporters who weren't members they should, repeat SHOULD get 60,000. No excuse for not going - perfect weather, start of the season, etc.

However, what are some reasons for not going? Unattractive style of football, both teams are not likely to be finalists this year, TOO BLOODY EXPENSIVE (cost my four teenage kids over $10 each to get into Telstra Dome Saturday night), etc.

You think over $10 each is expensive for a teenager?! Over here it's about that for a child...and that's in the budget area!

Melbourne supporters generally sit on the camera side of the MCG so you rarely see them on TV. Hawthorn supporters are just bloody useless.

Agreed. $10 dollars each is a bargain by Gabba standards.

Why does the AFL charge a different admittance fee for different stadiums?

God knows. I think it's only final matches and preseason matches that are around the same price (can't remember exactly).

I remember at the Saints/WC game last year at Subi I was talking to a lady who I think had flown over from Melbourne. I had just gone to buy a bottle of water and Mum had given me $5 and I gave her like $1.50 change. The lady basically said it was cheaper over east for tickets, while the food at Subi was cheaper.

Before I became a member I (sorry, my Mum :p ) was paying around $20 for a concession per game in a budget block.

$10 or whatever they paid is expensive? Are you being serious? It's probably cheaper than a movie ticket.

I have a membership (which is supposed to be cheaper than paying at the gate) and it works out to about $42 per game (almost equivalent to 4 teenagers). C'mon they're teenagers, not little kids who are dragged along and don't even know whats going on.

They set an arbitrary age (14) in which kids can't get in at the kid's price. This should be 18 years of age. Once they get to 18 they should pay an adult price.

If they show a school id card thing they can pay the concession fee.

In Victoria, you can (a) get tickets to games pretty much every week and (b) get them for less than half the price of pretty much every other state.

In WA, you have not been able to buy ANY tickets to Eagles games for 3 years (except the leftover visiting supporter crap seats which are gone in about 10 mins) and you generally pay around $40 for available tickets to Dockers games.

Always amazes me how much Vics whinge about footy ticket and food prices when they have the easiest access and cheapest tickets in the country.

I agree. I think the prices are very reasonable in comparison to other forms of entertainment.

Excuses, excuses, excuses - that's all I am hearing now. Don't dismiss the pulling power of Melbourne and Hawthorn! :o

Anzac Day is a public holiday mid-week (Wednesday). There's also other things to do. The footy takes precedent in my household, but I know heaps of people like to spend the day with family, friends, etc.

FWIW, Collingwood and Essendon are the biggest drawcards in the game at the moment.

In the best stadiums. Imagine the whining if Victorians had to watch the footy at a place like Subi.

I doubt there is another two Vic teams who would havegotten a poorer turnout today than Melbourne and Hawthorn. Rat**** effort from their members, supporters and fans. Only game on for the last day of a long weekend.

I haven't got the figures on me, but at a guess I'd say 45-50,000 were their today - not a bad attendance considering the crap in the first round.

While the GSS looked sparsely populated the Olympic, Ponsford and Members area looked pretty packed.

The MCG is very deceptive with crowds, its not like the TV studio where the AFL packs the crowd in to make a 30,000 crowd look like a sell out.

Bull****, outside Essendon/Collingwood/Carlton and Richmond games, Hawthorn vs. Melbourne is consistantly the highest drawing fixture out of the Victorian clubs.

Most of the supporter/members/fans seating for MCG (non Collingwood games) - like at Telstra Stadium in Sydney, is on the non broadcast side of the ground.

BTW, ANZAC Day 2004 only drew 55,000 surely at a ground with an 80,000 seat stadium with the occasion it could have drawn more then at best probably a mere 10,000 more then the Easter Monday game today between 15th and 16th.
