It is time for Pick 7.
GWS Giants are up.
If Sanders, Caddy and O'Sullivan are all still available.
Would you/we trade a Future First (FF2024) to the Giants for any of these prospects?

Thus insuring both a Caddy & O'Sullivan combo... or Caddy & Sanders... or Sanders & O'Sullivan.

Was 2023 just a blimp or the beginning of a slide?

"Next stop Willoughby... "

Wouldn’t do it.. think we are a potential risk to slide further.

My sources told me he had a flare-up again.

Scott Lycett come on down...
Horrible, do not want Lycett who is a bash and crash ruck who's body is falling apart. Literally just another Ceglar. If we are getting a back up ruck, look to the VFL/SANFL for a back up ruck around the age of 25-27 who has a mature body and is at a club where he can't progress due to whoever the ruck in their AFL system is.

No rucks over 30 has to be our rule.

Given the evidence we do have, and the pattern of behaviour Clayton has shown over the past 12 months, I wouldn't blame anyone for being suspicious of the claimed 'seizure'.
Perhaps.

But believing clubs mask drug issues with phantom “12-13 week calf injuries” and the like is true tin foil hat stuff.

Nope, take Best Player Available and go from there.
As much as I think Caddy has bust risk we have to take that risk if he's there.

My preference would be

1. Sanders
2. O'Sullivan
3. CAddy

But that's just me, i reckon we can fill a position of need at 25, at Pick 7 (10) you go BPA and work it out from there.

Only if it was guaranteed that we could in turn trade our pick 8 for a FF.

Terrible news. Both for him and the club. Will miss much needed development time.

It was also totally inevitable and expected for a 200+ cm player.

Id imagine the only people seriously disappointed in this news are the ones who genuinely thought Conway would be the number 1 ruckman by the end of 2024. For the rest of us, this was only ever a matter of time. Conway will be 23-24 before he is ready to take over, this is not unusual for players of this type. People need to chill with the expectations on this kid and and let him develop.

Not sure about inevitable and expected but it shows that we can’t have all our future ruck eggs in the one basket. I know we’ve just brought in Furphy but he’d be at long odds to have a long AFL career atm.

Sorry I'm not as well versed in the science of these injuries. Do you mean being 200+ cm made him more susceptible to bone fragments breaking free? Or that he will have foot injuries until he is 23.

I'm not aware of either being typical for tall athletes.

Historically the taller players take longer to develop, either because it takes them longer to settle and find their spot in a team, or because their bodies take longer to develop and that can come with injuries early in careers. Tim English is a good example of this, where it took him a good 2-3 years to find consistent form at AFL level and was able to run out a season without injuries interrupting his continuity.

Conway will be the same, it will take him time. Im not doubting his ability, but we need to relax on the expectations while he is still developing. Thinking he is a chance to push Stanley out of the number 1 spot by the end of 2024 (as some here have suggested) is an example of putting way too much pressure on the kid.

Yeah fair enough, I don't take any issue with that and am more in the patient camp. I do think best-case scenario we can get a good 5-8 AFL games into him this season and that would likely be around what we'd expect Stanley to miss through injury and/or management.

And people were taking the piss at me suggesting Conway would have no impact next year... Made it clear we need a ruck who can get on the field and compete and everyone stuck their head in the ground.

I heard he visited the surf coast once and liked it

In all seriousness, our own JC13 has mentioned it's a distinct possibility. Our own list management have alluded '24 & '25 being active trade periods, with us having cap space to burn.

Country kid, best mates with JC13 the footballer, OOC, at a club where it's seemingly not frowned upon to pack your bags early...you get the idea.

B Smith and him feel like obvious targets going forward for what we need. A genuine number 1 mid to complete the midfield rebuild, and Hawk/Jezza replacement.

A 20 year old who had played all of about 3 matches of footy was never going to be the guy we relied on next year, anyone thinking that was severely deluded in the first place.

It’s not that I don’t think Conway has the skills to succeed, no matter what way anyone wants to frame his post season surgery it’s a big concern. He’s spent every off season and every season at the club battling injuries.

It lessons ever further the impact he can have next year and the fact we really need to add another ruck to the list.

The best case scenario is he plays a dozen games or so next year in the afl and is able to build his fitness.
It could be he has all his injuries when he’s young and his body is developing like Max Gawn or Pat Cummins. But that’s the rare case often a player who consistently has injuries struggles to overcome them to reach their potential.
Conway is not at that stage yet but he’s getting close to Dawson Simpson.

At this stage that's just as likely as an injury plagued career IMO. He's hardly unique in what he's going through, this is close to a given with young ruckman.

Because it's his feet being injured rather than a hamstring or calf, it suggests that his body can't handle the duress of an AFL workload while he's still growing, rather than inherent weakness in his muscle tissue like Cockatoo for instance that can plague careers.

It's a really common issue for people who are physically active while growing, it just usually occurs for most people at 10-14 (E.g puberty).

Difference for ruckman is a lot of them are still growing into their early twenties, so unless Toby's growing until he's 32, he should be okay in the long run I reckon.
