Speculation George Stevens

Opinion seems pretty divided among our fans as to whether he can develop into a contested beast, or if he'll always be just that little bit too slow and stodgy to truly make it at AFL level.

Depends what the Crows are looking for. If it's purely an inside extractor type, it could be a good fit. But if you want some sort of pace and flair through the midfield, he's not the guy.

Think the finals proved we need to add someone that can reliably win the ball and be strong in the contest (if we can’t land a star like Trac). Berry isn’t that guy

It sounds like he could potentially end up a taller, more damaging version of Crouch

Im a big fan of George Stevens... Beautiful kick of the Football, can find the the hard ball, doesn't have a huge tank but that's something that he can build on. His not very fast player. Can take a strong mark. I was hoping for more games for him this year. But I can't blame him if he seeks a trade and wanting more games .
A 3rd round pick is all he seems to be worth at best.
Wish him all the best

Bit of talk on here that he’s being courted by the Crows, and now Midweek Tackle are reporting it (they’ve probably been reading BF, to be fair)

GWS’ 3rd, our own 3rd or an F3, you’d think? Only two games, but got a Brownlow vote in one of them

From our perspective, I think we'd expect to get more value out of Stevens than whatever we'd get at pick 58 or whatever it ends up being, however 2026 is year 3 for George and there is a glut of young midfielders at Geelong who are in a very similar make-or-break situation next year.

If he wants to go, we should make it happen without too much fuss and give him the chance to showcase what he can do at AFL level at another club. It's a bit strange to me though, as I would have thought our current midfield is a great fit for Stevens to just extract and get it to our running machines on the outside.

Geelong would like to keep him but with worpel coming for his own sake he needs more gametime elsewhere-we won't stand in his way.
I doubt we get much of value in a trade, probably a r3 or late pick slide.

Under Scott you need to be flexible. A magnet that is locked in position apart from being subbed off is not going to work long term. People have said that you can't use a tagger in modern footy and Scott has worked around that. The way to work around it is to have every other player pivot around Mullin. If you have a player in Stevens that can't pivot their role then it makes it impossible to play Stevens and use a tagger together.

Think he'd be better as a half forward?

Not a loaded question, but is he just another George Horlin Smith?

Yes his lack of athletic ability is the query so it could be the same result. But I also think hes a better player than ghs so he could overcome it.

There seems to be a lot of goodwill here from cats supporters on letting a player of theirs go...geelong never let go of what they want to hold....warning bells maybe!!

It's more because his family is massive Geelong and hes a lovely kid who is a leader. We dont want to hold him back from.an opportunity.

We are in desperate need for a pure inside extractor (seeing we had some bad fade outs at clearance throughout the year), so this is a target that makes some sense on our side. As much as Stevens could be another Jackson Hately type.
