2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

Sam Swadling's highlights look good for a guy not mentioned much.
Think he might be the classic guy where you need a low light tape as well. Remember in one of the champs games he was a real agent of chaos.

Guessing the Buckley connection isn't that strong after all

According to Twomey, Cox has skiped nominating for the draft, just so he can sign with Fremantle in the SSP period.

While Cox turns 35 in March, it’s believed that he could land a two-year deal at the Dockers.

So he’s unpredictable! Trying to be positive here…

This is the game. You can obviously see why people are excited - he's a good size, has a contested game, some of his kicks are beautiful - but there's the passage from about 2:30 on in the video where, with his team up by 11 late in the third, he fires a kick inboard into D50 that his teammate does well to clean up, then takes another bad option by kicking into the defensive corridor to a 2 vs 3 and turns it over, then gives away a high tackle inside D50. Every player makes mistakes and he could well have been told to move quick, take risks etc but got the impression (not just from that passage) that the football instincts lagged a bit behind the physical gifts or even the skills.

That's fair, the way I saw it is they could have just traded down and picked up Tauru and Whitlock and finally got some quality into that spine, and then picked someone like CDT/Taylor/Robey this year to really hammer it home.

I'd take that 1000 times over just FOS (who I rate, but don't think will be a superstar) and then paying a fortune for Whitlock too.

The offers to get up the order last year were ridiculous. They could've made out like bandits trading down, and instead let Richmond do it to them instead.
Yeah they definitely walked away from some opportunities with pick 2, but that just feels like a normal North draft.

I'd be pretty happy with Holmes or Rodriguez at our second pick. I think Rodriguez would probably immediately be our best non-senior midfielder and could shape as a good Worpel/Atkins replacement in a couple of years. Re-watched some Holmes highlights and confirmed what I thought watching him live - he's a different player from his brother and probably a better natural footballer, certainly better at stoppages than Max was when he arrived. But equally he doesn't seem to accelerate away from contests in the way Max does. That might mean his kicking is disqualifying.

My uneducated guess is we will trade out pick 19 for another pick in the 40s and a late F2 or early F3. We tried twice to trade out 19 for Curnow and Marshall, so doubt we rate the top end of the draft. Mikunda and Holmes with late picks, Mellor as a cat B and who knows with the rookie pick.

That wouldn't be a bad idea, but the upside to using 19 would be to let us freely trade more F1s if and when we chase Butters next year?

All late phantoms have us going thredgold at 23 who is a 194cm lockdown key defender with athletic upside.

Twomey hasn’t released his late phantom yet has he? In any case I doubt it changes unless he’s had some firm mail that we are taking someone else. Not convinced that Thredgold will be our pick. Just doesn’t seem to really fill an area of need and Wells indicated that we would use the draft to fill a couple of small holes.

Can see what you are talking about but I don’t see those errors as indicators of major flaws in his game. He probably just needs to learn a bit more game awareness.

He certainly can find the footy. His disposal is generally good. I reckon in an AFL environment it would clean up further. His actual kicking biomechanics look solid enough. He’s a good size, athletic and will develop into a great AFL physique.

Be happy to take him at 40. Rodriguez would be my first choice though. I’d even be comfortable if we took him at 19.

Was top-10 at the National Combine for all of sprint, standing vertical jump and running vertical jump. Athletic wise he seems a specimen.

Kind of interesting - if only to see how little we've had to work with come draft time compared to some other clubs over the past decade. Mids followed by key defenders are where we've spent the most points.

If he wants to play AFL why go to Freo? He would be behind Darcy and Jackson for games in the ruck and Treacy, Voss and Amiss for games down forward.
But if they're just about the only club interested in offering him a deal, a two-year contract isn't the worst option for him.

And he's potentially only one injury to Darcy or Jackson away from playing more than a few senior games. With Sean's injury history, you might just take those odds.

Anyway, I don't mind at all where he plays. Provided it's not with us.

even running!! Crickey that one shocks me from his highlights. He looks like a giraffe with a pencil up its butt when he runs
