Ollie's comment was a straight out honest view of his opinion. Or as some one like a Ted Ballpit (who us older types would know from Kingswood country) would say '' We were playing like a bunch of shiellas''. Being blown up, a throw away line that was honest. Seems to pretty well typify journo's ( I use that term very lightly) who have an agenda trying to create a shit storm to sell a pitiful paper .

It isn't much different than when we say 'boys playing against men' really.
Man conversation?

What does 'man' mean in this context and should we assume Walsh means tough, uncompromising and direct (because that is their position since appointing Walsh - he is tough and doesn't mince words)? Why would he not say that? In this situation why does Walsh have to indicate that only men can have these conversations.

Ollie may have used 'girlie' to describe a weaknesses in the way we were playing but Walsh insinuates only men can have 'tough' conversations.

It was pretty harmless in the context but part of the issue is that we need to stop thinking like that so even off the cuff comments don't slip out.
A lot like the recent and now mostly defunct phenomenon of calling everything bad 'gay' by kids.

Yup, its exactly the same thing, where male = good and tough, female = bad and weak.

I get the point of what you are saying. Perhaps using the phrase ''soft as butter'' would have been better.

In this instance, woman playing AFL or Aussie rules lining up against men is not that far off the mark. All in context, anyone with half a noodle would know exactly what he meant, nothing derogative really, physically woman are not built the same (unless you are from the Chinese or old eastern block Olympic athlete from the 80s and 90s). Had he said something like '' mentally we are nothing but a bunch of woman'' that would have been probably a sexist remark, to me anyway.

But then the farmers would have complained that the cows don't like having their butter called soft, especially when it's been in the fridge for a while. meanwhile there's an outcry from the margarine manufacturers who took offence for not being included in the discussion.

Storm tea cup much?

Sure we've got some definite issues in society regarding treatment to women, but if Ollie's comments are contributing to that problem then we're more ****ed up than I thought.

if women are seriously complaining about his comments then they need to grow a set of balls and harden the f*** up a little bit.

Thing is that 99% of comments I have seen from women in social media etc. have been in support of Ollie and saying that the whole thing is just a beat up by the media journos (mostly males). I have not seen one yet that said they were offended themselves, but just that they were not surprised to see the media make an issue of it.

Not only was I not offended, but I find it ******* amazing that it is even being talked about.

We have honestly run out of problems in western society if are spending any time worrying about what Ollie said. Seriously. The amount of complete tripe the media and social media fixate on is ridiculous. Men worrying about this need quit being offended on behalf of women and women that are getting upset over this (of whom I believe there are very few), need to put things in perspective. People get around like offence-seeking missiles these days.

It's not about being offended, it's about changing a mindset. It's also not Ollies role to do so.

political correctness comes from the powers that be, the people don't care
Of course they care, why would a woman want her whole gender to be pilloried as soft/ineffective/not as good?
What possible implications could that have on her future career ambitions etc?

Ollie making the comment is not the issue, that it is the prevailing attitude IS the issue.

It's not about people being 'offended' its about changing a mindset so that there is no unnecessary degradation. Much the same with racism and homophobia.

Those who choose not to think of the repercussions cry about political correctness....as if trying to be correct is a bad thing.

It's a similar if more harmful example of the 'all Port fans are feral' stereotype.

It's not only damaging, but lazy!
