I was seriously impressed with him last night.

Talk about Scarlett Mark II, i think we are on to a real winner here.

That dash up the wing in the last qtr was great to watch, backed himself and just went for it. Should have resulted in a goal (but for Stokes spraying it)

He still has a fair way to go, he has looked really uncertain when under pressure on the last line, but with a bit of confidence up could be a really good find.

His field kicking to position, whilst at full tilt was the highlight for mine. That run down the wing was also great to see. I would be content to have him in for the finals, put Scarlett and Taylor back in and he'll look a lot less shakey. Hopefully, however, we don't need to use him deep into September.

Didn't realise he had a bit of toe, loved his chase at one point, and his run up the wing too.

Some good, early signs :thumbsu:

Someone that has a lot of potential and i would like to see him reach it. Although i don't like his chances of playing finals once we get a full team back. Next year after a few more games i think he will start to get a bit more confidence and we will really start to see him shine. Should become a good defender especially when we will need him in 2-3 years when we lose Dasher and Scarlett.

l don't mind this kid,l thought he play quiet well last night l was sitting in the stands so l had a birds eye view. And l liked what l saw of the number 25 l hope he and scarlo and work together for a another year or 2 so matty can teach gillies a few tricks ,he looks the goods :thumbsu:

Its interesting that Gillies has been given so many games in his first year. Geelong normally gives their newbies a good year in the VFL,only the real quality guys step straight up like Selwood, Ablett, Bartel. Meanwhile McKenna who was sort of talked up a little at the start of the year hasn't had one game and he has been on list enough time to push for one. Is McKenna just a slow developer or is he a guy who may be out the door because a guy like Gillies has jumped ahead of him, similar to Selwood and Prismall.

I still don't see Scarlett in Gillies but thats fine.He seems more like a Hybrid of Egan/Harley. The run he did the other night sort of resembled a David Dench type run. Certainly all good names to be compared to.

I guess its just the way he looks when he runs off half-back.. He'd be stoked to hear all the names being thrown around i'm sure.

What I liked about Gills on Friday was that his disposal was actually better than it has been in the VFL for most the year. A good sign IMO.

Don't think McKenna is big enough to play 'true' key position, to be honest. Has been playing well enough in the VFL and actually showed a bit up forward in the absence of Brown and Simpson. I think he's got a future and will stay on the list.

It’s important to expose our up-n-comers to AFL action as much as we responsibly can. Ideally you’d like them to have around 30 games under their belts by the time the 30 pluses retire. I didn’t (thankfully) see much of Friday nights game but when asked on radio today about who he was pleased with of our replacements Bomber didn’t mention Gillies. Did mention Hogan and (wait for it) Tenace and Lonergan though.

Hopefully talking up their trade value

I've been banging on about Gillies in recent weeks and it would be no surprise if he played finals football ahead of Lonergan / Tenace and a few others.

The Scarlett comparison is from the recruiting guys and others inside the club so it's a fair vote of confidence. Harley and Milburn won't play on next year in my opinion (Harley 100%) so it's nice to know we have Gillies coming through. If only we had Egan right to go.

Heard him on Sat on LO say the same thing. I really think so many times a FB is in the hands of the inbound ball and therefore midfield pressure. After the first quarter Lonergan did a fair job under duress , but the fact is if Fev had kicked straight he should have kicked 7 goals plus.

Tenace and Hogan probably are in there for a similar role and with the years he has been at the club Tenace should standout in comparison. He doesn't. I really cant see how he would ever be in our best 22 , his pace isn't as damaging as it should be because of his disposal , and he adds little in physicality. Hogan looks like he may be more of a goal kicker , sure he needs to work on his kicking but its not as poor as Tenace is now.

If we can find a mate for Gillies , we will go along way towards reinforcing our group of mids for the next two/three years

Gillies has always been a gun, even when I watched him play in the TAC Cup. He regularly toweled up the best of the up and coming forwards. The problem with Gillies is that people who were picking rep teams are looking for more athletic type defenders, the types that have a lot of upside. If the team had been picked on genuine defenders Gillies would have been first pick. Will be a seen as one of the bargains of the draft.
