I'm actually a Gary Lyon fan.
He's a bit of a surly prick, let's be honest. I went to a footy clinic once when I was a kid at the Sandy Oval and Gary Lyon was the unfortunate young VFL rookie that drew the short straw and had to tolerate the antics of a bunch of 11yo's. I was cheeky, and he made me run laps.
Never heard of a kid being told to piss off and run laps during a clinic, but here we are.
But fair enough..I deserved it. To be honest, I kind of respected it. Even though I was a child. That was the moment I started following Gary Lyon's career.
Superstar, and very underrated player. Very underrated. Absolute gun.
I've always been a fan and followed his career both on the field and in the media fairly closely since that fateful day.
The whole Billy Brownless stuff never particularly bothered me. I never thought he was some sort of monster or shit bloke. I didn't care at all to be honest.
But....
I've gotta say, I'm not sure I'm a big fan of him in this new 'voice of the game' type role he's been thrust into.
He kind of speaks shit and frankly, isn't very good at this role.
There's kind of three layers of football media. There's the top layer - which is sort of your Howie type guys. Call the game, offer the high level opinion or vibe occassionly, but generally be aware that people are not particularly interested in your views if the game. Huddo has mastered this. He knows his place.
The middle layer is the guys (and girls for that matter) that are there for their opinion. But it's not portrayed as the opinion. They're experts in their own way - but we all know that they're one of many. Take their views with a grain of salt.
The lower layer are the gurus. The Leigh Matthews sort of guys. The Jason Dunstalls. This is rare air. I don't agree with them that much FWIW, but they're certainly presented as the 'voices of the game' to us.
These guys are considered gurus of the game. Their word is gospel. We all wait with baited breath to hear them utter their words of wisdom. And when they do - it becomes fact.
I feel that Gary has been forced/promoted by his masters from the middle layer, to this lower level.
We're now expected to take his word as gospel. We're being forced to believe he's one of the footy gurus.
I don't think he's comfortable in this space, and I also don't think his insight warrants it.
STFU Gary. You're speaking shit dude
