From the guys at Channel 7 discussing when we could realistically be pushing for another flag tilt.

They are saying 2018 at the earliest if everything goes right

Sorry can't watch that, that Chris Pelchen broke creeps me out the way he talks.

2018 would be about right.Dunno why DQ's are thinking we could've won this year.

I didn't think we could.

But perhaps the reason why some thought we could is that the rhetoric from Chris Scott for years has been that Geelong would be challenging for a flag again in 2015/16.

Kind of funny that your shot at the "DQs" is an inadvertent shot at the coach and his ridiculous claims over the years.

Bews - ??? - ???
Thurlow - ??? - Smedts?
Motlop - Caddy - Duncan
Lang - ??? - Gregson
??? - Hawkins - ???
??? - Selwood - Guthrie

That's a lot of unknowns.

We're going to have to do a dream trade/fa run over the next 2 years to be in with a shot without losing guys like Motlop and Kolo.

Otherwise I think we'll be too lop sided in experience again and still have too many gaps.

As I said, we need strong big bodied mids. Won't be a shot losing clearances, contested possessions and getting bullied off the ball by other midfields in packs.

Never thought we were any serious chance this season. Which is neither an issue nor an outrage. It's the way things go. I would be more than content with good improvement from enough young players. Some have already showed it. But I suspected there would be some quality entertainment during the season and it looks like that's coming true as well.

You know, the "DQs" weren't really the ones thinking we could win it this year. It was actually the perpetually optimistic who thought that would be the case.

Strangely enough, the 'drama' seems to come far more from those who are personally outraged by criticisms of the club. Those who make the criticisms tend to be pretty measured on the whole.

It seems the logic works like this:

1. If you don't predict a flag, and instead opt for somewhere between 5th-10th, you're a 'DQ'.
3. With the club now 6-7-1, and a flag a fantasy and finals no certainty, it is of course the fault of those who were more accurate with their more cautious appraisals.

Makes perfect sense.

I still say 10 years, minimum.
As I said in the pre season.

But seeds will no doubt pull me up again.

You've left Cockatoo feeling depressed. Horlin-Smith also flips the bird.

I dunno but time to play the kids. Cockatoo in for the rest of the year, just start the rebuild, and Chris Scott gets outcoached every single game. Change of tactics and game plan would be nice too.

So many unknowns, it's true. But with any luck I think shedding some of the older players and giving the young'uns ownership of the team would refresh and invigorate the side in the years to come. Less of the "been there done that, and twice again for good measure" lethargy that seems to creep in.

My speculative team for 2017-18 ish.

Bews - Kolo - ?
Thurlow - Haz - Guthrie
Lang - Caddy - Duncan (VC)
Cockatoo - Clark - Jansen
Mots** - Hawk - Gregson
Stanley - Selsy (C) - Blitz

**if he decides to stay.

That's a conservative choice of players too, given I've left out the speculative LTI group (i.e. the rest of the '09 draft).

I think we could win a few games with that lot. Just need a back pocket :)

**EDIT**
OMG I missed Murdoch! Doesn't deserve that sort of treatment after tonight! Put him in the interchange with GHS, an oldy (who might still be around?) and Gore.

Yeah, I think so too, unfortunately.

I have my doubts about the current idea of "transitioning" in a bid to turn into another premiership challenger by 2018. I don't think we have the quality of youth to come through to much it with what the best sides at that time will have, and I'm doubtful we'll be able to fill all the holes we already have and will have within the next few years. I think that an attempt to transition in the short-term to try to get flags with the likes of Hawkins and Selwood will fail, and we will wind up further down the ladder, forcing us to actually commit to an actual long-term rebuild.

I have seen nothing to suggest that the players who are currently on our list and who will be here in 2018 will be anywhere remotely near premiership standard.
It should be noted that we are performing poorly at the moment, but nearly all the players who will be aged out of it by 2018 are and have been this season well in the top 50% of our performers.
This, of course, means that we will need significant improvement from the younger players before 2018 just to get back to where we are now.
There is no premiership window for us in 2018 unless and until we obtain some quality players via trading/FA and/or have remarkable success in drafting.

We have to bear in mind how special a group needs to be to win Premierships, and until the last few years and the coming together of close to half the side from the '99 and '01 drafts that hadn't happened in 40 years.

Thinking about the other good eras Geelong had, say '81-82 and the late 80's and early 90's, we had cores of players that had been around for a long time and had developed together (Nankervises, Clarke, J.Hawkins, Turner, Neal, Bright, Malarkey and Blake for the 80 group) and of course Hocking, Brownless, Gary Sr, Bairstow, Stoneham, Couch, Bews and co for the 80's and 90's group. It's almost essential i feel to get a group together than can gel and really drive a side to something special. There may just be a sort of bond or something, but without question the '99 and '01 group gelled to become a side that could play instinctive brilliant footy that can only come with years of playing together and gaining full trust in the system.

Our '09 group was almost that, but it's been decimated and apart from Duncan it's probably ambitious to say Menz, Vardy and Cowan can come back to be the guns we hoped from the start (although Menzel playing a game was awesome news). But the others from the draft era '08 to '13 have been somewhat fragmented with performance, some have come and gone already like 1st rounder Brown, Hartman and Burbury and others like Smedts have had a lot of interruptions, to the extent that in his 5th season we're unclear if he's actually going to make it going forward. GHS has been in and out and needs to really make the rest of this year count, and whilst the newest members like Lang, Gregson and co have been very good, they are only starting out.

At least i feel the decision should be made now though. I feel transitioning at this point is probably not possible, we just have to get in plenty of young players (many of them midfielders) and see how they can develop with the current bones of the side (Selwood, Hawkins, Duncan and Taylor) When you look at those names, it's not many isn't it. We have to get midfield engine power before we can even think of competing for the big Finals again, and maybe by the time Hawkins and Selwood are 30 we may be able to challenge again. But like Fred LeDeux said, there's little of who we have right now who an objective person can see becoming part of an elite group. With depth a side can improve, and players can improve, but to win Flags they have to go from standard level players to something quite special. Groups like we have seen in the last decade don't come around all that often for any club (maybe except the Hawks) and we need to stake stock and appreciate how good the new crew we draft and who we already have need to become to be even a passing imitation of the greats of yore.

lol 2018, our list is rubbish we are no chance for 2018

need a group of 30-35 players to win a flag not just a nice looking best 22

so far we probably have 18 potentially decent players for the future, add 3 good players a year (optimistic) and by 2019 we will have a somewhat decent list

maybe we can push for top 4 around then and that's assuming some of our young mids turn into A graders or elite

personally I think our list management isn't good enough right now and we will likely be stuck going nowhere (4th-13th) like north, richmond, carlton, bombers etc

But Chris Scott told us 2015.

Wrong, Chris Scott never said we would win a premiership in 2015 .

Expecting a coach of a club that has played in more finals series in a row than any other club and won 3 premierships in that time to win a premiership is just stupidity .

Totally false .Let me directly quote Brian Cook

“I just hope that through these minor setbacks and minor hardships that there is a positive reaction from our supporters because it has been a pretty good ride for 10 years.

“It can’t last forever and we know that equalisation does take its toll.”
