Fair enough. I take it more literally that opposition fans were happy to mock and patronise us during the premiership drought, but strangely enough didn't like it when we started doing better - or much worse - actually started winning things. Could apply it to plenty more clubs as well.

Whereas compared to Geelong's similar drought, Geelong still consistently played in finals and were genuine flag threats in many of those years, falling short for various reasons.

The flags they won prior to 2017 I wasn’t even alive so those flags don’t register in my psyche.
From saving up enough pocket money to buy toys and video games at the local second-hand shop, all I remember in the 90s about the Tiggers were discarded, forlorn (often old and tattered) Richmond guernseys at the back of the shop.

It would take a lot more than a couple of gifted flags from shameless tanking for years to ever change that perception of the Tiggers for me. They were on their way but they fumbled it and have reverted to how I have always perceived them as.

It’s obvious you must be fairly young, otherwise you would know that Geelong in fact didn’t make the finals consistently during their drought. In the 70s it was only twice and the 80s three times. That’s five times in a 20 year period. Wouldn’t call that consistently.

My bad, the reference to the past it sounded like some justification for it being used today when it has been irrelevant since around the late 70s and early 80s. From the late 80s onwards, Geelong has been a consistent finals side and that's around the time I became aware of sports in general and picked clubs to support.

You do realise that there’s a couple of Richmond fans on the main board that spend hours and hours hanging crap on Geelong on a number of different threads. I wish Geelong supporters wouldn’t entertain their tired and boring trollish foolishness but it’s their prerogative how they choose to spend their time posting on BF.

People don't use handbaggers anymore because Geelong have beaten teams over and over and got the job done.
It worked back in the 90's when the Cats couldn't get the job done.

But now they are a massive club with an awesome record, it's not really effective like it used to be.
Same as "Sleepy Hollow"

Used to be a place careers went to die and players couldn't wait to get out of there ASAP.
Now its probably close to the best free agent destination in the comp, its not really applicable anymore.

I was under the impression that trollish nicknames were banned (i.e. Norf, Carltank, Essendope, etc..) on BF besides Bay 13. This rule was introduced years ago so maybe things have changed and mods are more lax and lenient about it now.

IMO handbagger has a sort of derisive sexual minority (gay, bi, etc…) undertones to it, mainly used back in the day to mock a man suspected of being gay/bi for not being a real man because he did not adhere to the stereotype of a straight male by choosing to sport a male handbag or some other attribute considered 'soft' and not manly.

Interestingly enough Don Scott, a former Hawthorn star, used to be a fan of male handbags and I'm reasonably sure he is gay even if he's never officially come out publicly. Don’t really recall a Geelong player ever having those proclivities though.

Surprised no one has kicked up a fuss about its popular use as a term to clearly denigrate someone for being less of a man because they are suspected of not being heterosexual. Similar how the word gay not long ago was used to denote something that was ‘lame’ and that was eventually phased out.

I wasn’t calling anyone gay. Just wondering why one homophobic usage has been more or less gradually phased out and deemed offensive. The example I gave was calling someone or something gay as in insult to mean ‘lame’, something that was fairly common in the 90s and 2000s.

Whereas ‘handbagger’, a term that from what I've read originated in the 60s, if not even earlier, to demean a male by alluding to him being a homosexual and therefore not a ‘real’ man, remains at least in the footy vernacular.

Back in the ‘70s, it was seen as good humour to use imagery that saw the football-playing men — hard, bloodied and ferocious — as women, dressed in skirts, sipping tea and colour co-ordinating their handbags with their cardigans.

And yeah, it still works in the modern day, but you run the risk of the new-age warrior penning a column, blog or Facebook rant about your approach.

Louie handed the Cats that title through their ‘pretty boy’ ways. Think a young Sam Newman, the handball-style that would see them now as revolutionaries or not implementing a game plan through fear of being physically hurt by other men.

They ran the ball and it was pretty to watch. Heck, Polly Farmer could put the ball through a car window from some 30m away — why wouldn’t you exploit that?

But back when the style of play was a ‘kick down the line in the hope of a pack mark’ and avoiding a broken jaw, the handball-style was viewed as bruise-free footy.

Pretty sure that, again from what I’ve heard/read, the term handbagger was also popular in the UK in the 60s so that’s where I suspect Lou got the idea from; it was not a completely original word he made up.
