Don't think the lights went out, but was definitely groggy. Managed to get himself off the ground which was good. But given it's only 4 days I'd say there's zero chance he plays just to be sure.
And we may never see him again.

Do we have anyone that we can replace Kolo with?

A witches hat.

I’ve had enough of Kolodjashnij

Does not do much, never creates or hurts the opposition and doesn’t do anything miraculous defensively.

A nothing player that is better served with developing a youngster or trying something different to benefit the team in the short, med or long term

On a positive note, Close actually impressed me more tonight than he did on debut last week, even though the hype was bigger against Freo. Thought he did a few clever things tonight.
Yes I thought close was over rated last week.

But there was a couple of times tonight where it was hot. And he didn't just give it off. He gave bullet handballs over say 5m.

I've always loved spread when it comes to handball.

But he did kick a ball to Hawkins late that was way too hot.
Needed to weight it..

Can't can't help but think Guthrie playing on and getting caught was a major turning point in the game. Little things like that and others cost us the win.
Yeah, and things like Sav missing directly in front. A few crucial moments where players blew chances. WCE didn't blow their chances. That was the difference. We panicked when the pressure was on and did stupid things. Wasn't just the kids but the experienced players who we've come to expect that sort of thing from.

Fact is, if you have one of these variables change:

Selwood plays
Ablett plays
Game is played on neutral territory

Geelong probably win, so I don’t think Geelong should be too depressed by tonight.
The Eagles are a great side and might be even better in a month but the season is not lost if they are yard stick.
Not sure we probably win as they were all over us in the second half. They have players like McGovern coming back as well.

We definitely played ok and we are not out of it (this season) by a long shot. We know we can beat them if we have things go our way.

BUT Surely the blueprint of how we lose big games is a worry. If I open the paper the day after a loss I could almost tell you the 5 point check list. We ticked them all tonight. Are you seeing progress?

Agreed. Dangers miss, savs miss, blicavs ballerina turnover also key moments.

Enough of those moments go against you in a close game and you can see why we lost.

I think that's the most positive thing I've seen you post ever. I like it :)

what did people think of hendos game? I thought he was pretty solid. Wouod much rather him down in defence then kolo.

He was good but he's not the future, and anyway Kolo is pretty miserly when he's in form. The issue to me with our defense isn't so much about individuals, it's more about collective balance. There's one too many of the same type.

I think the criticism of Sav is a bit over the top. He was very good in the ruck early. He, like the rest of our side, just spent his petrol tickets early.

In terms of players that were true liabilities out there I didn't think we had too many that were clearly below expectations.

Some that played well i think were Duncan, Guthrie, Menegola, Tuohy, O'Connor, Stewart

Both Sav and Blitz were good early trying to get over NicNat through sheer leap and workrate. Once they were gassed though they lost that impact. Savs miss was quite visible to many but just as visible should have beem Blitz rucking against NicNat late, ignoring the actual ruck contest to just lightly shove NicNat who palmed the perfect tap to Kennedy for the snap goal that sealed it. Sav/Blitz is the dialysis to the Fort/Stanley kidney transplant. Gut feel here is that Sav pulls up sore on the short turn around either Stanley is good to go or Kreuger debuts as a forced selection.

Constable is a kid I have liked and wanted to be in the side but I found him frustrating tonight. Started out in what looked like a tagging role but didn't have the acceleration so was ineffective. Once he got pinged for holding on once or twice that was the end of that. His chop out in defence where he was clearly outmarked by a bloke 3 inches shorter shows how resting players in roles they can't play hurts the side. I don't see how he'd be any better off resting forward. Around the ground a couple of handballs to no where and 4 marks 5 kicks as a ratio gives you an indication of where he got his kicks. I think with his inability to pressure a ball carrier more than step or two away would have seen him out of the side if he wasn't out with concussion. Selwood in for him is a no brainer.

Fogarty as well is one I have defended but he was invisible tonight. Against Freo he was passable and he warranted a pass given it was his first back in a while and the conditions weren't amenable to showcasing talent. No matter how you cut it though 5 disposals in a match where the side had 280 says something isn't clicking. I think the thing that isn't clicking here though is obviously that he's a mid being deployed as a pressure forward. I feel like he would have added more as a tagger than constable would have early and if he's in the side that's where I want to see him. I was of the opinion he couldn't add less than Jack Steven, but I'm starting to reconsider there. Considering he is playing forward and cocky has had a couple of scratch matches now I'd consider making that switch.

The only other one I can think of is that they might consider bringing in Stephens for a debut in place of Simpson. Muay Thai goals notwithstanding, Simpson I didn't feel added a heap and this was his third game in a row of 12 or fewer possessions across 3 very different games. Not the end of the world to give him one more shot at recreating the Lions match but I don't think I would given that the story of tonight was basically running hard early to cover holes then running out of gas. Strategy needs to be to have fewer holes.

Best:
3 Menegola
2 Duncan
1 Guthrie

Outs:
Constable (inj)
Sav (inj/sore)
Fogarty
Simpson

Ins:
Selwood
Kreuger*
Cocky
Stephens*

Kreuger could be Stanley, Stephens would be my preference but also would be amenable to Steven, Evans or even Jarvis to have a crack

I can't help but feel that the short turn around between games had a huge effect on our fade out. By end of the game Blicavs and Sav we're barely wrestling with Naitianui, they seemed absolutely spent. My only criticism of their ruck efforts that neither of them really went on the attack when Allen and Darling were in the ruck. We need to find a way to rotate our smaller forwards into the midfield just to give the some touch, they must be so cold when they finally touch the ball. Our midfield group as a whole need to be better at causing secondary stoppages, too often WCE got a clearance after it pin-balled out of congestion.

Game plan was it was as good as we could have asked for and for the most part it was executed extremely well. Selection-wise I can't help but feel it would have been beneficial to have some fresh player come into the team. Hawkins is definitely carrying a calf issue. I hope the give him a week off, he too important to risk.

They're asking a lot of Sav given his low Football IQ, they need to simplify his role, he should be banned from short kicks and possibly handballs towards to centre of the ground. For now I'd be happy for him just to bomb it down the line. He'll get there.

Since when? I thought he was amazingly versatile?

He got manhandled effortlessly by Natanui and then got outmarked far too easily by Kennedy. That's a fail in both spots.

He panics under pressure. That goal to Darling was a direct result of his horrible panicked kick off the left foot (it's somewhat of a trademark).
Yep soon as Blits has time to think you just know what's coming.

We have goldstein next week. If we dont have stanley next week then we need sav. Cant have blicavs as sole ruck againdt goldstein. do people not remember the massacres goodstein has given blicavs in the ruck in multiple finals?

Rest of post was quite good.

Not sure about Fogarty. Pretty limited. Still young but think Wells stuffed that first pick. Again.

Disappointing night, just didn't get involved.
Too old to be babysat.
I always thought he was a bit of a 'reach' draft wise, but I've been prepared to back him in and hope for the best; his tackling game has looked promising and that's a good building block, but after a decent return last week he was really passive tonight; barely sighted for large stretches.
Still needs a lot of physical development before he'll be able to have much impact it'd seem; he should be looking at a bloke like Miers and thinking 'I want his spot' but he just doesn't have the running capacity to play the way he wants to.
