Getting rid of spyware

I use Grisoft anti Virus, Adaware, Spybot S and D and Spyware Blaster. I get jack all spyware, and I should, by rights, given some of the skulduggery I get up to.

Often when you're fighting things like Vx2, that evil mutha, you need to be in safe mode. Get in there, run the finders, delete the crap, and reboot. And you really should have Hijack This. I have a little experience with reading Hijack This logs, so if anyone's really pushing it uphill, I'll try and help, as well.

Another thing you can do to avoid some of these nasties is to setup two accounts. Setup an "admin" account and a "limited user" account. Alot of the nasties that infect your pc need admin rights to install/run themselves. It takes 5 minutes to setup the accounts but can save you heaps of time and trouble down the track.

Use the "admin" profile only for tasks that require admin priveleges. Use the "limited user" profile for all web surfing, gaming etc. When logged as "limited user" you can also carry out admin taks by using the "run as" option. Just hold down the shift key and right click.

I managed to get a trojan and virus on my comp the other day. Got rid of the trojan, but cant get rid of the virus.

I use Trend Micro and it can locate the virus but it cant Quarantine, Clean or Delete it.

What should i do?

re-start your pc in safe mode... run your virus scanner and delete the virus...

Is anyone having trouble updating ad aware? When I try to update it, it goes to 5% complete and won't go any further.

I tried uninstalling and redownloading it but it still won't update. Thanks to this move I'm 518 days behind in updates.

Anyone have any ideas why this has happened?:(

this has happened to me a couple of times but usually fixes itself the next week.

i managed to infect my new laptop with spyware a week after i got it! Think it was Virusburst. Norton which came with the PC didn't stop it (i need to go get avast), Ad-aware didn't remove it completely but Super Platinum Membership - https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/account/upgrades ;) absolutely killed it, it's at download.com

Perhaps someone here can help me.

I seem to have some sort of malware, virus or spyware that is restricting me from being able to update Windows ( I cannot connect to microsoft.com or associated sites either), and also stops me from being able to view the main hotmail site amongst many others, and sign into Windows Live Messenger.
Whatever it is that is doing this has also rendered outlook useless, as it constantly asks for my username and password without connecting to the POP3 server.

I've been looking around on tech forums for the last day or so and everything that I've read, doesn't seem to fix my problem.

here's what I've tried.

*deleted all internet history, files, and cookies
*Checked my firewall.
*add windowsupdate etc as secure sites.
*tried a number of specific remedies to try and gain access to Messenger, without success.

I have AVG, Avast, SuperAntiSpyware, Adaware and Spybot. All have found problems and deleted or healed them, but the problem of not getting any access to these sites and to my email persist.

Any help would be grand.

Not yet, but I will try when I get home.
The problem I also have is that downloads will not work for me either.
Download.com, where I normally get anything I want from, plus other sources will not opn the window that allows you to 'open' or 'save'.
I'll cross my fingers, but I'm guessing that downloading another browser may not eventuate.

Re: Spyware...

Anyone else having issues with a search engine which has nominated itself called something like "ms162.mysearch.com......."?

We're running AVG Free and Spyware Blaster. We downloaded Morpheus a few weeks ago, and since then, we've had this ms162.mysearch thingy, and our interwebs keeps dropping out for no particular reason. We've uninstalled Morpheus. Any other advice?

Re: Spyware...

Thanks, Borgsta. The ms162.mysearch thingy seems to have self destructed. Now, if the interwebs will stay connected for more than 15 minutes, I'll know that we've had a win. We keep getting booted off.

As I thought, I could not dowload another browser.

Yesterday, I formatted my hard drive, and re-installed xp. Nothing has changed. I'm still unable to visit microsoft.com( and a host of other sites), hotmail, sign-in to MSN and get non web-based email.

very frustrated.

Does anyone know if I have another hard drive, which I do, that could be harbouring bad files, can that affect the operating system that is installed on the C drive?

No, it can't affect anything that quickly. To do anything you would have to run the file and seeing as you formatted your main drive it would be out of the registry and impossible for it to run itself automatically.

You should download another browser using a friends computer and then install it on your PC to check. I think you should have done that before formatting anyway.

Have you tried doing a net search for ppl with similar problems?

I did a search of the error code that came up when I was unable to sign in to messenger. And there were a few people who were having that same error, but it seems that thier problem is differewnt to mine as they only had to do minor alterations to their set up(firewall etc) and they were away again

Thanks Borgsta, will do.

I have since downloaded firefox 2 and still the problems persist.

just a list of some of the sites I cannot run:
hotmail.com
myspace.com
heraldsun.com.au
microsoft.com

plus outlook will not open my emails, it continuously asks for my username and password.

Does anyone know if those sites use a special format, or anything needs to be done to run these sort of sites.

I have no worries getting on bigfooty, and most other forums.
I can use P2P file sharing programs.
Google works fine, and alot of sites do, but whatever it is that is stopping me from signing into any messenger programs(ayhoo messenger is the exception, it works fine) also affects the running of these sites pages.
