Is there a glaring deficiency with our current list, if so what in peoples opinions are we in need of?
Obviously with the approaching retirements of defenders like Lonergan, Enright and Bartel is there a need for Defenders, Especially KPD?
I'm no good at guessing where we need to build but I'm really interested in the wise heads of big footy using their vast depth of knowledge to pick out a few areas of improvement we need to work on in the coming years.

I dont think there is one other than a general increase of talent and skill across the board.

This will be the recruiting focus. Particularly trying to find the next Enright and Mackie (while hoping Thurlow recovers to be one of them). Possibly also a speedy half back which we haven't had since Wojcinski and would give us more tactical flexibility.

Exactly - it reads like the extent of the research was:

1: who is out of contract at seasons end
2: are they from WA
3: if yes to both it obviously means, 1 + 2 = Fremantle will be interested

I'm used to this nonsense. European football 1+1 transfer deducing is worse. About time clubs and players called them out (across the globe) for this BS frankly.

I openly admit I have no idea.

The list right now looks fine.
But what does the game look like in 5 years time?

Because if the traditional centre half forward and full forward still exist then that's a glaring hole.
Because those guys take time. And it's hard to find an excellent one. Never mind two.

Well, let's see.....

Lonergan is done, Mackie is squibbing it, Kolo is struggling, Enright is retiring, Murdoch is useless, Bartel is done, Blitz is lost, Kersten is looking elsewhere, Mots is lazy, Stanley isn't up to it, Hawkins isn't leading, Vardy is broken, Clark is unreliable, Selwood sooks, PFD sprays em, Gregson doesn't kick goals, Guthrie is just crap, the crowd is too quiet, the cheer squad is embarrassing, and the coach......well, the coach has no clue, no emotion, no Plan B, and is consistently outcoached.

I'm thinking we need to draft a whole new club.

There's a debate worth having at some point.

I think it's quite possible that this won't be so.

Yet we sit top 4, halfway through. Jeez I actually laughed out loud halfway reading this. I'm sure it's entirely toungue in cheek, but im equally sure there are people agreeing with this. Glass half full for me. I feel pretty lucky to be a cats supporter.
Bloody boring though with no hoops running around this weekend.

Yep :)

Now we finally have some decent ruck options and back up id like to see some investment in a key defender and a key forward in the next draft. Possibly even go for 3 talls with option for them to learn both and fingers crossed for at least one A grade talent. Speedy half back would be next.

CHF and FF will still exist.

I'm of the view that not only is it a glaring hole on our list, it's a glaring hole that poses a slightly more immediate, urgent problem than it might seem at first glance, in the sense that we should already be factoring it in to our draft selections. Hawkins may be a few years away from retirement yet but still, he's about to turn 28. If you make the admittedly up-for-debate assumption that our KPF succession plan revolves around drafting a big forward rather than trading one in, then ideally we should already have a young KPF in the team right now serving his apprenticeship (Kersten may have CHF potential at a push but frankly I think he's more suited to the third tall role).

In five years time, I really don't want to see us relying on a 21-year-old kid to lead the line post-Hawkins in the same way Essendon rely on Daniher.

Would love to grab Jetta from Dees as FA for nothing, trade our 2nd round pick this year for McKenzie at GCS, trade our two 3rd round picks (one from Bris in walker/Jansen trade) to upgrade to a decent 2nd rounder and use it in draft along with our existing round 4 pick, use the round 5 GWS pick we got for SJ to upgrade Ruggles, and then do a clean out of our older rookies - bates, Delaney.

Then we can start hunting fresh key position talent and some more midfielders via the draft over next two years with all of our picks in hand.

Big toast to the list management and recruiting this year - not just helped Geelong to top 4 but (iMHO) saved us from being bottom 6.

Aside from getting it right with Henderson, Danger and Smith, Stanley last year and they made the right calls with sticking with Menzel, and McCarthy and probably Kersten (who many, like me,had both of these gone two years ago) and found Ruggles. Take these out and frankly I reckon we would have struggled to win 5 games to this point.

Agree completely.
Only point of contention could be whether it is better to have done what Saints did, really bottom out, recruit well with young guns, and rebuild properly, or what we have done which certainly appears short term to be not only exciting, but possibly yielding the ultimate success.

if either one of Jimmy or Corey goes, I'd consider that an instance of complete mismanagement by our coaching staff
It's been stated from the start of the season that Enright was playing his last year - even his wife said so! When a bloke will have played a club record number of games I don't know how you could possibly blame the club if he decides to hang up the boots.

problem with the Saints approach is that they will lose the the likes of Riewoldt, Montagna etc by the time the young guns really come on. Much prefer our approach.

We are trying the Hawks approach, which needs really smart decisions and trading.

Saints approach is good (particulariy if you have little to trade with) but aside from long term pain also has other risks - Melbourne, Tigers even Carlton showed how easy it is to squander the top ten talent and years of rebuilding.

Shame about Jetta he would've been ideal right type of player we need, good age and unrestricted f/a. Back to the drawing board.
Arrived on the afl site says the a number of clubs were interested be interesting if Geelong was one of those clubs.

If only we still had Gore, Jansen, and Walker...

I'm going to call it early and say... It's too early to call! Our needs depend so much on what happens between now and October.

For Example.
  • Delaney has just gotten back on the park. He might burn it up the rest of the season, we'll be wanting to hold onto him if thats the case. (This eases our need for drafting a KPD in the short term.
  • Will Clark make an impact and prove durable for the rest of the season? or will he break down again?
If those things both prove true then we can perhaps not place as much focus on finding new KPD's, and KPF's.

Ultimately IMHO Wells and his team tend to draft for talent and and recruit for need.

The 'discovery' and growth of players like Gregson, Lang, Cockatoo, and Ruggles, has been fantastic. We're also still yet to see what Menegola can do when it really matters during the season.

That is 5 solid players or 1/4 of a team in 2 years. Add Selwood, Dangerfield, Henderson, and Smith to this and you have 9 players, half a team in 2 years.

That is exceptional.

My guess is that this year at draft we'll just take whoever looks most likely with our picks, whilst upgrading 1 or both of Ruggles and Delaney. If we trade at all it will be for another KPD to cover the loss of Lonergan.
