Toast Gillies!

Gillies has always been a gun, even when I watched him play in the TAC Cup. He regularly toweled up the best of the up and coming forwards. The problem with Gillies is that people who were picking rep teams are looking for more athletic type defenders, the types that have a lot of upside. If the team had been picked on genuine defenders Gillies would have been first pick. Will be a seen as one of the bargains of the draft.
Was Hurley seen as more athletic Rizzo? He has certainly been impressive at Essendon. If remember correctly didn't you have us picking him in your phantom with a late pick , maybe you can find another likely defender that would fit us this year!!

Gillies probably lost his place to Lisle, who played as a forward for his school and in the TAC but went to CHB for Metro in the carnival. Lisle's more atheltic and is bigger and had an excellent carnival; Gillies is the more natural defender though.

Both Hurley and Lisle were seen as more athletic for sure and I think that clouded the selectors minds. Gillies was the only defender IMHO that didn't look unco on the last line. He had poise, he made smart decisions and was damaging in other ways.

Yeah, I did have us taking Gillies (the same pick we did take him with). He was one of my favourite juniors that came through last season, and I was hoping we got him.

Yep 100% spot on

Gillies was great on friday night!

Still looked to be learning on the last line, but give him time, he's young. The run and dare and carry fit in well with our style and I think he's a goer:)

I must admit when Taylor and Scarlo went down I was surprised to see him played ahead of some others since it's his first year, but clearly I am a noob and Bomber and the coaching staff know what they're doing :D

Will be interesting to see if he stays in as Taylor and Scarlo are back this week. If they pick on form, he should stay ahead of Lonergan. Though since Dasher and Wojo are out, this might give us cover to keep them both and avoid making that decision.

I should be cheeky and start a thread about whether when we make the GF will Lonergan be this year's MB? :D

funny you say this. i have watched Lisle in a couple of vfl games and he looked slow and uncoordinated. maybe he was having a couple of off days

I thought the knock on Lisle; and therefore why he slipped to pick 50 odd in the draft; was the lack of leg speed he had. Gillies, on the other hand, has run a sub 3 second 20 metre time. From what I have seen of both players it is Gillies who is the more athletic.

I don't know if it is true but I also heard that Hawthorn were going to pick Gillies with their second round pick but were trumped by us.

No BF quotes in there ...

But Gillies has already bought a house in Grovedale according to that article. Must be confident he's gonna be there for a while.

Gillies is a star, he was the Stingrays B&F winner in a team that played in a grand final, was named full back in the TAC Cup team of the year and has really stood out in his time at the Cats already, a real player of the future.

Not so much Bigfooty quotes, just funny that there was a thread on here celebrating him and his recent efforts and now there's a full article on him...
