Delisted Sydney Swans Jonathon Simpkin will play for Geelong's VFL team this season. Simpkin, an onballer/half forward, hails from Colac & played with the Geelong Falcons. A swan rookie in 2006, he was upgraded to the senior list last year.
The Cats VFL also managed to repel the interstate vultures and re-sign rover Jay Cheep & Chris Urie. They also retained skipper James Byrne, wo in the off-season was regularly linked to Collingwood, due largely to his friendship with Pies VFL boss Paul Licuria.
Matt Firman, Drew Barnes, Ryan Butler & Jack Hollmer are also back.

Some more information...

- The Geelong-Coburg MCG curtain-raiser to the Geelong Vs Richmond round eight match is no longer going ahead. The match will now be played at Skilled Stadium on the same day, but will start at 11am.

- The round round eight match against North Ballarat, originally scheduled for Stawell, will now be played at Austar Arena.

- The practice match against North Ballarat in Ballarat in three weeks could be relocated because of Ballarat's drought.

JONATHAN Simpkin is hoping to follow in the footsteps of a growing number of Geelong VFL players promoted onto senior lists to help re-ignite his AFL career.
The 20-year-old has joined the club's VFL team, which has also signed former Geelong Falcons' big man Sam Stavenuiter and former Cat James Rahilly as assistant coach.
Simpkin, also a former Falcon, was delisted by Sydney at the end of last season after being promoted off their rookie list in 2006.
He found it difficult to break into the side which was gunning for a premiership and left little room for developing youngsters, while the standard of the Sydney reserves _ with regular 20-goal wins _ also wasn't an ideal situation.
``(The delisting) was a little bit of a surprise, but I wasn't too shocked,'' Simpkin said.
He trained with Melbourne in the hope of being picked up in the draft, but said when nothing eventuated, he was happy to return closer to his hometown of Colac and try his luck at Geelong where he will play a midfield-forward role.
``If I work hard this year, I'll put myself in a good position (to be drafted again),'' he said.
``There has been guys who have gone to other clubs so there's a real opportunity for me to play a role in the VFL.''
Coach Leigh Tudor said Simpkin has the talent to give his AFL career to be given another shot.
``He's been fantastic. He hasn't missed a goal at training or in a game, you can see he's just got natural talent,'' he said.

Rahilly, who played 90 games for the Cats between 1998 and 2005 before returning to his hometown of Warrnambool, will have a part-time role with both the VFL and AFL squads.

News of the recruits comes on the back of the re-signings of VFL quartet Jay Cheep, Matthew Firman, Jack Hollmer and Chris Urie.
The VFL team will play a practice match this Saturday against Sandringham.
Meanwhile, its round seven match against Coburg has been moved from the MCG to Skilled Stadium, while its round eight game against North Ballarat will be played at North Ballarat Oval instead of in Stawell.

Wtf? That's half their senior list. Are the half-decent names on there like Thursfield, Connors etc recovering from injury?

Connors is the bloodnut isn't he? Not exactly the most skilled player I've ever seen but towards the end of last year showed a bit of sheer aggression and looked promising.

pretty sure they are i know laidler is emergency and pretty sure bedford is.

the vfl game could be a pumping with only 1 vfl premiership player playing in liam bedford. cheep urie holmer firman and byrne all arent playing dont know why.

saw the tigers vfl list for this week which includes shultz, coughlan, howat, edwards, thursfield, silvester, polo, pattinson, collard, oakley nicholls, matt white, hughes, cartlidge and daniel connors.

A few of those guys lined up last night (JON, Thursfield, Silvester and Connors IIRC) and I'd suggest that if Coughlan plays it'd only be for a few mins at a time. Most of those listed would have slight niggles or perhaps on the comback trail after injury.

Shocking game for us, we just couldn't kick straight.
Mumford did well, and a few others but I had no idea who most of them were!
I have a few videos and photos from it that I'll post later. :thumbsu:
Also, we wore a silver jumper, it looked like our training top.

I was so confused. I couldn't work out who was who and the numbers were all confusing and mixed up. Hmmm VFL side got slaughtered and it was frustrating to watch. I didn't expect the boys to really be great coz half the side was playing in the seniors. I'm not sure what to think about our VFL team this year, I think it might be a struggle of a year (hope I'm wrong... please be wrong!). Who's gonna kick the goals all season to replace Toddy Grima?

Most blokes are playing for their spots therefor all the good players and players from last year were rested so the vfl can finalize its list.

I only got home from Geelong a few hours ago, so settle down, I'm pretty tired and I have school tomorrow!
Photos/videos aren't really my first priority right now. :)
Anyway, because I have a good quality camera, all the videos are really large files (to give you an idea, my smallest video is 12mbs and my upload speed is 55kbs)
I waited almost an hour for a video to upload and it didn't even finish uploading (and I have broadband!)
So one night when I have more time I'll upload the videos.
Here's some pictures (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and I'll resize and post the rest tomorrow or in the next few days.
