HAWTHORN should welcome back one key defender for Sunday’s clash with North Melbourne but the immediate future of two other premiership players remains more doubtful.

The Hawks are winless after two rounds and face a testing clash against the Kangaroos.

However, they should regain full-back Stephen Gilham this week after a knee injury then illness forced him to miss the start of the season.

Ruckman Robbie Campbell and defender Trent Croad remain on the lengthy injury list at Waverley.

Croad broke his foot during last year’s grand final and had further surgery late last week, but Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said the club was confident the centre-half back would return to the field in 2009.

“Yeah we’d expect [him to],” Evans told afl.com.au on Monday morning.

“We’ve taken the pressure off in terms of time; it’ll clearly be in the second half of the season.”

The Hawks had hoped Croad might be back by the early to mid part of the year. But those plans were scrapped after his latest hiccup.

“He’s had some spurs removed off his ankle, which is a bit further down from the fracture site,” Evans said.

“It’ll take him off his feet for a week or two before he gets back into it. Hopefully he’ll come back with a better range of motion through there and less pain up at the ankle, so he should be able to progress to the next level quickly after that.”

Campbell has been battling a glute/hamstring problem. He was a late withdrawal from the side that was beaten by the Sydney Swans on Saturday night.

“Every week we thought he would play but it’s been very frustrating for him and for us,” Evans said.

“We need to get a better assessment of that because he seems to get through quite a bit of training and we’re quite positive that he’s about to return but he has then pulled up quite stiff and tight following it.”
Ben McGlynn (foot), Brad Sewell (groin), Travis Tuck (shoulder), Michael Osborne (hamstring) and Jordan Lewis (shoulder) also missed Saturday night’s match.

However, there is some good news for the Hawks with Gilham was set to make his comeback.

“His knee ended up being fine last week but he ended up having gastro and stomach issues from Tuesday through until about Thursday, so he will be fine,” Evans said.

Luke Hodge, who suffered a knock to the head on Saturday night, and Chance Bateman, who rolled an ankle, should both be okay to take on North Melbourne.

"Ruckman Robbie Campbell and defender Trent Croad remain on the lengthy injury list at Waverley."

read that, changed underwear, and read on. Cruel of the writer to put those two names together in a sentence referring to injuries, sounds like a niggle that could peter out and have him ready for the roos, but who knows. Maybe its just referring to the fact that hes been out for a lengthy ammount of time, or referring to the hawks having a 'lengthy', as in large, injury list.

Disappointed that not much was said about sewell's injury.

If Croad and Campbell are on a 'lengthy' injury list then we are in so much trouble. We need those 2 players back if we want anything to do with finals.. we arent just going make the finals because we won the flag last year, I hope the players understand that as they all have a funny way of showing it. They need a good slap on the face and hard, tough training. Clarkson should torture them! I cant get over how many players a pulling up sore after games, no-one elses team's players are doing that. Seems the Premiership win has backfired on us bigtime.

I know its a strange concept for this board/the internet in general but try the following two things:
  1. read the original post; and
  2. read the replies to the original post.
The lenghty injury list is a reference to the number of names on the list, not to the time a particular player is likely to be injured for.

Whatever, we need those 2 players in. We thought Robbie was fine, hes not, we thought Croady was alright to come back soon, well hes not coming back for yonks.

Utter nonsense. At no time have we been told that Croad will be coming back soon. The most optomistic predictions were in the second half of the season.

The situation with Campbell is disappointing but I dare say we would not be feeling it quite so badly if Taylor hadn't been a d#Skhead last week. But no matter how disappointing it is - Campbell cannot be rushed back in.

I don't believe a single thing in that article. I've lost all confidence with Hawthorn injury reports. I don't know why we even bother naming a team on Thursday night.

If we play 1 ruckman again and put Roughead in the ruck I'm going to explode. Bring Lisle in (he's about as bulky as Renouf) and he's 196cm if i'm not mistaken. There's no way we can leave Renouf to do all the rucking again, WE WILL GET ANNIHILATED, especially with McIntosh, Hale, Petrie and Goldstein all playing against the Bulldogs. Laidley will want to exploit our height

Hahhahaha its a bit like that. Dr Frankenstein down at Waverley will next amputate Robbie Campbells leg and declare he has the flu or gastro. Not sure why the Club doesnt actually tell us who is playing. I had heard on Wednesday last week that Campbell wouldnt play yet the Hawks decided to keep the charade up.

The Kangas are the land of Giants. Its pretty simple that if we dont have more forward entries this week we cant win. Our midfield must play a blinder and get the ball moving our way in a hurry. kangas will cause us nightmares with marking power this week. If Corey Jones has more than 3 kicks this week I am gonna jump from the dome roof.

Jones and Shagga Grant Kicked goals for fun against us.

hawthorn has struggled with injury for at least 5 years now,for a period of about 10-12 games last year we had almost everyone available and we won the flag, however the trend at this club is to have a high injury list, this along with some very poor recruiting ( DOWLER AND THORPE both top 10 picks), has left the club vulnerable as the winless start to the season indicates,we are a long way behind other clubs in our injury prevention and management practices, how the club responds to this crucial area will determine where club ends up this season and beyond, if they can get this right hawthorn will establish a dynasty, keep stuffing it up and the 2008 flag might be the last one for some time

Every club has injuries - that's the nature of the beast, what we're paying for now is a long season last year and a brutal finals series, given how young our side really is its not surprising that we would struggle to get back to full fitness straight away.

We've got to remember that we won a flag at the same point in out development that Geelong made a Semi Final - 2004/5

With the notable exceptions of a few, our recruiting has been outstanding.

Mitchell, Campbell, Osborne, Gilham, Guerra, Young, Murphy, Brown were all late order draftees/rookies/rejects and the like that have all turned into useful contributers for us.

Take 7-8 of any clubs best 22 out and they'll all struggle to compete, we're no different

That sounds really bad. We desperately need to improve at the stoppages next week. We'll probably lose in the ruck, but we need it to be closer. What we really need though, is our clearence players to step up! You don't need to win the majority of the taps if your clearence players are dominating. Mitch might as well have been not playing last week, and with Sewell and Lewis actually not playing... it pains me to dwell on it for too long.

This run of injuries has really exposed our lack of depth in the ruck and key defender areas. This is something that we desperately need to address, unless we want to always be just 3 or 4 injuries away from performances like last weeks!

What the????? How can you post such dribble??? how can you say the trend is to have a high injury list??? EVERY Club has injuries, every club has periods of low and of high injuries. What basis do you have to say we are a long way behind other clubs on injury management & prevention???

Lose 2 games and they come out of the woodwork don't they.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought Bailey was coming back from his injury soon, hopefully by Round 8 we are stronger

Hawthorn has 16 injured players. The AFL lists 12 Hawthorn players but they have thoughtfully left out Muston, Savage, Walsh and Lowden. But given that these lists are forwarded to the AFL by the clubs, it probably just a case of the HFC trying to make the parlous condition of its list look better than what it really is by ommitting these players.

All of the other AFL teams have between 2 and 11 injuries going into round 3, with 10 teams having 5 to 8 injured players, which to my mind is the typical number that a club would expect to have injured at any given time.

The club has just had one week short of 6 months to put a team back out onto the park for the new season and the result is an injury that would embrass any club's medical staff.

If an injury list of this magnitude and at this time of the year is not symptomatic of poor injury management and defective player preparation then what would be an appropriate measure of poor performance? (n.b. this is not a rhetorical question).
