On people asking him to help the club: "I can't do it. Circumstances won't allow me"

This was seconds after saying how heavily invested he is in the club, how his adult life has been the Melbourne Football Club, how he was involved enough to be part of the decision to hire Neeld.

Distancing himself now things are going pear shaped. Using his media committments as a shield.

Well if he is contracted for employment in his media roles, what can he really do at this point? He's hardly going to quit the media to take on his first AFL coaching gig (if that's what people are expecting of him) after the season has already started, with no time to prep or develop his own plan over the pre-season, etc. Would just be dooming himself to fail.

It has been plainly obvious for years that he's afraid of failure. It's why he's never coached at AFL level.

There is plenty he can do whilst keeping his media commitments. He either has to put up or shut up. He can't keep pulling strings in the background. He can't profess his love for the club, and distance himself at the same time.

Or he could give the media up for the club that he "loves".

Why does it always have to be Gary Lyon? He's a media man. He has drawn the line and said "No", so where are the other Melbourne people willing to step up to the plate and help the club ?

Hell, they're probably already on board and working hard, but everyone is making a sport of potting Melbourne at the moment Not sure that the whole place needs a bomb put under it, just because their players have lost the plot in the first 2 games

As has been pointed out by others - he is just waiting for MFC to one day magically become contenders, then he'll become coach "in the best interests of the MFC reaping the maximum rewards from their position". Typical MFC downhill skier. Reality is they will never get to that position in his lifetime.

Then why is he involved in signing coaches and the like? Note he was very quick to jump down Caro's throat when she said he had a hand in Bailey's sacking...

He's happy to be involved in the positive times. Not just a media man, then.

Yes, but none of them gave up their media commitments to coach or put themselves into the Presidential role once the season had already started, did they? If you're going to make such a siesmic shift in your career, commit yourself properly and make a difference, jumping on the horse in the run isn't the way to do it.

How would Lyon help the club exactly?
He could stop hurting the club for staters. He's happy to be a faceless man, time to put up or shut up.

He also said he's not interested in doing it.

Right or wrong it's his choice, and Melbourne need people who are willing to commit a significant amount of time towards fixing the club. Gary doesn't want to. It's hard work and it could damage his reputation and standing in the game.

He prefers being a respected member of the media and mucking around on TFS with his best mate JB on a Thursday night.

You mean like during the process to find a new coach?

JB helped North, who were a basketcase.

Melbourne's last high profile leader did wonders for them until he died and they had to stop exploiting him. Gary Lyon has a high profile, he's the next figurehead they can use.

Not sure what everyones problem with Gary Lyon is. He has stated time and time again he isnt interested in coaching. He helps out when they ask him to, and he obviously cares about the club, but has media commitments.

Maybe he thinks he would be a horrible coach. Maybe he gets paid more doing media stuff then he would ever as a coach, with less stress. I just dont understand why he gets constantly looked at whenever a Melbourne issue comes up, as if its his obligation to do something, as if he can wave a magic wand and everything will be grand. There are plenty of champions out there who have nothing or very little to do with their old club, so why is Lyon the bad guy?

Helping to find a new coach at this point is obviously far different than becoming that new coach or the club President.
You misunderstand me. He was a key figure in appointing both Bailey and Neeld. Yet has lurked in the shadows ever since. You can't be both.

Why would he risk his future earnings in the media by getting caught up with Melbourne 100% ?

There are guys such as Buckley & Hird who put their gonads on the line and it is no surprise they come from club's with successful cultures.

There are guys such as Lyon who come from beige clubs such as Melbourne who put self interest ahead of their football club.

This is why they are in the 'shit' they are.

Why shouldnt he put self interest ahead of his club though? He has a family, he obviously enjoys the media, I dont understand this whole idea that football clubs are always first. Shouldnt his family be first? I wonder how much coaches spend with their family on weekends. Or at all. Its a highly demanding stressful job, I dont blame him for not wanting it.

Also known as 'Dermott Brereton' syndrome.

Bigfooty: Gary Lyon does nothing!!

MFC: come help us pick a new coach
Lyon: Nah, its all good
MFC: aww carn. We are begging
Lyon: Okay sure I guess.

Bigfooty: Gary Lyon doesnt do enough!

Is that you, Gary?

Seriously, Lyon is the sort of guy who would infuriate me if I supported Melbourne. He's in one minute, out the next. He's bagging them out, but then goes on to say he can't help them. The sickening thing is that he's got an exceptional football brain and would be a far better coach that what most would think. But no, Gary's too wonderful to be associated with the current train wreck. He can't take time out of his busy schedule of working 6 hours a week on TV to help the club that made him what he is.

I never said that he does nothing?

Its time for him to stop pretending that he does nothing.

Poor old Gaz, he just happens to love the team that he once played for and gets crucified for it. He doesn't put his hand up to coach Melbourne or be their president because maybe he thinks that he is not suited to either of those jobs. Schwab however, is a totally different person. How that slimy little weasel has not been found out is a miracle.
