Gilmore has never been given a decent crack at cementing a place. At 190cm and 90kg he is incredibly versatile. Racks up the possessions playing in the middle for Souths but has been groomed for a defensive role in the AFL. Long left foot and if played as a midfielder is tall and quick, a contrast to our small and slow inside players. Those who say that he hasn't been able to step up don't realise how little game time he has been given. Played two games last year, one of which was tagging Goodes for the whole game. Was an emergency on many occassions.

I see him as an ideal utility player. Can rotate through the middle or play down back. He is suited to playing at subiaco and if given licence to play as a tall outside midfielder could shine brighter than expected.
My smokie for the most improved this year.

Ahead of schoefield, Macca, warren, johnson, webster. Could well give Thornton, Grover, Dodd, Crowley, Cook, Polak, Peake, Mundy and Headland a run for their money. Or at least make sure they earn their place in the team.

Realistically might get a go on the bench, or through injury have a few weeks in the team to show them what he's worth.

I posted this last april:
Where does he fit in?
Not in the back line or forward line. On the wing is where I'd like to see him. We are always whining about having slow, small, short kicking inside midfielders. At the same time accepting the common held belief that outside midfielders are pansies.

He's tall, fast, a long kick and obviously has some defensive qualities to his game as cc has been playing him as a defender. Maybe that is merely tutelege for his go as a more than one dimensional (attacking) midfielder. He can break lines and presents real opportunities (fast, long and direct) for our forwards. Give him a real go as a reciever and the licence to take risks. Either way rotate him trhough the middle.

I'm agreeing with everything you say.

Players ahead of him that are in my best 22 are;
McPharlin
Longmuir
Farmer
Headland (just - depends on form)
Pavlich
Medhurst (just - depends on form)
Black
JCarr
Peake
Grover
Polak (just - depends on form)
MCarr
Parker
Thornton
Haddrill
Sandilands
Bell
Haselby
Crowley
Cook
Mundy
Schammer

These guys are just out. but injuries usually dictate that they'll get a run.
Walker (sooo unlucky - he's fast but skills aren't great)
Dodd

These guys just need a touch more time (but will be used if needed)
Murphy
Johnson

These guys have been either unlucky, are nearly passed their used by date or are yet to show us the money.
Haines
Dunne
McManus
Schofield
Webster
Brown

I think Gilmore will get a run on the bench when injuries rear their head.
If Headlands' form drops off I would like him to slot into his position.

Gilmore, Haines and Dodd are 3 players I'd like to see play regularly because of their form....not because we have injuries.

needs to give the perception that the Footy dept knows more than him.

Just a depth player until that happens. Great for soufswhen he's unmarked etc.

If he is a backman, I think he is going to find himself a fair bit down the pecking order, and will struggle to get in.

Size wise, i would think he would then be competing with Grover, Parker, Mundy and Haddrill; the short talls if you like. They are going to be in front of him on almost everyones list.

I don't see him competing with Johnson and Warren, who are tall enough for the occassional ruck role if required. Polak is a marking backman, and haven't heard of Gilmore being a great mark. Polak and Thornton are the ones usually talked about at CHB, which Gilmore doesn't seem an option for.

Can't see him being picked to play on the smalls in the backline even if he has pace. From the gossip, he doesn't/won't play tight checking and prefers to zone off. Good luck with that on a small with genuine pace. Competing with Hayden, Walker and Black for a role here.

In the midfiled, as a tall running outsider, the only player I realistically see him competing with is Headland. And he has probably been considered when Headland's form has been ordinary in 2005. In my mind it comes down to being between these two in terms of direct competition in the starting lineup. Off the bench it would look like he may compete with Dodd. But the profiles are fairly different with Dodd's reputation as a tagger and toughnut.

He has some fantastic plusses, and also has some negatives, which it would be good to see if he has addressed during the NAB Cup. They have been made clear last year, and include 1) that he needs to develop his defensive side 2) that he is very one sided. Ball's in his court (hmmmm, what game is it again?). Nothing wrong with giving a player some clear guidelines about what he needs to do to get into the team, especially if you back it up by offering him a contract as they did last year.

He's had the same crack as everyone else, and doesn't stand out at AFL level. Peake was racking up possessions in the WAFL oo and he had to wait longer than Gilmour.

In the game against Sydney where defensive pressure was important Goodes had 16 disposals and 5 uncontested marks, and a goal. While Gilmour also won possessions the gossip was that he had to be dropped because he wouldn't follw the coache's intrsuctions.

There is no doubting his talent but there are question marks over his willingness to play a team game, and his willingness to be accountable. I read the following this morning and I thought of Gilmour when I read it.

"I know I used to get pushed out of the way a lot. I didn't know what it takes to play footy back then," he said. "You've got to be prepared to get hurt, to get dirty. It's about getting bruises every week on your shins and your quads, and even when you've just copped a corky in a ruck contest, getting back to the centre square and doing it again regardless. That's the sort of stuff it takes."
