It seems like everybody's a bit surprised by some of the selection decisions this year. But thinking about it I think there's a clear tactic to get as many players as possible to about 20 games this year. It seems like if you've played less than about 20 games you get given games basically for free. As soon as you get to that 20 game mark the expectations get massively ramped up.

The way I see it players with over 20 games aren't competing to get in the best 22 but more like the best 18 because there's something like 4 spots a week going to really inexperienced players. Just look through the players who have been preferred and those who have been left out.

Gregson and Lang haven't been dropped all year despite their performances dropping off a bit. Cockatoo has shown flashes of brilliance but nothing like the consistency at VFL level of GHS or Smedts recently. Kolodjashnij has been good but they're preferring him to Rivers who was excellent for much of the year. Luxford got games with only patchy VFL form and both Thurlow and Cowan were brought back in at AFL level quickly after not dominating at VFL.

In contrast guys like GHS, Smedts and Blease need to dominate VFL for a number of weeks before getting a run at AFL level. Even Walker was dropped harshly earlier in the year.

But the 2 that really fascinate me are Bews and Kersten. Bews' form dropped off only a bit and he's out of the side once he gets to the magic 20 game mark. Now Kersten, who has been given a pretty cushy run at selection, gets publicly asked for more the week he reaches 20 games.

So what do people think? Is it a tactic so we've got a bunch of players with experience when our oldies shift out over the next couple of years? Anyway it was just a thought...and a good distraction from the bloody cricket.

Though I think your theory holds water. Just look at Mr G he's played 20 games against men in the SANFL and it's done him the world of good. I think as well after 20 games you should be past silly little mistakes etc.

Im not sure if the number 20 is correct - not sure its wrong either - but I like the concept. Bigger picture you have to try the kids and yo have to let them have a run at it. Some have gotten that - Varcoe, Murda, and some have not - Hamling, Schroeder, Brown.

The best you can hope for is that the current list of under 30 odd gamers get those chances -

Yeah I don't think it's to do with 20 games exactly. And I really think it's mainly been this year and perhaps a bit last year. But there really does seem to be different levels of expectation for Lang, Cockatoo, Gregson, Kolo, Luxford, Cowan and Kersten compared to Smedts, GHS, Blease and now Bews.

I don't think it's that they don't rate the guys they're leaving out. I mean they've given GHS and Bews new contracts. I just think that they're ok with somewhat gifting a few games to kids with talent and good VFL form to get them through the "deer in headlights" phase of their career. Once you're past that point it seems like you either earn your place as a genuine starter or you're not picked. It'll be interesting to see how it works because we're going to need a bunch of these 20-50 gamers to come in over the next couple of seasons to replace the experience that we'll lose.

The figures certainly seem to support what you suggest.
It's a bit of a change of policy though. Murdoch, for example, got almost 50 games before he was worth feeding.

I like your theory. I'm not sure that I believe it, but it's certainly possible that you are onto something.

Perhaps they are trying to push as many of these young guys forward to create a pool of players who are specifically ready to go next year, given all the experienced guys who we are supposedly going to bring in over the off-season i.e. We are preparing for a full-on flag assault in 2016!
