Last year’s team v. Bris had Ziebell, Cunnington, Goldstein, Howe, and Turner. We were no good today but at least we were no good with a young team who can hopefully learn what the standard is and exceed that standard to win.

Our senior players are absolute tripe. CZ, Lmac, Jy, Tucker just awful.

Positives -

  • Comben
  • Comben is back
  • Comben didn't get injured
  • Comben can play next week

Also -
  • Greenwood
  • Corr looked like a normal defender for five minutes during trash time. I shall forever cherish them.
  • Warlord - down on the stats but still our greatest battler.
  • The toughest start to a fixture we've had for a minute and we are almost through it.

Negatives

I just can't. Ok...sigh:-

  • our bottom six are meant to be our top 6. That is such a gut punch.
  • Stephens, Stephenson, MacDonald, Tucker - time for a long rest.
  • Simpkin - what is going on. Benefit of the doubt but come on.
  • Larkey desperately needs a chop out and it's not going to come any time soon. If he goes down we could be looking at our worst season yet. Why the frick did Clarko put him in the ruck.
  • Zuhaar - gone from my favourite player to probably my least. Who TF does he think he is to 'hold off talks' and play the worst footy of his career?

But really it's our players in their mid twenties collectively that are meant to be in their prime and they're just giving us nothing. What do they need to play to the maximum of their limited abilities? Maybe it's because they feel safe but honestly another game like this and screw the match day result, we need to give them a spell.

I expected to see improvement this year, not necessarily wins.

After 4 games we are no better off than we were last year.

Today was arguably a sign we are worse.
Look I’m as frustrated as anyone else but we have played 3 of the top 4 Freo on their way up and g bong next week at GBH stadium, after that we start playing teams where we will be more competitive. But that depends on the mental toughness of our group, if they can learn from the top teams we will be ok for the rest of the season if they put the tail between the legs we’re knackered until next year. Pretty sure we’ve got 18 more games to go so I m not sooking it up just yet 😎

Our 26-30+ year olds would be the worst group to collectively take the field for any side in league history.

McDonald, Corr, Tucker, Simpkin, Greenwood.

It’s a ******* warzone.
Yep, and 2 of them a co-captains [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Does it actually get any worse?

We screamed into the void (twitter) so hard that north fans have made it to an article on news.com.au for calling out the clubs shit efforts

It's frustrating not to see more signs of improvement as a team, but from an individual point of view, we're starting to put all of the pieces together.

Kallan Dawson, Tristan Xerri, Tom Powell, Colby McKercher, Charlie Comben, and Zane Duursma are all developing as important parts of this rebuild. Those six names weren't in our best side for most of last year, but now look like exciting parts of our future. When you consider that Zac Fisher looks at least serviceable, that's a third of the side turned over in one year. If you wanted to, you could also throw in George Wardlaw, who only had a brief cameo last year.

By the end of the year, hopefully we're adding names like Tyler Sellers, Finnbar Maley, Riley Hardeman, Cooper Harvey, Brayden George, Miller Bergman, and Eddie Ford to that list.

Are these players going to make us a top 2/4 team though or merely bring us back to parity with the rest of the comp? Based on the amount of talent it should be the former but there's no guarantee it's not the latter, and **** me if we have put up with all of this shit for years only to peak again as a middling team...

I would honestly do anything to be a middling team again

Just saw the score now. I decided to enjoy my Friday night this week and I feel a lot better mentally for it.
We are a joke of a team. Over a year since our last actual win and no don't include that round 24 tankathon vs the GC.

Just watched the first half cos l missed whilst still working and Dermott's commentary was just about spot on...missed marks and handballs intercepted, overuse of handballs when we look to be out were all very costly not to mention some of the entries into attack.

Dump kicks from defense and into the forward line was all too common.

McKercher at the coalface doesn't belong there yet and would be better served playing on the outside and being an outlet player where his pace/break away speed is insane.

Georgie needs to keep his feet a bit more, love his endeavor and attack but he almost wants to bury every player into the ground - love it.

Forwards need to demand it more and lead and lead all round the ground just to get their hands and confidence on the ball rather than these static jumping.
The midfielders need more accountable as these dump kick forward is starting to creep back in especially out the clearance and just boot it long forward, too predictable and we don't have players at the fall of the ball as 90% it's spolied sideways and we seem to have no players in those areas.

Brisbane are a bloody good side, the way they leave the space from around true CHF to lead is great. They block players really well, they spread really well, two of their backs camp just on the 50 when there is a stoppage in their forward area as they know we over commit players to the contest.

This over committing of players at the contested ball is really killing us which is why Brisbane or Carlton or Freo in that 3rd quarter, look to be everywhere.

Overall, we don't need to delist half the list or sack the coach or drop 1/2 the side...composure, skills and defensive position/discipline with and without the ball needs to worked on and worked on and worked on.

It wasn't leadership that cos us this game or the usual suspects of the North BFF whipping boys but just poor execution of skills from just about every player.

Bed time..

Something to mention in terms of the senior players’ leadership (or lack thereof) is listening to the last quarter on the wireless (MMM) you could clearly hear the Bears players absolutely screaming instructions to the guys on the ground about positioning etc. Hard to picture any of our guys doing that. Maybe Larkey and 19y.o Sheezel.

My impression is that teams with good mature midfields relish the opportunity to play against us. They know that they'll get a challenge but also believe they can get us with strength and endurance if required. Often when great teams play weaker teams, they can come down to the level of the opposition somewhat. I haven't seen that happen with us this year. Pressure and intensity, particular from Carlton and Bris today (up to half time) was really high! I think if good midfields enjoy the challenge of playing against us, it really is a positive, despite the results. A big negative, on the other hand, is the apparent hit we have taken to our confidence each week we lose the midfield battle. We seem to be getting less resilient with each pounding. It's not what you want to see.

Hope we see a team come out next week relaxed and ready to play with flair and gumption - as we saw in the first 30 mins against Freo. It's the only way we'll get a rewarding outcome (win or otherwise).

Not if its been covered, but the WTF was with so many of our players slipping. Brisbane didnt have any trouble. Too many made the wrong call of the spikes?

The ground doesn’t cause you to miss easy targets by hand and foot.

Yes it’s a s**t ground, but we would have received the same kind of spanking on any AFL ground playing the putrid s**t we dished up.
You've got less room to widen the ground and run. Out guys are younger and less developed, we need the space at this stage. Of course im not saying the result wouldve been different, it just didnt help is all.

It didn’t help. But the ground was the least of our concerns today.

We were pretty much non-competitive in the first half and that wasn’t the grounds fault.

Im sick of giving them an out for just plain shit weak assed pathetic efforts.
