FURTHER LIST CHANGES FOR CATS

Geelong has announced the delistings of several players in a bid to free up the salary cap and make way for some possible additions in the upcoming draft. Fringe players James Davies, Daniel Foster, and Kayne Pettifer were told of their fate yesterday morning, whilst the Cats also announced the release of young rookie Dale Ellis.
The move to delist key position player Foster might end up proving unpopular, given the Cat's lack of depth down back. The fellow delisting of underachieving pair Davies and Pettifer came as no surprise. Emerging key forward prospect Ellis was believed to have been cut off due to excess of rookie players.

King to lead the Cats

There’s been an overhaul of all leadership positions at Geelong with Steven King to yet again captain the Cats in 2004 despite ongoing achilles problems.

King, the side’s premier ruckman, All-Australian and dual best and fairest winner, will be supported by champion All-Australian veteran midfielder Scott West in the vice-captaincy post, with the two deputy vice captain positions going to All-Australian defender Rohan Smith and veteran sweeper Brenton Sanderson.

“To captain a side is a tremendous honour and I’m looking forward to the challenge again,” King said.

King is the league’s youngest captain with West Coast’s Ben Cousins being sixth months his senior.

Champion midfielder Scott West has filled numerous leadership positions before, and says this time is no different.

“I think they made the right choice in choosing Kingy as captain again. It really is the best result for this whole footy club,” West said.

“I know exactly what Steven is going to go through, and I'm sure me, Rohan (Smith) and Brenton (Sanderson), can help him enormously. There's all this talk about him missing big lengths of the season because of his achilles but even so he’ll still be a leader around this footy club.”

Brownless on board

The Geelong Football Club has appointed media personality and former champion forward Billy Brownless to its Board of Directors.

Newly re-elected Geelong president Frank Costa welcomed Brownless to the club’s board, saying his appointment 'enhances' the quality of the club’s board.

“Billy certainly has a passion for Geelong like very few people and his appointment further strengthens the 'quality' of our board,” Costa said.

“Billy’s appointment to the board comes at a time when nearly half of the AFL’s revenue comes from media rights. Billy's knowledge and skills in this area will particularly assist the board and the club in its future planning in this area. I know I speak for all board members when I say we are thrilled to have Billy back at the club.”

“Geelong is a football club with a great history and a brilliant future,” Brownless said.

“Franky and his blokes have done an outstanding job in rebuilding the club in its finances seeing how pathetic it was before and establishing a coaching group and player list that is without a doubt second to none.

“I reckon the club is fair dinkum prepared to take the next step towards success. I've commited myself to help achieve that aim.

“It's an absolute spanking honour to serve the club again.”

YOUNGSTERS IMPRESS IN INTRA-CLUB

After their disappointing loss to Port Adelaide in the opening round of the Wizard Cup, Geelong held a gruelling and intense intra-club match. The match was played under scorching temperatures and was believed to have taken place to "show players what happens when they drop off their game in the dying moments of a match". Players not selected in the opening round were trialled extensively in the intra-club match and it's the youngsters that are pleasing the coaching staff the most.
Young rookie midfielder Adam Bentick shone in the close match, finishing with a game high 18 possessions, 4 tackles and 4 outstanding goals.
"Adam, we thought, played really good honest footy. He really dug into the packs and came out with the footy on most occassions. We were most impressed with his work around the grounds and he's really putting himself in a good position to play in the next practice match", quoted assistant coach Daryn Cresswell.
Along with Bentick, other youngsters Josh Willoughby (10 disposals), Tom Lonergan (10 disposals, 7 marks, 4 goals 3 behinds), Alex Gilmour (4 goals), Brett Peake (13 disposals), and Mark Blake (13 disposals, 9 marks) also impressed coaching staff with their performences and are each under serious consideration for the upcoming practice matches.
As for the experienced performers, key forwards Alastair Lynch ( 7 marks, 4 goals 3 behinds), Cameron Mooney (16 disposals, 7 marks) gave some presence in the forward arc whilst veteran campaigner Scott West contributed well again with 14 disposals from limited game time.

CATS KING-HIT

Geelong skipper will miss up to 10 weeks after undergoing surgery on his troublesome achilles. The operation was to remove floating scar tissue and will sideline the ruckman for the start of the season. The injury will place added responsibility on champion Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes to carry the depleted ruck stocks with inexperienced pair Mark Blake and Paul Chambers.

CATS OPT FOR YOUNGSTERS IN PRACTICE MATCH

Geelong, after bowing out of the Wizard Cup in the first round, has announced their team to play in the forthcoming practice match. Selecters opted to rest veterens Ben Graham, Anthony Koutoufides, Alastair Lynch, Peter Riccardi, Scott Camporeale, Brenton Sanderson, Scott West, Rohan Smith and Michael O'Loughlin for the match and will instead reward youngsters with a spot on the team. After impressing in the pre-season as well as the intra-club match, youngsters Adam Bentick, Shannon Byrnes, Mark Blake, Tom Lonergan, David Mundy, Josh Willoughby, and Brad Symes will line-up for the senior side.

McMAHON A CAT

Geelong has chosen 2000 first round draftee Jordan McMahon with its 1st round pick in the pre-season top-up draft. There is no question about the talent of the quick South Australian on-baller. McMahon has always been considered a gifted midfielder with exquisite skills and also has the ability to drift forward on the flank. The classy player originally came across from SANFL club Glenelg with the reputation for being quick, and he is sure to excite Cat fans with his pace. At his best, he can be a prolific ball gatherer. Although he lacks the physical strength to compete with most on-ball opponents he can be damaging and most effective when afforded open space. He is said to be an important player in the long-term future of the club.

CATS MAUL KANGAS IN PRACTICE MATCH

Geelong has posted an impressive 32 point victory over the Kangaroos in their practice match hit out. The Cat's lead for a large majority of the match and what is even more impressive is the fact that they won with their 'second-tier' team, which consisted of inexperienced youngsters after selectors opted to rest the team's veteren star players. With the side's key player's rested, acting skipper Adam Goodes was expected to lead from the front, and that's exactly what he did. Finishing with an impressive 15 disposals, 7 marks, and 3 goals, the reigning Brownlow Medallist dominated play from centre half forward.
"I was happy with the way the boys played today, and obviously that helped me alot in my own game. Our onballer's, I thought, were delivering the ball quick and low into our forward line; and me, Tom (Lonergan), and (Stephen) Milney really benefited from that", quipped Goodes.
For the second week in a row, young midfielder Adam Bentick controlled play from the middle, finishing with 18 disposals and 1 goal. Bentick's hard work and persistence to win the hard ball was a feature of his game, and no doubt had the coaching staff impressed.
"Adam played some really good footy today and he's done himself no harm in his chances to be elevated from the rookie list", quoted midfield assistant coach Darryn Cresswell.
Other players to stand out from yesterday's match included the likes of Robbie Copeland (16 disposals, 8 marks), first-year draftee Josh Willoughby (14 disposals, 6 marks), newcomer Jordan McMahon (14 disposals, 5 marks, 1 behind), Daniel Pratt (15 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal), Paul Chapman (2 goals), Stephen Milne (2 goals), emerging tall Tom Lonergan (10 disposals, 7 marks, 3 goals 3 behinds), Mark McGough (10 disposals, 1 goal), and emerging young ruckman Mark Blake (12 disposals, 1 goal, 15 hitouts).
The Cat's would be very pleased with the way their youngsters are playing at the moment, especially their first-year draftees in Adam Bentick, Josh Willoughby, and Mark Blake; and their 2nd year players in Tom Lonergan and Shannon Byrnes.

Geelong will square off against Brisbane in an exhibition game due to begin shortly. The Cat's have included youngsters Adam Bentick, Shannon Byrnes, and Tom Lonergan in the side.

CATS THRASH BEARS

In an overwhelming display of power, Geelong comprehensively accounted for Brisbane in a very one-sided exhibition match. The Cat's, victors by a whopping 103 points, put on an impressive display as they looked to dominate from the opening bounce.
Geelong's youngsters again proved to be the difference with outstanding displays from Brent Moloney (25 disposals, 12 marks, 1 goal), Tom Lonergan (14 disposals, 6 marks, 10 goals), Josh Willoughby (18 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal), Shannon Byrnes (17 disposals, 4 tackles, 3 goals), and Adam Bentick (19 disposals, 1 goal). These key 5, along with veteran Scott West (21 disposals, 3 goals), reigning Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes (24 hitouts, 1 goal), and impressive newcomer Jordan McMahon (19 disposals, 1 goal), proved to be the matchwinners around the grounds.
Exciting key-position prospect Lonergan was an awesome force up forward, continuouslly leading strongly and hauling in big marks. He rewarded Cat's officials with a career high 10 goals. Young rookies Shannon Byrnes and Adam Bentick also impressed yet again with dominating displays in the centre of the ground. Bentick, who has found himself consistently being among the Cat's best this pre-season, rumaged around the bottom of packs and picked up a handy 19 disposals along the way. Shannon Byrnes has also continued his impressive displays, using his exciting pace and agility to constantly dodge and weave himself out of tight situations. The exciting rookie finished with 17 disposals and drifted up forward to kick 3 excellent crumbing goals from the forward pocket.
The Cat's first pick in the 2003 national draft, Josh Willoughby, also impressed coaching staff with a good display from the wing, picking up 18 disposals and kicking a beautiful running goal from just outside fifty during the 3rd quarter. He is expected to figure prominantly during the season.
Another youngster, Brent Moloney, destroyed Brisbane with his running of the lines and long kicking, picking up a game-high 25 disposals, grabbing 12 marks and slamming home a goal to finish with a BOG performence.
The Cat's will continue to play their youngsters in upcoming exhibition practice matches as they seek to prepare for the upcoming season.

BYRNES UPGRADED

Geelong has promoted exciting young rookie Shannon Byrnes to the senior list to reward the rover for his scintillating form on the track over the summer and after promising displays in the Wizard Cup series and subsequent practice and exhibition matches.

The talented midfielder/small forward was maintained on the club’s rookie list from last year and at 174 centimetres, he is the smallest player at Geelong but has unquestioned ability, finishing third in the club’s VFL best and fairest last year behind fellow rookie Andrew Carrazzo and young father-son pick-up Tim Callan.

Byrnes, 19, received the good news after training on Friday that he will be a senior player for at least the next eight weeks while injured skipper Steven King does his time on the long-term injury list.

"He's very exciting,'' CEO Brian Cook said of the former Murray Bushranger.

Byrnes, in his second year as a rookie, was still coming to terms with his elevation after taking the long road to making the senior list.

He said he came close to being promoted last season, but a shoulder injury put paid to his aspirations.

"I've done it the hard way (getting on the senior list), but it's definitely worth it,'' he said after Saturday's game.

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, being at an AFL club I'm happy to be here.''

Assistant coach Daryn Cresswell said Byrnes was a good chance of playing and likened him to Sydney goalsneak Adam Schneider. Schneider is another left-footer who burst on to the scene last year, playing every game and booting 30 goals.

"Shannon has shown a lot of promise and done everything right over pre-season."

"He reminds me a bit of Adam Schneider, a good goalsneak, left-footer, got good goal sense, just knows where to go to get the footy and I think he could be pretty handy for us this year. Hopefully he'll get the opportunity to play regular footy and prove himself, he's a pretty exciting player.''

PRESS RELEASE:

Geelong has continued its busy pre-season schedule announcing an exhibition match against the newly-coached Essendon. Details will be released once the club has confirmation from the AFL.

CATS PICK SEWELL

Geelong has chosen emerging midfielder Brad Sewell, previously from the Hawks, with its 2nd pick in the top-up draft (No.14 overall). The rookie enjoyed an excellent debut season at VFL level last year, with Hawks not hesitating to elevate him to the senior list at season’s end.
Sewell, a strong, aggressive and deceptively quick midfielder, played predominantly as a midfielder for Box Hill, claiming some big scalps and ending on top of key stats’ categories. He has a mature body, is fast and works well in the centre square set-ups. He also finished second in Box Hill’s best and fairest and is expected to push for senior selection this season.
Sewell was hampered with the scourge of the modern footballer - osteitis pubis - for much of his all important final year in the TAC Cup. He made the Vic Country squad for the AFL Under 18 National Championships, although didn’t get that much ground time. Sewell was awarded best on ground in the VFL Preliminary Final against Sandringham in 2003 after accumulating 33 possessions and setting up Box Hill’s second Grand Final appearance in three years. Sewell’s super athleticism through the midfield for Box Hill saw his coach Tony Liberatore keep him in that position, despite the Hawthorn senior players coming into the team over the course of the season.
The Cat’s are said to be delighted with the newest addition, as they seek to inject some much needed speed into their midfield, of which the likes of Jordan McMahon and Sewell are projected to do.

CATS LOSE IN EXHIBITION MATCH

Geelong has fallen galantly to a Essendon side lead by skipper James Hird in an exhibition match. The Cat's fell short by 25 points after leading earlier in the match. Geelong was unable to stop the Dons with Hird's 7 goals, and Jason Johnson's 20 disposal games proving too much.

On a good note for the Cat's, vice-captain Scott West put in a dominant display in the centre, racking up 20 possessions and kicking a goal. Other Cat's that performed well included Jordan McMahon (17 disposals, 1 goal), Adam Goodes (18 hit outs, 11 disposals, 2 goals 2 behinds), and Alaistair Lynch (10 marks, 5 goals).

Youngsters Tom Lonergan and newly-promoted Shannon Byrnes also performed well. Lonergan racked up 14 disposals, hauled in 7 marks, and kicked 2 goals from centre half forward whilst Byrnes collected 15 disposals and kicked 1 goal alternating as a rover and forward crumber.

Geelong will likely take a breather before hitting out again in an intra-club match later in the week.
