He's certainly open to that. He said as much this week in an interview.

As an outsider looking in, I feel that's why he works so well at port.

Maybe a generalization, but everyone (or at least the cast majority) there you'd think is trying to prove they are are afl quality with the hope of being elevated - this is from coach all the way down.

Seems like a situation where there is complete alignment, and couple that with a period of success it becomes self perpetuating.

If I was in his position I'd be saying the exact same thing. I do think a GC is a totally different beast though, and if he was appointed and also successful there that would be a body of a very impressive career imo.

Ayres coached for 10 seasons between 95 & 04, he's had his crack at coaching in the AFL

but if a club wanted to give him another go - that's their perrogitive. Winning a VFL flag doesn't necessarily make one a good AFL coaching candidate IMO

Long time ago mate. Game is vastly different now. His best bet would be an assistant perhaps.

Stupid argument. Most people on Bigfooty can proclaim to know the way modern footy works so why couldn't an experienced coach who works with players who have been in and around the system.

Ayres late dad was the local copper and with Ablett Senior being occasionally in strife with the law as a teenager it wasn't a good mix for a freindship
There was also the pathetic Warragul Drouin rivalry. I don’t know why that sort of bullshit existed, but if you were from one town, you were expected to not like people from the other. It wasn’t Footy related either as they were in different leagues.
I suppose it’s just the way it is.
Yarragon Traf have it
Bunyip Garfield had it for a while, might still

Screw Ayres, Marty Mattner is the coach of the future.

thats a good call

Being a Sturt fan it is amazing what he has achieved at the double blues. Back to back flags (beating Port's AFL reserves team this year) plus our reserves & under 18's both winning this year as well

Has been an assistant at Sydney already so be interesting to see what his next move is

Fairly significant gulf between VFL and AFL.
There is and yet he beats teams stocked with AFL players with only VFL players at his disposal.

Gotta be doing something right.

The secret sauce is those VFL players are ex-AFL players

I would say that Ayres is a better coach now than he was in the 1990's? I can't imagine a new bloke will take Gold Coast on, it's a career killer going up there as a coach! Ayres has nothing to lose, he might actually be what they need? The "Bums" should at least talk to him.

The big question I have over Ayres being the Gold Coast coach is that he's coaching against state league opposition. There's a big difference between coaching against teams in the AFL than the VFL. Has already had his chance at AFL level twice before and has been out of the system for something like ten years. Gold Coast are better off appointing one of the level 4 coaches or someone like Ratten who has coached at AFL level but has stayed in the system under the best coach in the league.
