We didn't. Neeld did.

In his mind he had to eject the unresponsive players. Reality was that he couldn't invoke a response in the first place. He basically sacked players as a result of his own coaching inadequacies.

If we can get some players back we could beat Carlton but it's touch and go. Brisbane is not guaranteed either.

This is the stark reminder to Roos and co and those who have touted our improvement since Roos took over. True improvement is measured relative to the opposition, not the basket case version of your self from yesteryear.

I think we have definitely improved, it's just being masked by injuries. Having said that, finishing 17th might not be the worst thing provided we maintain our effort. It would mean getting who we want at the draft, maybe a priority pick too. Then next year our side would look dramatically different with Petracca and Trengove being like new draftees.

We're less shit, no doubt. It just hasn't been a tangible proposition regarding the ladder.

Importantly, our list has definitely improved and that at least allows us to sleep at night because it means Goodwin has a solid base to work with in two years.

Basically an emotional reaction to a loss It pissed me off the week before when he blamed players inability to follow instruction as to why Collingwoods spare defender wasn't manned up. I just don't buy that. If he instructed someone to man the spare up they would have. He might have mentioned to the players at half time to man up the spare but there was still a lot of opportunity during the game to make a specific instruction to a player or players. It smacked of him not wanting to own up to a mistake.

Well funnily enough this is what sunk you in that thread with most posters. Personally, whilst I thought it was emotive at the time, I think if you had developed your OP a bit more you would have made a decent case. FWIW I half agreed with you.

Most posters assumed you were devaluing what Roos had achieved to date whilst I wasn't so sure. The vibe I got was that your OP was about the future rather than the past. I.E. has Roos got the most out of the group that he can given his coaching style? Not such a silly question given he only took on a third year at PJs request so it's fair to question what his third year plans are.

For me, Roos' legacy at Melbourne will be list rebuild and FD structure rather than purely coaching. On that front whilst I think Goodwin coaching next year is a nice prospect, Roos will enhance the list better for when Goodwin takes over in 2017.

He's undoubtedly been great for us. He has a calm manner and isn't reactive. He also has enough respect in the football world that the players have automatically bought into his game plan. Building a style based on defence I think is also the right way to go. My problem with our style though is that we move the ball so slowly in attack. We very rarely run the ball and move it quickly. We get FA cheap goals. How many times have you seen us go coast to coast in the last five years? It's way to easy to defend against opposition with slow ball movement. You just man up and wait for the turnover. I think it's occurred because of our focus on defence and holding onto the ball, but also maybe a lack of guys who have that attacking instinct. Off the top of my head the only ones I can think of are Harry, TMAC, Kent, JKH, Frost, Terlich, Jeffy and most of those guys are injured.

I think he is building us in 3 stages, last year was purely about defence an it was almost as if the scoreboard didn't matter , so long as we could stop our opponent scoring

This year contested ball has been a huge focus and at various stages attacking a little more , we Definently have been opened up a little more as a result

Next year I expect there to be another enement added which would then be used in tandem with the team defence/contested ball we have been running with .. I honestly don't think roos gives a shit How many games we win this year, it's all about the long term process

As bad as he was under Neeld, he was in similar form in the ruck under Bails IIRC - we were all pretty high on him here, probably yourself included!

To be honest last year I wanted one, I dont even care about it anymore..

It should never be handed out ever again under any circumstance, We arent a PP club anymore we are more than competitive and the PP would bring us backwards IMO

Yeah no. We were leading the game some point after quarter time v GWS, Adelaide, Port, Collingwood, Saints. We've beaten two sides in top 8 contention. We've struggled with injuries. We don't need a PP.

There was definitely a premeditated plan based on building our defensive pressure, no doubt. Stopping the gaping losses the main focus.

I think though even last year Roos admitted they went overboard with the purely defensive side. I think he realised there was potential to do more harm than good but couldn't arrest things in the back half of last year because they were a tired group and had become programmed.

It doesn't matter who you are, you are learning all the time as the game evolves. I sense that Roos has found it harder than he expected to instill the basics of ball movement in this group even after replacing half the side.

Attacking is clearly the hardest aspect of the game to master in the modern game (IMO) but I think Roos may also have under rated its importance in improving our defence, they complement each other. The good sides show this.

Clearly Goodwin isn't ready so the whole Goodwin now thing is moot but he will soon inherit this team and I think the sooner he has a bigger say in things the better.

Ruckmen always take longer to come on than other types.

I could understand a few of his trades and delistings, but Martin was a surprise to me.

I don't think it was a particularly obvious one myself.

Like I said, I certainly didn't expect this sort of form from him, though.
