Hankook & Kaspersky - god tier sponsorship
Just remembered how in 2012 we couldn't find a back of jumper sponsor anywhere, we had the Reach logo going in the preseason matches. Then someone decides to throw us a bone. A little online company called Energy Watch signs on as a major sponsor. The Footy Show even get the CEO to go on to annouce it.

A couple of days later a journo finds his facebook page is littered with hundreds of sexist and racist posts and we have to drop them. The media were asking Schwab if we even bothered googling the bloke before signing his company on.

"THE MELBOURNE Football Club is pleased to announce that Australia’s Number 1 energy broker, ‘EnergyWatch’ will become the Club’s new joint major sponsor, signing a collective deal worth $6 million over the next three years.

The EnergyWatch deal becomes the single biggest sponsorship in the Melbourne Football Club’s history and one of the biggest in the AFL.

EnergyWatch will appear on the back of the Club guernsey, on all Club apparel and will have significant signage presence at the MCG. EnergyWatch will also incorporate a creative advertising campaign around Number One Draft pick Jack Watts."

I can't find a version of Watts' ad on YouTube. It definitely featured a Sherrin - can't remember too much more about it.

And then this just over seven months later:

"The Melbourne Football Club has dumped the company EnergyWatch from its sponsors list, after its CEO admitted to making a series of racial slurs on Facebook.

The cash-strapped Demons have already confronted a number of race issues in recent weeks and dumping a $2 million sponsor will cost them dearly."

Didn't realise they lasted so long! I think I mixed them up with the front of jumper sponsor for 2012. Iirc we couldn't find any and after we sacked Energy Watch we played a game without any sponsors and the Energy Watch logo taped over.

I think we were rumoured to land Mission at one point, but then the Bulldogs beat us to it or something?

The one thing I remember with Whoooooooooooo is he really attached himself to Paul Roos' veil of negativity comments, going so far as to accuse everyone on this board of being the reason the club was shit when they got upset after a loss.
The other interesting features were:

His going on and on about how we should have invested the Debt Demolition money gathered by Jimmy Stynes directly in the football department and not bothered with the debt (even though doing so would constitute fraud having been collected on the promise of paying off debt)

Brief period of time as a volunteer phoning members asking them to renew, which apparently was the same as having close contacts with the CEO and board and secret inside information

Was going to donate 350 thousand to MFC until he decided it wasn't a 'positive community' so gave it to a Cambodian orphanage instead.

I also recall I went off at him BIG TIME after I returned from the pub once. Really let it rip. I wasn't proud of it the next day so went back to delete it but could find it nowhere. So I've never known whether a mod did me a favour and removed my rant, or whether I was sufficiently drunk to only imagine that I wrote a post along those lines, or whether I wrote it but somehow didn't post. Its a mystery that puzzles me to this day

Was trying to find the Jack Watts commercial on YouTube , no luck :(

RE: The lost Jack Watts ad. The best I could find was a Supermercado tweet that contained a detailed description of it..

found this tho

Every time I've seen him post-footy he looks more and more disheveled. It always amuses me considering how he was always percieved as a pretty boy.

Yeah so I don't think I'm opening that

Its nothing, just an absolutely terrible story, think its cause its the TAB but it has nothing to do with gambling either.

Paul Roos' veil of negativity
On reading this comment BL, it immediately reminded me of how the self protectionist culture grows inside the club.

It would almost go hand in hand with supporters and players alike, even though they are separated for most time, thru the week.

With the expectation during bad times of losses, on a weekly basis. The fans get that veil about them; but so do the players as well.

The answer, imo, is to get angry at the constant losses, and fight to reverse the trend. Instead of going deeper into the shell and just becoming negatively critical, of all.

I imagine the fans go into negative mode, because they feel so distant from, and powerless to, force change within the club.

I can also see how having the clubs board watching, socialising and they're board meetings within the walls of the Mcc... that this exacerbates this very needy issue, for club supporters, and club members.

If supporters feel helpless about the direction of the clubs workings, then of course they will feel totally negative. and without being heard, let alone important, or influential.
