I have heard that Gary Rohan is suffering from an ongoing problem of nerve damage as a result of the broken leg, and no-one is sure if or when he will be right. It would be a terrible shame if this brought the kid down. When I think of what has happened to him and AJ in the last couple of years, it makes me think of what these young men go through to kick a ball around for our enjoyment.

I guess if rumours are allowed on here yours is as good as anyones, may I ask where or what kind of source you heard this from?

Im no expert but would 'nerve' damage allow him to run freely from the start? He seems to be fine for a while.

Once he gets the rod/screws out at years end , it will 10 times better as soon as he leaves hospital he will notice the difference.
Think he will be fine but this year he might struggle a little until its out.
He has been playing in defence the last couple of weeks in the 2s so maybe they are looking to turn/develop him into a defender which is exciting for the future as him Rampe , AJ are all very versatile with there height and all 3 are extremely quick and it would be hard stopping there run and carry out of defence.

Perhaps there's a case for taking it out now, if it will continue to hamper him to the extent that he can't produce consistantly strong performances? What's the recovery time for that type of thing?

6-8 weeks it took me to be 100% once mine taking out and the Doc normally wants them in for 2 years before they come out

He will come right , he has still got his pace , and looks to be suffering confidence wise. Obviously it is still very sore, but he still does have a steel rod in his leg, once he gets that out he will really start to recover

It's probably a case of, let him develop for a while, and then pull the pin towards the end of the year so he can recover in time to hit the pre-season full pace.

If injuries mount, we may elect to postpone the removal and have him come into the seniors if required. Don't think it'll get to that point, but I think they may be hedging their bets with him.

I had a friend who had a steel rod in her lower leg. Gave her all sorts of trouble even after the leg had healed. She got it out and improved immensely. Has never looked back. Just saying.

Excuse the intrusion, but coming from a sports med background there is possibly truth in both of these statements.

I haven't worked with Gary (but other high profile athletes with similar concerns) and have seen cases where it has been an ongoing issue, but also cases where the removal has meant huge improvements in output.

Is that vague enough?

I guess the bottom line is the medical staff would be looking very closely at whether there is nerve damage that can't be reversed, or whether there is a good result at the end.

Either way, he is a great talent, and hopefully a young kid like him can be back to his dream fulfilling best.

I remember what happened to Jamie Lawson all too well - I was at the game where he broke his leg - and really hope that Rohan doesn't have similar long-term problems.

Article in his local paper ( The Standard Cobden ) sorry don't know how to link.
Said he had trouble with his leg early on and couldn't run out games that's why he was sent back to the 2s to get fitness etc.
Has not felt any discomfort in his leg for a while and his fitness is much better and has been playing well in the 2s
Was close to playing last week against the Bombers and said he is getting closer ( hoping to play against the Cats ).
Liking his new role of HB

I'd really like to see a game where Rohan gets around 15 disposals and kicks 2+ goals. He barely seems to touch the ball but we know he's better than that.

Been playing in defence the last 4 weeks in a new role , so don't know if he will be hitting the score board to much

he was just starting to build so nicely pre injury, i think we all can see what he can do if he just gets confidence and consistency in fitness and game time.

Look awesome in the NAB. The last couple of 2s games I seen he has looked much better of HB than HF ( defending really well ) so lets just hope the leg continues to get better and when form warrants it he gets another crack in the 1s.

Great news.

Is there a space in defence? I wouldn't want any of Malceski, Rampe or Shaw removed at this stage. Surely has a better chance of displacing one of the many running mid/forwards

Thought about that myself a few weeks back. It's probably too hard to put him in the team as just a dedicated Winger/Flanker. I was thinking they should groom him to be a long-term Shaw replacement, in the same way that the Swans look like they might be grooming Reid to be Richards's replacement.
