Couldn't have said it better myself

I read the quoted post earlier as I walked to my car & then got distracted without replying
I would suggest that you perhaps put yourself into the shoes of an indigenous person who has had to deal with accusations of “laziness” and “poor work ethic” because of their race.

This is a common stereotype used to vilify indigenous people.

The post was suggesting that they shouldn’t give Stengle a long term contract because he might get lazy and not be motivated after he was awarded the contract.

That could easily be interpreted as casual racism, and to suggest otherwise is highly naive.

I am not saying it was intentional, but I did suggest that it is a fine line and the poster should be careful.

I love Stengle and am in the camp of overpaying him to stay but I could name 20 better players in the league off the top of my head without even trying, let’s not go too far
Beat me to it!

Stengle is a star, and possible the best small forward in the game (Rankine. Pretty bloody good too 😀). But top twenty, not even close for me. Imagine how many key position players or mids we would prefer, it would be a longer list than most would realise.

Stengle is a gun though and I really hope he stays too. He so introverted I just can’t imagine him leaving unless the money was ridiculous overs.

Dawson
Rankine
Neale
Cripps
Curnow
Weitering
Daicos
Merrett
Serong
Brayshaw
J Cameron
Anderson
Miller
T Green
Taylor
T Greene
Sicily
Gawn
Petracca
Larkey
Butters
Rozee
Gulden
Warner
Heeney
Bont

And honestly there is more
You are living in 2021 or 2022.

Dawson, miller, Cameron, T Greene, larkey should be nowhere near that list.

Stengle is playing way better than all of them.

I also agree with that tbh. If Holmes went to Collingwood for money I don’t think people would be saying “that’s ok I feel like he might become lazy and complacent anyway”.

You’re being silly now. Larkey kicked 70 goals last year in the worst team in recent memory.

Please stop talking 💩. There is not 1 little bit of cats_09 said or trying to say anything...
And I have indigenous history in myself, so for crying out loud , don't bring in the racism card or even mention it as there is nothing to talk about

Ok, what of my post above (post 8132) do you not agree with?

I am genuinely interested.

Thats just wrong lol. Larkey, Greene and Dawson were all Australian in 2023 haha
Come on now, we all know they are on average form right now.

the AA selectors love to give charity spots away to the one decent pmayer from a shit team. Dawson and larkey were good not great last year.

And Greene is running on reputation not performance.

Then he is leaving, because he is worth more and the league knows it.

Then he can leave

As Selwood said when he retired:
"I've played under three presidents, I've had two coaches, two CEOs, three footy managers [at Geelong] — it's just such a stable and unbelievable place to go to work," he said.
"They put people in underneath them who love going to work. You don't come to the Geelong Football Club to go to work for money, you come for the experience. I've loved every part of that."

IF Tyson's priority is squeezing every cent out of this next contract, then good luck to him at his be club

But why do we expect him to take unders? Why should we take advantage of his loyalty? It is distasteful.

I have a simple idea - pay the man what he is worth. Fair and equitable for both sides. That is how you build and maintain culture in any organisation.

Are we playing in a professional league or not?

We are all living in the year 2024... No one thinks of that rubbish anymore.. we are moving forward, we're not looking what people said years and years ago, as we're looking forward..

I would love for that to be true.

But those stereotypes are well and truly alive. I wish it weren’t true, but they are still prevalent

Which is why posters need to be careful and sensitive when posting things that could be interpreted in that manner.

Sorry, it just is.

Like I said... iv indigenous history in myself.. and I done see that... so I'm speaking for a person who fits this bill...
And there is nothing to be sorry...
AS WE ARE ALL MOVING FORWARD... NOT GOING FOR WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PASS.. WE ARE MOVING FORWARD AS ONE!

It's interesting because I'm sure I've read comments in the past regarding players like Stringer pulling the finger out in a contract year...

A couple of years back in an earlier iteration of this thread I'm pretty sure we saw more than a few posters happy to Jordan Clark move on as some deemed him lazy, and wouldn't be surprised if I saw a similar line used in discussion of SDK this year

I think one thing we all need to be mindful of is that we should all be able to provide constructive criticism & critiques of players, and it's fine for others to disagree with what's said, without accusations that said comments have unsavoury undertones.

If a comment was along the lines of, "indigenous players have been known to be lazy, so we shouldn't overpay Stengle with this contract", then yeah that's pretty obviously overstepping the line

But if the comment is along the lines of, "Stengle is having a great season but he was down on form last year, so I'd be happy to not overpay him based on half a great season if the return over the next few years is more like 2023 instead", then surely it's a fair assessment

Obviously wording changes amongst individual posters, but surely we can all differentiate between critiquing an individual & making larger generalisations
