Watching the Filth/Norf game today I'm forced to admit that the Filth's best side is pretty damn good already, and only likely to get better.

Their fans - who seem to be appearing and reappearing on this board like herpes - will probably argue with it, but I'll have a dip at their Best 22 below (assuming fitness) and you can judge it for yourselves;

FB: Brown - Frost - Toovey
HB: Varcoe - Reid - Williams
RK: Grundy - Pendlebury - Treloar
CR: Crisp - Swan - Sidebottom
HF: Howe - Cloke - De Goey
FF: Fasolo - Gault - Moore
IC: Greenwood Aish Elliott Adams
Em: Macaffer Cox Goldsack

There's a few others - Marsh, Blair, Langdon, Broomhead, Ramsey, Sinclair, Oxley - who could legitimacy be included; they've a bloody decent list, sadly.

EDIT: HAD to include De Goey, couldn't live with it otherwise.

Thought the same. They're playing a decent brand for this time of year.
Gonna upset a few & would not be surprised if they sneak into the 8 if they can reproduce it in the regular season.

My granddaughter attended Auskick signup and training today and I lined up at 7:30 am to watch. The kids all get a footy and a pump with a valve in their backpack and a few other things as well I think. The coaches run them through a few drills and start them on the journey of learning to kick, handball and catch the ball. It is endearing to watch how awkward they all are at this age and despite most not ending up with a career in footy, they all benefit from the life skills of working together for shared goals or improved hand / eye co-ordination at the very least.

This is a great innovation (Auskick) that integrates our diverse society and brings us a common ground. Walking through the clubhouse, I noticed the trophy cabinet proudly displaying the U17 girls premiership cup and it made me realise just how far we've come in such a short time. My daughter had to stop playing AFL when she was 12 yo as the rule then prevented girls playing in the boys comp after that age and there was no girls comp.

Less than a decade later the girls comp is strong and getting stronger with the advent of the womens' AFL comp about to start up. Logically if there is a womens' comp, there has to be a strong girls' comp to feed it.

Congrats to the unsung heros who have worked behind the scenes to make all this possible :thumbsu:

Taken the Sydney/Geelong route of not completely bottoming out for the better part of a decade to rebuild and contend again.

Calls for finishing down the bottom end for longer and longer so as to stockpile high draft picks has never sat right with me. Who wants to wish prolonged periods of non-success and irrelevance upon your own club? Who's to guarantee the rise back up? Too many recent examples of perennial cellar dwellers.
It's so much more than what number you take your pick. The number in which you draft doesn't always correlate to the order of eventual quality/success. We know this.

I hope to see some real improvement within our team over the next couple of seasons because hey, It's been a while since 2010/11. And 2018 we're supposed to be a top 4 side (according to the plan/road/whathaveyou). Absolutely busting a nut to see our boys go at it again tomorrow. Was mostly happy with our first showing. Now I want to see what we can dish up with a much more experienced side.

But now it looks as if the game could be called off. Just about had it with 'the footy gods', I swear.

Collingwood sneak into the 8? I've got them as a top 4 smokey. Midfield is too good.
I say sneak in coz I'm looking at last year's top 8 and one has to drop out but I am not sure who that will be.
North?...Crows?....Doggies?...heaven forbid the Tigers? Someone has to go down in flames but atm it looks very congested.
Not to mention Port and Cats will be likely pushing for a spot as well.

Adelaide are most likely to miss finals out of last year's finalists for mine. Sydney I reckon are also a smoky to miss out.

A big reason why I was dead keen on Sidebottom wasn't just to improve ours, it was to help dilute theirs!

I think we are also disrespecting their key stocks on this board too, they may still not be as strong or as promising as ours but they don't seems to be gumbys.

But that midfield, DeGoey, Aish, Treloar, Pendles, Sidebottom, Adams, Greenwood, Swan - well, as much as I hate that club - you have to respect that midfield! (Imagine if Beams was still there!).

I rate our kids, but we will need to add a couple of superstars to our midfield to compete with that.

Roughly IMO.

Sydney the big sliders on the back of an indifferent buddy and a one-paced list.

Geelong to have a bit of a false dawn if everyone stays fit, and North and Fremantle to stay up the business end for one more year before the big fall.

Realistically on the above, anyone from Geelong to Melbourne could move all over the place; it's going to be an interesting season.

I'm not sold on Geelong, they have lost Stevie J, Kelly and Stokes.
I know their recruits are better but still a lose of quality players

You're right but not many sides get through with their best possible.
Gee looking at that side it exposes the age of their backline, this has to be the last season with that lineup

True, but Thurlow going down was bad for them - he'd be off half back - and with a more stacked midfield, Guthrie may go back to where he began on a HBF. They need Kolojdashnij to make it or they're very light for KPDs post-Taylor/Lonergan.

Wow, Tigers to miss? That would be an epic meltdown, not to mention the huge spike in microwave sales. :)

Looking forward to the bulldogs vs demoms game. Should be a good measure of what we will be competing with this season

Unfortunately depends where you are as to how womens teams are viewed.

The Sunbury Lions being the case I'm obviously most familiar with, for the past 20 odd years despite the growth and progress made, there's still the undercurrent that the womans side is filled with lesbians, filled with tomboys and all those other arguments to otherwise shout down and slander the team and comp despite a strong showing that locally, the club and anything with the Lions is and needs to be successful in the region. This sentiment, has had and continues to have parents simply not bothering to bring their daughters along to any auskick, because in the end they just get lumped into this by those who would devalue their contribution and their love of the game.

Meanwhile, one would argue that the male sides would have an overinflated ego about themselves.

I can see improvements at a higher level, but locally I still see that it hasn't quite filtered through here yet, which whilst sad also shows that it may be generational change in some regions before this actually sticks.
