Hey all,
I am currently doing a thesis on Gary ablett senior. I need to get some opinions on if you guys think overall if he is a Villain or a Hero and why?

it would also be great if you guys have or know of any websites where i can go to ask other people of there opinions or i you know of any sites with info on gaz snr. Particularly on his rise to Fame and his fall to Villainy.

Gary Snr. was definately a hero in the eyes of Geelong supporters and also many non Geelong supporters who would travel to Geelong games just to see what he would/could do. On the field during his hey day he was unstoppable as his career statistics clearly show. Unfortunately though for Geelong and for Gaz, the wheels fell of when his career was IMO prematurely ended by Gary Ayers. Had Gary been given maybe one or two seasons (as a pinch hitter in the forward pocket - I realise he had a serious knee operation but he was playing on one leg and in his last game kicked 7 against Richmond 2s) maybe his life would not have had so much turmoil. I personally would love to see Gary back at Geelong in some sort of capacity whether it be skills coach or forward coach. He woud be a great assset and an inspiration to our younger brigade.

As far as information on the great man there is truckloads. If you type "Gary Ablett" into Google's search engine you will get hundreds of sites to look at. Some though may not be quite true but you get that on the net!

GARY ABLETT GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTON!!!

Depends who you are really. For mine hes a dead set hero, but to some extent I can see why some people may think he is a villan, although the media has done a fair job of manipulating the story a fair bit to make him look the villan.

Just like to say thanks for every voting and replying hopefully i can get a few more responses on the topic so i can build up on people opinions :)

absoloute true footy hero!!!.....one of the best players if not the best player ive ever seen, for those who would call him a villan is just stupid when everything that he has done outside of his footy life is none of any of our business so i say who cares about that as those things happen in the world every day. i think we should look at his fantastic career and im sure everyone would agree that he is one of the best players ever there is no one that could critasize that!!!! he is only a villan in the media's eyes because they were the one's that gave him that false 'image' they just stirred it up when it has nothing to do with them!...gary is a true champion!

Totally agree and those words sum it up

Under the pump , id say hero but I dont like the concept.
Raising sombody to hero status or lowering him to villian status makes me feel like we are talking about a superhuman cartoon charater or something.Ablett is a human who played with super human football skill.Ablett made my jaw drop watching him play, he made my hair stand on end and he also made me question how anybody could be better than him at footy, but hero???A hero, to me places himself in danger to rescue/defend others from/in danger.A soldier,a fireman etc.The man passing a burning house and gos in to save a child. The press that GAS recieved after finishing was amplified because he had been placeed up there on that hero hill.In general the press love to create then deflate,it sells papers.TV and radio are just as bad, how often have we heard commentators say a "What a man" when a player has performed a brave act on the field. Its wrong I feel, what a player or what a talent but the "man" might be an idiot or a brainiac , a top bloke or an A hole, in truth hes just been blessed with the right genes.

Rizzo , if you want some info on gazza there are a couple of good books to read. Playing God -The Rise And Fall Of Gary Ablett and another written by Ken Peise.

Yep Reading the Gary Linnel book. It really makes you think, he really did do alot of good.

Ask any Geelong supporter and they will tell you that the man is one of if not the best player that they have ever seen. I guess to open a real can of worms you should post the question on the main board and get a feel for what supporters of other clubs would say about gaz.
For me it is simple, I may be blinded, but in my life time he is the best player that I have seen play the game. However I am not sure if hero is the right word for gazza, i would think that he was a champion rather than a hero.
It is a very tricky situation with his off field life and what has happened has some what tainted his career as a footballer, some people can not remember the man that would fill the G just to see him kick 10 goals in a match and destroy 4 oponents in the process. No matter what he has done off field the man is a true champion of our game, but I am not sure if he is a hero.

ok
we all know that he is a legend of the game of football
we all know he should be in the AFL hall of fame
i dont give a flying f*ck who you are he is a legend
the best i ever saw
one of my greatest memories was being at the game where he kicked his 100th goal
GARRY ABLETT IS A LEGEND

time will heal,
eventually ablett will be remembered for his freaky football ability, and not for offield stuff, as time goes on stories become exaggerated and he will become an even better player in peoples eyes.
