You have a serious misunderstanding of addiction if you think people are just looking for something to be addicted to
No, I think you misinterpreted my post there.

Generalising, I know, but pokies aren't played by high rollers. They're played by people who don't have much of a life or much money, and spend their evenings feeding 50s into a flashy machine - held by the belief that 'things will turn soon'. People burn through hundreds of dollars in a night on the pokies. Its just not equitable on a financial scale to beers or fast food. If we were making money through coke dealing I might understand the equivalence; but the margin on pokies is huge.

Over 1,000,000 Australian kids are going without the care (food, school books, clothes etc) that they need to thrive. Its not fair that a kid should be born to parents on benefits, if those parents are going to spend their cash on the pokies. $100 can feed a family of three for a week, or it can be spent on the pokies in an hour.

Its an absolute scourge, and thank goodness the club is pulling out.

Yeah no one is going to the pokies for a social drink with friends etc. They’re going there alone driven by desperation thinking it’s going to turn their life around. Not a legitimate source of entertainment, literally nothing to be gained

Unless you're a multinational who is plundering profits from them. They're the definition of antisocial, and I don't get why people defend them. Its not as if the money is going back into the public purse. Yes, people can spend their money however they like. But the manufacturers spend a fair amount of cash making them appealing, and that attraction is something a lot of people can't help giving into.

The only legit use of pokies is emptying your $2 coins on a Thursday night at the McKinnon Keno after a couple of Furphs imo

[QUOTE="Djcjdees, post: 54970767, member: 98126" Is junk food next? Alcohol? Ciggies? Sugar? Arguably taking stances against any of those would be more socially responsible than a stance against pokies.[/QUOTE]
I think the taking a stance against cigarettes might be redundant, given that was all dropped as a source of profit in the '80s.

I'd be happy to see bookmakers and breweries the next to be struck off the advertising list. Even if people are still allowed to punt and drink. Punting takes some degree of skill and analysis at least, far more than feeding pineapples into a machine that plays a happy tune every time you pull a lever.

There’s a reason that Bendon and Hedges don’t sponsor the cricket anymore lol. And anyway I’m pretty sure the MFC isn’t getting any money directly off alcohol, junk food, or sugary product advertising, is it?

Your kidding yourself if you don't know anyone who uses them casually.

IMO alcohol is still a much worse contributor to the problems in society and as I keep saying everyone (probably) on this forum will still go an enjoy a drink in the next 48 hours.

I assume some of the rent the vendors pay on game day goes to the club as part of the gate, so I guess we're profiting from them.

Off for a few bevs in a couple of hours, I can't wait. The good thing is that I'll probably spend $25 and walk away in a good mood having had a good chat over them, rather than dropping double that on light machines go flash bang for the privilege of sitting in a room with a bunch of crones. Binge drinking is antisocial but alcohol itself isn't. Pokies are the definition of antisocial.

I completely agree, but your saying alcohol is controlled for you. For some people a couple of drinks with the boys leads to going home and beating their partners or drunk driving where as I could go to a pokie machine drop 10 with a beer and leave laughing.

Yeah you’re confusing alcohol consumption with domestic violence there. Alcohol doesn’t make you beat anyone up, being a piece of shit does

this conversation has made me want to grab a schooner and slap a pineapple in a machine when i get off the train on the way home from work.

Alcohol is a massive contributer. You can't deny that.

in perth only place you can play pokies is the casino so if you want to gamble you have to go to the casino. Weird going to melbourne and nearly every single pub has pokies. reckon it should be like WA. could imagine being easier to get to em would create alot more problem gamblers who sink everything into them. ive got an addictive personality so id be ****ed if they were in every pub. **** those things

got a few mates who are the best campaigners in the world sober but few drinks in they turn into deadset ****wits. i drink for a good time a laugh and to let go off my anxiety and be stressfree for a session so i guess people who drink psychologically change 1 way or another cause id never just start talking to randoms in person and those mates would never think of turning into Chuck Liddell sober

Yeah I hate to break it to you but your mates are just deadset ****ers to begin with

glad you know better than everyone who knows them or have never met someone that changes to a different person when drunk but thanks for the imput
Yeah I don’t associate with people who change personalities when they’re drunk. If you turn into a dickhead after a few drinks that’s because you’re a twat, not because of the alcohol

havent you realised yet he is the judge on everything right and wrong from a social point of view

Just off the pokie topic for a moment, i loved this from Milkshakes, i hope it's backed up
The North Melbourne boys were giving us a fair bit of stick about it. I certainly know about it now. I think there is a fair bit of bitterness towards North – that they have got the wood over the boys for most of their career. It’s a pretty big stat and we’re pretty keen to get rid of it
